We had booked our Christmas do for 1pm, but the moment we arrived the waiter told us, rather abruptly, that the kitchen would close at 2pm and we needed to order immediately. This created unnecessary pressure from the start.
We enjoyed a lovely lunch, but when we tried to order dessert around 2pm, we were told the kitchen was closed and that we needed to pay our bill and leave. For a Christmas meal to last less than an hour must surely be some kind of record — and not in a good way. We were genuinely gutted.
What made it worse was that Calcutta already knew this was a Christmas booking, yet never mentioned the early closing time. It’s hard to understand how a restaurant offering Christmas lunches is only open for two hours, or why guests aren’t informed beforehand.
To sum up: five-star food, zero-star service. The food was exceptional, but the hosting felt rude, abrupt, and frankly quite awkward. Such a shame for a restaurant with such great potential.
An amazing place to eat absolutely stunning and all the staff were polite and attentive
The food was out of this world one of the best curries we have had
Tried the stuffed Dosa and was excellent as was the whole courses we ordered
There was perfect timing between courses and we both thoroughly enjoyed the evening and the food ⭐️
Will definitely be coming back
The building is a converted church/monastery (I’m not sure) but the architecture and artwork on the walls is stunning; it’s a great setting for a restaurant. We went with some friends who had not been before and they too were impressed with the place.
We ordered the tandoori sizzling platters, chicken tikka, and a medium spiced lamb dish, all with rice and naan.
The meat on the sizzling platters was quite a strong flavour (meaty, if you wish), and it all looked and tasted quite similar even though it was a mixed platter. Friend enjoyed his chicken tikka, and I enjoyed my lamb dish too.
The thing that ruined it for all of us – and has done for me before – is the service. It always seems just a bit abrupt, aloof. They are also always trying to take away items from the table whilst you are still eating. My friend was dipping his naan into his curry bowl and they were still trying to take that!
It’s not nice having people lean over you trying to clear the table whilst you are eating. The table wasn’t rammed with dishes so we weren’t struggling for space. It just feels like they want you in and out of there (I’m sure that is not the case but that is how it comes across).
I probably wouldn’t rush back, but food isn’t that bad and the building is amazing; could just do with some customer service training.
Might be back…
The food was good and we ordered too much so took it home and had it the next day.
Service was okay but not outstanding, the waiter was polite and we had a good conversation.
