We ordered a few appetizers from the happy hour menu. The Mexican street corn and buffalo cauliflower wings were both delicious and full of flavor. However, the chicken dumplings didn’t quite meet our expectations—they were just okay.
For dessert, we ordered the brownie with ice cream, but unfortunately, it was disappointing. The brownie wasn’t warm, and it had a bitter taste that didn’t pair well with the ice cream.
We opted to get a pizza to go for $11 (fantastic idea) but the pizza we took home is awful! It’s tiny and the toppings are almost non-existent. There’s no way they would serve this at their restaurant. I feel like we got tricked. We were told it was the same pizza on the menu but it isn’t.
It was also cold and super loud in the restaurant.
This location is typical for the franchise. The ambience was very good and everything was clean. Our server took our drink orders and then shortly after she returned with all of the non-alcoholic drinks we were able to order our dinner.
Food was surprisingly quick. Everything looked delicious and when we realized one of the dishes was not quite right, our server replaced it very quickly and we even had the manager approach our table and check in on our food and how we all were doing. Food was good and very filling. We ended our night with their secret off menu dessert: a Trash Burger. They take their Butter Cake, slice through it and add the Belgian Chocolate Souffle Cake in the middle. They top that off with Vanilla Ice Cream and Chocolate Drizzle–lots of chocolate drizzle. There’s also whipped cream and chocolate syrup drizzled on the plate. It’s good for at least 4 people and it’s always such a treat to get.
I’m love cheesecake and the seasonal pumpkin cheesecake is excellent. Our server was awesome as usual and overall a great time.
One of the waitress behind the counter helping fixed food, answered the phone with her gloves on and continued plating food. That was gross. And the bathroom needs some cleaning done.
We live in Japan and are very loyal fans of CPK. Like, “we will defend CPK Japan in group chats” level fans. It’s consistently great, reliable, and comforting. So when we spotted a CPK in Hawaii, we thought, Ah yes, a taste of home… but tropical. What could possibly go wrong?
Answer: quite a few small things that slowly added up into one very confusing dining experience.
We arrived with high expectations and happy stomachs, ordered our food, and immediately encountered our first shock: no smoothies. None. Zero. In Japan, smoothies are basically part of the CPK identity, so this felt like ordering fries and being told potatoes aren’t really their thing here. We recovered emotionally, but it took time.
Then came the waiting. A lot of waiting. Starters took so long that we started wondering if “California Pizza Kitchen” meant the ingredients were being shipped directly from California… by canoe. We’re patient people, but at some point we began bonding with the table next to us over shared uncertainty.
Speaking of the table next to us: their kids were enthusiastically playing video games at full blast volume. Not just loud—commitment-level loud. Our dinner soundtrack was a nonstop loop of electronic beeps, explosions, and victory music. We didn’t order the “Arcade Dining Experience,” but here we were.
Eventually, the food arrived. Or rather… it appeared. Sadly, it seemed like it had been prepared quite some time ago and then politely ignored until it was our turn. Everything was noticeably cold and bland, as if the flavors themselves had clocked out early. It tasted less like “fresh from the kitchen” and more like “waiting patiently backstage for its cue.”
Was it the worst meal ever? No.
Was it deeply disappointing compared to CPK Japan? Absolutely.
Three stars because we still love CPK as a concept, and because we’re choosing to believe this location was just having an off day. We’ll keep the fond memories of CPK Japan close to our hearts… and maybe manage expectations a bit better next time we see one abroad.
