Calandra’s Bakery was founded in 1962 by Luciano Calandra, an Italian immigrant who had been in America for just five years. Today, the family has three bakeries and their products are delivered to more than 500 supermarkets, delis, and restaurants. In addition to their bakeries, the Calandra family now owns and operates several hotels, restaurants, and apartment buildings.

A lovely Italian pastry shop in Newark, NJ, offering cakes, danishes, coffee, and many other fresh treats. The whole place feels neat and orderly, with a strong crew running things smoothly. Even though around ten folks were in line when I arrived, it moved quickly, and I waited no more than five minutes. The service felt warm, quick, and well-organized.
I found parking right across the street, since the shop has a small lot with room for around ten cars. For anyone seeking a clean, friendly spot with classic Italian sweets and pastries, this is an easy choice. I usually visit a similar shop in Fairfield, yet since this one is closer to home, we thought we should finally stop in — and it fully lived up to expectations.

This place does not disappoint! Incredible selection of delicious pastries. I had a Sfogliatella and it was the most delicious pastry I’ve ever had. The cannolis are also incredible. Parking can be challenging but 10/10 recommend!

We got a tres leches cake here for my friends birthday and we were impressed by the very clean facility, prompt service and large selection of baked goods. They have custom cakes, cheesecakes, flan, cookies, breads and tarts.

Absolutely love this bakery! The moment you walk in, you’re greeted with the irresistible smell of fresh-baked goods. Every item I’ve tried has been nothing short of amazing. The staff is always friendly and welcoming, making the experience even better. The quality and attention to detail in every treat is exceptional, and it’s clear they use only the best ingredients. I can’t recommend this place enough – a true gem for any pastry lover!

I really like this place—the service is always excellent, and they offer a great variety of bread, cookies, and cakes. The cakes I’ve tried are fresh and taste good, though some are a bit too sweet and not always true to their traditional flavors. My main concern is the pricing, which feels quite high.

Let me begin by saying: I bought bread from the shoprite near me and this was the logo on the bag, and the name of the bread when i bought it.
Now, this loaf of bread is terrible. Sometimes for lunch i’ll get a loaf of sourdough, or just whatever looks good. This looked good, but it smells and tastes like chlorine, its super stale (which could be cause i got it from outside the bakery, i’ll give them that). Its just an allround disappointing loaf of bread. I will never get them again and honestly, i’m a little concerned im gonna get food poisoning, ngl.

The photo cake was a joke they crowded the writing on top of my son’s picture. I would have let the appearance slide if the cake was good. But it was horrible dry stale cake tasteless whipped cream icing and skimpy vanilla custard strawberry filling was very disappointing. This place has really declined from the early years.

We stopped here to gather so treats while we were in New Jersey. The cheesecakes, as always, were delicious and creamy. The tri color pastry was dry. Jelly very tart and good, but the cake part was not. (The tri color cookies were too :(.) The fruit tart was good. The tart cup was crumbly and cinnamony, but the middle part was soggy and falling apart. The chocolate mousse cake was absolutely amazing!! Cake was moist and cream was light.
The cookies: linzer tart was soft and jelly was great and tart, pine nut cookie was soft and chewy- I didn’t like it. The jelly cookie was good, tasted like like an Italian cookie should. Overall it was delicious and we’ll be back!
