Social Profile:

Calexico started as a street cart in 2006, and has been serving award-winning Cal-Mex cuisine to New Yorkers ever since. Founded by 3 brothers from the border town of Calexico, California (California + Mexico = Calexico), Calexico’s Upper East Side outpost serves elevated West Coast-style Mexican food and cocktails in a beautiful space on the corner of 78th Street and Second Ave. The vibe is fun and relaxed, with an eclectic soundtrack that leans toward 60’s garage rock and vintage punk rock. On weekends, Calexico serves what many consider to be the best Mexican brunch in New York City. Calexico has won a good deal of recognition over the years, including being voted the Top Mexican Restaurant in NYC by the readers of Zagat.

Simple Mexican tacos, burritos & quesadillas plus booze served amid contemporary decor.

A little pricy for a to-go lunch—or so I thought until I bit into the first jalapeño popper. OMG! My mouth is on fire in a good way! But then the fried chicken tacos stepped up to the plate—or, rather, flew off the plate and straight into my gullet. Very pleasant, colorful atmosphere. I’ll be back soon!

Some of the nicest food I’ve had in a while. The esquites starter was unbelievable (I would’ve licked the plate if it was socially acceptable) and the surf and turf fajitas were out of this world. The guacamole was so fresh too. I’ve been before and so glad I brought a friend visiting me this time. I had the special hibiscus strawberry frozen margarita which was amazing. The staff were so friendly and their service was fantastic. 11/10 and will definitely be back

Great place! I really enjoyed having dinner with my friends there. The interiors were cute, cozy and very comforting. It wasn’t loud, so we could speak with each other. The food was good too, with the exception of sometimes very gooey pieces of beef. Staff was listening and helping us with everything all the way. I’d definitely come back again.

Great spot for Mexican/Tex-Mex, quite reasonable prices, and really good with the expected margaritas and similar mixed drinks. In addition to all the standard fare – tacos, burritos, nachos – I especially like the esquites (street corn, off the cob) and the Brussels sprouts.

The only knock I have is cleanliness. Our last trip we were seated at the window in a half full restaurant (the table was fully set), but the table was sticky, the chairs had crumbs, and old, crusty guacamole adorned the edge in one side.

Aside from that though, the servers are awesome, the drinks strong, and the atmosphere convivial.

I got the barbacoa quesadilla which was really delicious, the dipping sauce was nice. The pollo asada was nice too.
It’s very loud inside the restaurant so I’d suggest their very nice outdoors seating.
Neither of us like the mango and passion fruit margs but it’s cool

Do not sit outside at the table in the corner closest to the street near the traffic lights. You will need rock climbing kit to connect yourself to the wall so you don’t fall off the edge. We got given said sideways table and check out the drink in the photo. That’s sitting on the table!!!
We tried to get the waitress to move us but the disinterest was incredible.
The service was meh but the food is actually really good. Eating said good food wasn’t hard, it just slid off the end of the table and straight into our mouths…..jokes aside, this is the worst table in NYC and ruined the whole meal.

A delightful spot. Loved the ambiance. Exemplary service. Appreciated all the available hot sauces. Was also grateful for the heat within the dish itself.

Very popular and rowdy restaurant on a Friday night, we were lucky to have gotten seats.

Food took a while to come out probably because they were busy – we liked the quesadilla (with beef) and the special fajita burrito (with chicken) was also ok.

The Cali burrito was not that good though (maybe not enough fries).

Steak fajitas were also average, the steak was pretty flavorless
