Overall a terrible experience. If a restaurant can’t even make a simple burger I don’t know how they can stay in business.
So the extended family and I stopped in Taos for an afternoon walk about on our New Mexico vacation… my sister wanted to try a Italian restaurant to do something non-traditional while in New Mexico and we were all happily surprised at the Quality, service, and atmosphere of this charming little restaurant. Everyone ordered something different and we all sampled each other’s meals and it was all amazing. Ironically I think my son’s cheeseburger was probably the best burger I’ve had in a really long time, but personally that Caprese salad was on point with (grilled chicken) ..yum yum! check this place out if you’re in Taos, you definitely shouldn’t just pass it by
We headed curiously into Cafe Renato, and no one was there immediately to welcome guests, but it was also super slow for businesses around this time. We poked our heads into a room on the right , where we were met by the owner, Renato. He ushered us into the other room and let us choose our own table. We sat near the window and he left momentarily to promptly bring us back two glasses of water, and then asked what we would like to drink. I had a simple water, but my boyfriend ordered “hot tea” from the menu, thinking it was just going to be plain black tea or something. “I’ll be right back with a selection,” Renato said cheerily, and he was…he brought back a small tray with a wide assortment of wonderful teas, leaving them at the table along with a mug and a little pot of hot water while we were left to decide on our food.
When he came back, he listed off some specials before we ordered, and my boyfriend chose this chicken and pasta dish special…I don’t remember what was in it, but I’m not a pasta or sauce kind of person and tried it…It was absolutely DELICIOUS! The pasta was al dente, the seasonings were perfect, and the chicken was a wonderful touch to the dish. My boyfriend was also happy because the bread that came with it was hot and soft, as well.
I had a bit of trouble deciding on what to get, so Renato helped me choose and suggested maybe a nice sandwich. I decided to try the grilled chicken sandwich, which had sliced grilled chicken, mild green chile (packed with flavor, although not spicy), melted mozzarella cheese, lettuce, tomatoes and onions served on a toasted, corn-dusted bun. On the menu, it listed chipotle sauce as an option, which I requested to be left off since I’m allergic to chipotle. Renato had absolutely no problem with that, and our food was served to us around 10 minutes later, which was perfect because it allowed us to wander around the place and look at the wonderful art hung on the walls of the historic building. The onion rings included in my order were the best I’ve ever had, and in place of ketchup, he brought me a small thing of ranch to dip them in. The food was hot, fresh, and absolutely wonderful!
During the course of our meal, the owner came back a couple times to check on our beverages and when we were done, we talked to him for awhile before leaving. He’s a pretty funny and extremely friendly guy…and it made our gloomy, long Wednesday feel a lot better after spending some time at Cafe Renato.
He told us he may be doing something special in the restaurant on Valentine’s day when we asked, so maybe we’ll be back again and I can write another great review. 🙂 Thanks, Renato, for the awesome experience!
The pasta is cooked to excellence, sauces rich and creamy, salads fresh and excellent wine list to boot.
I give this place a ten out of ten!
To begin, our server was un-attentive, although there was only one other table filled, and our drinks went un-filled while we watched him standing outside gazing at traffic. This would have gotten the usual “I spent years in the business so I will still leave 20 percent” philosophy from me, but then my wife took two or three bites of her entrée (caprese salad with salmon) and something tasted off, so she didn’t eat. When the “server” finally came to check on us (table still sans drinks and now full of plates needing to be cleared) she informed him and he acted less than concerned about her dining experience. Now here is the kicker, when he came back with the bill he actually said that normally they would take the item off of the bill but they ALL TASTED IT and nothing seemed wrong with it!!!! When we asked to speak with a manager he said that he was the manager (though I can’t imagine that was the truth, being that he was server # 4 on our receipt) Do yourself a favor and never eat at this restaurant!
There is a front and back outside eating area and this place is dog friendly.
