Originally established in 1936, Cafe Texan offers a unique blend of cafe and museum. Enjoy a delicious scratch-made meal while surrounded by a curated collection of art and artifacts, all housed in a historic building in Huntsville, Texas. In 2023, the Cafe Texan relaunched as a non-profit and take pride in three core values: preservation of history, giving back to the community, and serving good food to good people.

Such a lovely place! Excellent breakfast with a sweet atmosphere. Biscuits were amazing! I had an omelet with ham, cheese & spinach along with hash browns, and he got two eggs, bacon, hash browns and grits. All was great! I believe the waitress was Lexi and she was awesome!

Eggs come out the way you ask, toast stacked simply, and the hash browns break open soft beneath a deep brown crust. Nothing on the plate is decorative, and nothing feels rushed.

Cafe Texan is a reincarnation of the original Cafe Texan, which was an old-time “greasy spoon” coffee shop. The new one is upscale and modern, which some may not regard as an improvement. The decor is light and airy, the food is great, and the service friendly and efficient. I had a unique “charcuterie” breakfast which included an egg and bacon but was lighter than the usual with fruit, a little cheese, and a 1/4 waffle.

Great traditional spot with excellent food. I ordered the chicken fried steak, and it was absolutely tremendous—perfectly cooked and full of flavor. The green beans with bacon and the mashed potatoes were also really good and rounded out the meal perfectly. The local team I was dining with loved it too; several people ordered the same dish and were equally impressed. A couple others tried the hamburger on a pretzel bun, which also went over very well. Overall, a fantastic meal and a place I’d gladly return to.

We came here because it’s the oldest café in Texas. I love cafes, unique diners, etc and this is definitely one of those! It’s small, right in the heart of downtown so you can walk to the sights nearby. The service was spectacular on a Wednesday morning. The food was SO good! Generous portions especially for the prices, and these days everything is so high. It tasted fresh and homemade. I will definitely be going back when we go through town, might even make the drive just for the food!

We were in town for a girls weekend and had a great experience here. A few of us had visited under the previous owners, but this was our first time since the remodel and it did not disappoint. The service was friendly and attentive, the food was delicious and came out fast, and the kitchen manager even stopped by to check on us personally.
The adjoining museum with the owner’s personal collection was an unexpected highlight…we were blown away. Learning that both the restaurant and museum are nonprofit and support charities made the experience even better. We can’t recommend this place enough and will definitely be back.

We found this place by accident. Glad we did! Lots of history and they are known for the chicken fried steak. The best CFS I’ve ever had and I’ve had a lot!

So glad we stopped in for lunch while exploring Huntsville. The cafe claims to be the longest in years of operation. Not sure if that is true but it certainly was far and above on the quality of food and service that one typically gets at a cafe. It is housed in an old brick building on Sam Houston Avenue across from the Walker County Courthouse. I was there with a group of friends and we had been exploring Huntsville all morning and worked up quite an appetite.
As we entered we were greeted by a server who quickly seated us. The decor inside is quite modern, very clean and bright in appearance. They have a semi open kitchen at one end and their museum is in an adjoining room. Drinks were ordered and then we all ordered our lunch entrees. We were pleasantly surprised when they came out, the servings were very generous without being overpowering and nicely plated. Two in our party ordered hamburgers with French fries which looked and tasted lovely from what they said. Two of us had the Crab Cakes which were very good, 3 in heart shapes on each plate with a nice remoulade and corn/black bean salsa. One member of our group had a salad.
After lunch we walked through the museum which has lovely lighting and display cases. It’s an odd mix of artifacts but after touring the HEARTS Veterans Museum as well as the Prison Museum we enjoyed the difference in items displayed. And even the restrooms were spotless!
I saw where a previous review claimed it was too expensive but we would disagree. You get what you pay for and we got great food and lovely service. If you want cheap, go to an average chain restaurant. People forget that since Covid, the price of ingredients is way up as well as employee salaries, rent and insurance.
