Went here because we were in the area and hadn’t been to California Rollin since before they remodeled. The biggest thing I noticed was they severely reduced their menu. We sat outside, which was great except they had the music bumpin like it was a nightclub outside so my wife and I couldn’t hear each other talk. Waitress came over and asked if we wanted something to drink, I asked if there was a drink menu and she said “no, it’s just a ‘bar’.” Which is fine, but I would strongly suggest the team here gets a drink menu, totally a missed opportunity. We asked if they could make a rum punch, and they were good! We each ordered 3 rolls, including a few specialty rolls. Food took about 45 minutes to come to the table, which is typical here – I remember back in the day waiting forever for our sushi. The sushi wasn’t anything special, the rice was dry, the Philly roll had no cream cheese in it, and every roll was packed full of rice with nothing in them – just covered in sauce. Once we were done our server brought the bill but then never came back for 15 min, but did apologize once she came over. There are far better sushi restaurants in Rochester to try, that are equally priced. Overall, a weird experience, could be a good place to get a drink, listen to live music and hangout. But I’d rather go to other restaurants in the area that have better quality food for cheaper price. Disappointed in this place, I feel like they want to be something else, have changed owners a few times, and have lost their touch with sushi and/or were having a bad day. Not worth the $100 we spent for lunch on a Sunday. Based on the owners crazy response below to not only my review, but other reviews on here, it makes sense why this place is falling apart.

If you like warm beer in a can while on hot asphalt and being over charged for it, this is your place. The bonus is you get to pay too much for the worst sushi I’ve had in memory. Your better off buying sushi from Wegmans and drinking on your deck or back yard where you know the beer will be cold and not in a can. On the plus side you will be supporting an owner that is obnoxious with his female staff. Want to take a selfie of you and your friends? Sorry, can’t do that! There is an obscure sign saying cellphone cameras are prohibited! I was talking to a young lady who was thrown out of the bar area for using her phone. Idk if she was taking a picture of the terrible behavior or bad food, she said she was texting, but she was thrown out for “taking pictures” as she was sitting next to me. That blew my mind and I left with her and bought us both drinks and diner at Bill Grey’s. You can only guess the owner didn’t want pics of the sushi that was falling apart or the many other unpleasant things being posted here. I won’t go into the health code violations in case your eating now. Need to use the restroom? Sorry this is the only place I’ve ever seen without a restroom!!!! You have to follow some convoluted path to a public restroom run by another business. That just felt weird to me. Why would you own a restaurant or wxpect people to go to one with no rest room!?! Do yourself a favor and go to any other place in the area and if your looking for sushi, anywhere else will be better sushi. I bet they have a restroom! That’s not to hate on the staff, they seem to be doing their best for a bad owner. I still can’t get over the fact that they serve their beer in a can! Not in a cup, glass or bottle, but a can! To me that just says the owner doesn’t care about you, just give him your money. I dine out far more than I should and I honestly have never seen a respectable restaurant do that….ever, and no rest room, really!!. Just a terrible dining experience that you get to pay money to endure. Opps, and now Google asks if I want to post a pic. Sorry Google that gets you thrown out of this place. Smh!!

I was a regular of California Rollin the original in Village Gate. I keep trying this location and I’m always disappointed. After waiting 20 minutes I went and asked the hostess if we could get a server. Finally a server came over and apologized for the wait and said they’re totally disorganized there. ‍♀️

It seems like the focus of this restaurant is to be a bar and not a sushi restaurant. Over an hour in total before our food arrived from the time we got there, and I had 2 small kids with me. So it was disappointing.

The food was also shocking.. the Volcano roll was bland, the kids avocado rolls were messy, the sweet-and-sour chicken was okay… We were served water in plastic to go cups and given plastic soy saw dishes.. and small drink boxes for the kids. I don’t know if they just don’t care about being environmentally conscious or are too lazy to wash cups, but getting water in a to go cup INDOORS was very strange and very wasteful.

There also was a hair in my food. I’m not sure anything else could have possibly gone wrong. Waiter Blake was nice and comped the roll with hair in it. But the food and wait was too much.

Once again seriously disappointed and will never return.

If I could give 6 stars I would! This place is one I will return to! The location is simply priceless. I got to eat and take a walk on the pier. The crawdads appetizer was cooked so well and the sauce was delicious. The Salmon bowl was run of the mill but delicious. I had a mango mojiito and it had real mango in it. The sever was nice and attentive and the decor was fresh and modern. This is a Rochester gem.

Best sushi I ever had. My daughter got the Philadelphia Roll with salmon and I got a spicy tempura shrimp roll with coconut. Just fabulous. My husband got the Fish Fry which was a huge and thick piece of fish breaded with an awesome crunchy crust. The fries were also great. Highly recommend! Beautiful location by Charlotte pier on Lake Ontario.

This review is solely my opinion based on observations after jogging along the beach and stopping in for a drink. The owner only appears to be there to drink and hit on his female staff. The female staff couldn’t properly do their job because they’re energy appeared to be focused on defending themselves. I saw a customer try to record this on another occasion, I like the beach area and returned after a jog, this customer was thrown out because he was “using his cell phone camera and that is prohibited” there. The owner pointed to an unreadable sign he claimed warned customers that they can’t use their cellphone cameras. The only other time I’ve heard of this is when the police know they’re doing something wrong. As a father, I’ve decided to go to one of the many other near beach establishments where I don’t have to see the female staff endure this. Side note, I asked why one of the female staff endured this behavior and the response was basically that they needed the job. I’ve decided to vote with my money and not support an establishment that appears to subject their female employees to this work environment. I encourage you to return if you like beer from a can on hot asphalt while seeing what I’ve described. I however am not that type of person. I will go to Bill Grey’s instead. There are no photos because, as I said, that will get you thrown out. Clever rule, huh.

My friends got the sushi, and even though I’m not a fan of fish there were a few that I enjoyed. I got an Asian chicken dish that was spectacular. We ate outside with live music and enjoyed the warm weather.

Terrible. No restroom, warm beer in a can, overpriced, sushi looks like it walked to you, and no cellphones allowed for selfie. Not accessible for a wheelchair in my opinion. Definitely do not bring the kids! Go to the Pelicans Nest instead.

The Harbor location is by far one of the better contemporary sushi places in Rochester. Have yet to be disappointed. Has the added benefit of a beautiful location next to the new inner harbor.

Starting on a positive note, the server handling the outdoor bar was great. We ordered takeout, and she gave us water and chatted with us while we waited. It’s a cool space to grab a drink near the lake. I can’t say the same for the food unfortunately. The rolls were extremely bland and falling apart. Our friend found two hairs in hers. There are several better sushi places in town to check out. This is a pass.
