It’s a nice little cafe. I usually get latte or cappuccino and I love their coffee. It’s a popular one in town so it’s pretty much always crowded. Nice decor inside but usually a bit too noisy too read or work just bc it’s so popular if that’s what you come for. But I still enjoy sitting for a shorter time.

If you’re in Rochester, MN and looking for great coffee, this is your spot. Coffee was absolutely dialed in — smooth, bold, and consistent. The sugar-free syrup options were A+ (hard to find good ones, and they nailed it).
The atmosphere is amazing — perfect for client meetings, remote work, or just taking a break from the day. Staff was outstanding: friendly, efficient, and genuinely welcoming.
Pro tip: Park in the back or take a short walk through downtown Rochester. Totally worth it.

True coffee shop experience! Loved that there is plenty of seating. Parking is a bit of a bear, but once you’re inside its the delightful eccentric coffee shop that you’re expecting.

Cafe steam checks all the boxes that you would expect of a specialty coffee shop. Although during peak hours seating is limited, the kindness and intentionality of the baristas and the delicious coffee and scones make up for it. I especially appreciate the diverse menu and late hours. Definitely recommend for a quick cup of joe, or for a cozy place to read or study!

I love espresso but don’t enjoy the sour or bitter ones. The baristas informed me that they use a light roast to ensure it would be enjoyable, not bitter. The espresso was pleasant from start to finish. No sour or bitter notes whatsoever. Absolutely delicious!
The cold brew was also smooth and would highly recommend!
The apricot scone was also moist, delicious, and not overly sweet! The barista mentioned they come from a local bakery and they revamp the recipe regularly, ensuring high quality with taste and texture.
I highly recommend this coffee shop! I am glad I had some time to explore around the Mayo Clinic and find gems like this shop!

I love the Steam at Discovery place, same name, I figured same coffee quality. Nope. Not at all. I was very let down at my experience at the Steam on Broadway. I ordered a latte, and scone. The person with me placed her order too. We were staying at the cafe to drink our beverages.
You never want to serve the 10 ounce drink in a 12 ounce paper cup of you have the option right. Well, I got mine in a paper cup . So instead of a latte, I ended up with a Cappuccino. That wasn’t at all what I wanted. I literally had a foam mustache as it was filled with foam & milk vs the traditional milk of a latte.
I’m not sure where the breakdown occurred – if they simply used a paper cup for their convenience? If they didn’t know the difference between a Cappuccino & Latte. I was sorely disappointed in the beverage. I drank 1/4 and ditched it, won’t be back. Can’t recommend this location anyway. How can two cafes blocks apart be so totally different?
I love the ceramic cups at Steam. Not some crummy paper cup I would get from a gas station. I almost had them re-make it, but decided it’s better just not to return to this location.
So disappointed ☹️

Cafe Steam has a wonderful selection of coffee, tea, and treats but what sets them apart is the people. The owner William listens to and takes care of his employees which results in employees that listen to and take care of their customers. The culture Cafe Steam provides to the downtown area is a fantastic choice for those looking to study, work, or connect with those around them. I cannot recommend this little hot spot enough and would advise you to try their pop tarts. This place is a pioneer in the old saying “Friends don’t let friend say there is nothing to do in Rochester”. Thank you for what you provide for our wonderful city!
