We came here for Sunday Roast and it was exquisite. The restaurant catered for my wife’s allergies with with no fuss as they have done so for over 10 years, expertly cooking a stunning thick cut steak with a jus that was like liquid gold.
Please give this place your full attention and they will take care of you as they have for me over the years
Thank you to Neil and the team for a memorable experience as we depart Edinburgh for a new adventure.
However, the food did not meet our expectations. The starters were acceptable, but the main courses were rather disappointing. While the restaurant exudes a sense of luxury, with a set dinner menu offering only a few select options, we found the dishes themselves lacking in quality.
I ordered the pork as my main course, but it was overly oily and fatty, making it difficult to finish. Although I could see that the chef had put thought into the presentation and details, the overall taste was underwhelming. My partner opted for a medium-cooked steak with chips. Unfortunately, she found the steak to be undercooked on the inside, while the exterior was burnt and had an unpleasant, aged taste. The chips were overly soft, lacking any crispness, and seemed to be saturated with oil. Additionally, the snacks were excessively sweet, which further detracted from our dining experience.
The total bill came to £133 for two people, which is in line with what one would expect from a high-end restaurant. However, given the disappointing quality of the food, we felt that the experience did not justify the price. This left us feeling somewhat dissatisfied, and it ultimately put a slight damper on what was meant to be a special Valentine’s Day celebration.
I would recommend this café to anyone visiting Edinburgh.
I had the terrine to start and then roast turkey. Main course was absolutely fantastic, pretty much a perfect roast. Turkey was so tender, and they gave me a jug of extra gravy to drown myself in. Terrine was good, but lost a couple of points for me. First, I found buckshot in it (at least you know it’s real wild game!) which was honestly fine, but slightly better QC would be advised. Aside from that, overall the dish felt a little heavy. There wasn’t quite enough of the fig running through it to counterpoint the meat, and the pickled red cabbage wasn’t quite doing it for me.
Wife had the pumpkin soup, which was lovely and creamy. For mains, she had slow cooked beef shin on mash with kale. It was also very tasty, can’t say too much as I was only allowed one bite 😉
Waiting staff were fantastically on point as well, and they always offer to call a taxi at the end of the meal which is a nice touch.
Ps. Literally I didn’t expect much because I was followed my idol from Korean group that his name is Joshua from Seventeen to take a photo as him but everything is soooo good! I will be back!!!
We had the steak special for main and asked for medium rare but it came out a bit over. Also the duck main special was also over cooked. The meat was on the chewy side, but the flavours of the dishes were delicious. We had a show after lunch so didn’t have time to send them back to the kitchen. The berry pudding dessert we ordered was also unfortunately not to our taste. It was made with bread and the cold bread tasted thick and wet and we didn’t enjoy it.
Despite this, the scallop nduja starter was perfect and service was really lovely. The restaurants itself is super quaint. Made me feel like I was in Paris again. Would return to give them another chance.
