I was halfway through my salad and thought, you know, I need to write this Cafe Rio a review. I was surprised to see the lower reviews and they motivated me to do it.

I grew up in Southern CA where the Cafe Rio had mexican ladies making fresh tortillas at the start of the line. The pinnacle of Cafe Rios if you will. I’ve been to this Cafe Rio in Kuna, Idaho multiple times and I’ve got to say this one does the job.

I have consistently had very kind service from the young staff here at this location. We connect over our Cafe Rio creations and they always give a generous amount of food. Their youth probably also explains why this place could be cleaned up better but I’ve never noticed anything too bad.

I always go in person and have not ordered drive-thru as that was not an option growing up (I also like the experience of going down the line), so I can’t speak to that. But if you are in the mood for somewhat-mexican food that you can always count on hitting the spot, come dine here. Especially if you have kids as they get plenty to eat for like $5.

This is a really hard review to write because we absolutely love Cafe Rio. We go every single Saturday night (for at least the last two years) but typically to the Ten Mile location. Tonight we decided to try the Kuna location because we were in the area.

It was such a disappointment. We got 4 entrees and all were made poorly. I’ve included a photo of one of the bowls and one of the salads we got before we tried them. The amount of food in the bowl barely covered the bottom and the “side” of guacamole and sour cream were about a teaspoon each because the containers were bare. However we still got charged the full amount.

My main issue was the salads. They put what could be considered a side of lettuce in each container. I did request more from the gentleman stating they were just salads no rice or beans. The amount in the photo was what I ended up with after asking for more.

To cap off that lovely experience they were out of ice and forks in the lobby. I know neither are a big deal but we after spending almost $60 for dinner we were incredibly disappointed.

We will never try this location again, and will stick with our regular.

Jay was incredible !! Such a sweetheart!! Ben and Preston are super through and patient on the food line with a great sense of humor Kate made some of the most beautiful tortillas I have seen and I’m from Tucson Az!! this crew is probably the best crew I’ve ever run across at any fast food place/ dine in eatery.. their energy is amazing!!! The staff sang and cheered when asked.. but also they had impeccable service. Please recognize each one of your members and give them a raise.please give them an extra day off extra food, anything and everything more hours more benefits, more money each of them!!!

Well. It was an experience I won’t forget.

Allow me to set the stage. I, a Cafe Rio stan, came to this establishment (my first visit to this location) at approximately 5:30 PM on a Saturday. The building was empty. That was my first sign. The first thing I walked past was the soda machine, which had an off-putting odor—like morning breath on your child after they told you they brushed their teeth but now you’re certain they lied—and the agua frescas looked decidedly NOT FRESCA. The horchata had brown chunks that had settled to the bottom, and none of them looked to be refrigerated or even circulating. May god have mercy on whoever drank that, and may he have mercy on me for ignoring his signs.

The floor was littered with sand and gravel. Why? I couldn’t tell you, but it was enough to remind me of the streets when the snow has finally melted. I can only assume a troop of road sanders were using the dining room as practice just before I entered.

Boldly, stupidly, I pressed on. At the counter, the staff who greeted me was kind, even if they gave me the look of a deer in headlights. Remember, the place was empty at this point. Perhaps I was the tail end of a rush, perhaps I signaled the start, either way, the thousand yard stare of the child behind the counter made me feel sorry for them.

I placed my order: a kids meal quesadilla (because I wasn’t that hungry) and the poor child behind the counter gave me a blank stare. Absurd request? Possibly, after all I’m not a child, yet there I was, ordering a child’s meal. What proceeded was a chaotic shuffle in which I had to tell the individual how to make the meal I had ordered. Poor thing was quite confused when I let them know my quesadilla was burning after they put it on the griddle and forgot about it. More confusion when I reminded them that the quesadilla was supposed to have meat in it (per the menu).

It’s ok, maybe it was their first day. Then a different individual started packing up my quesadilla after letting it sit on the counter for enough time that my burned quesadilla was now room temperature. At that point I reminded them that my meal came with beans, rice, and fruit. They obliged, but barely filled my child meal containers halfway, and the orange they gave me looked like someone’s toddler had already munched it and sucked out the juice—and it came with cheese and a tortilla strip stuck to it—at no extra charge!

Friends, I haven’t even told you the state of the food in the make station. Dried out, crusty, caked to the edges, in Every. Single. Container.

Why did I stay? I was in too deep. My social anxiety simply would not allow me to walk away, even though my stomach was already nervous.

I paid for my meal. Sorry I didn’t tip. I normally do, but I already knew I would not be eating my single orange slice, and I was not particularly looking forward to my extra toasty quesadilla.

I ate the quesadilla. I ate my beans. I picked a few more cross contamination items out of my rice. One red pepper, one mystery chunk with no identifiable smell and spongey yet still smearable consistency. I took a bite, but found it too dried out to be edible. You’d think these grains of rice had just been drained of life-giving moisture by Imhotep himself. Then I saw a piece of rice that had started to turn black. Not burned black, something else, something sinister lurked within that grain of rice—my ancestors whispered it to me. I did not eat anymore rice.

So I went home and had leftover pizza.

TLDR: Cafe Rio of Kuna, Thanks 4 the memories, even if they weren’t so great.

Ummm this is the second my husband has gone in to get us food. Don’t expect anyone to greet you or even look at you, they will just be on their phones and glance at you until they are done sending a text….my husband stood there for a solid 3 minutes before someone said “can I help you” he ordered me a salad, and he ordered a burrito and why it took so long certainly doesn’t make sense to me, but there was no rush so that isn’t something I’ll complain about, my husband had better customer service AS THE CUSTOMER, like why they were rude to him beats me. After my long 14 hour shift I was STARVING! So he comes home and there was no lettuce on my SALAD! See pic below! Weird service and not very friendly which is just sad because I love cafe rio food, but I’ll stick to the location near my work. Whoever owns this franchise needs to watch out because this place will soon not have anyone coming in ‍♀️

Every time is go here the service is so slow and terrible. Are they always short staffed? Today I was the only one in the drive through and had to wait 2-3 minutes to be greeted. Then it took another 3-5 minutes at the window. Here is my salad….no tortilla chips and sour cream. The salad doesn’t come with sour cream. Yet another disappointing drive through experience at Cafe Rio in Kuna!

I hate leaving a negative review at all unless its necessary and in this case it was. My wife and I have been coming here off and on for 3 years and it just gets worse and worse everytime. This time it was the tipping point to where we wont be returning ever again. Its a shame because we like some of the food here, but tonight everything we got was just gross. To start this off when we walked in it wasnt that busy there were 3 people ahead of us 2 online orders 1 door dash. The smell in there was bad like some chemical was burning, we didnt even get up to the ordering area and this kid says its going to be along time because we have tons of online orders. We stood there for 15 mins and watched how chaotic this place always is, 5 people on shift and nobody has any hustle to clear their online order que. Theres just alot of bsing and wandering around, finally they get 1 online order done and are almost done with the door dash order. After he got his food I hear him telling the kid that it is unacceptable on the wait time and he went on for abit. The kid comes over and asks us what we would like and ignores the 2nd online order completely and the guy walks out. My wife orders here food and asks for no rice and a little bit of black beans and the kid just piles the beans on and she repeats her self, so he dumps the black beans back in the container and has to have her repeat what kind of meat she wanted on there. Then my turn comes up its close to the same experience, we get to the next part for the lettuce, sour cream, etc. She tells him each thing and has to repeat her self over n over again, mean while one of the other co workers there keeps talking to him and distracting him. He wanders off then comes back and doesnt even finish her order so I say she wants cilantro on hers. He tells us they dont have cilantro and one of the other kids is standing behind him with a brand new full container of it. Then he takes the rest of my order and its the samething, every item had to be repeated we ask for our dressing he had to get more. He comes back, fills it back up, fills our things up then starts talking to the girl coworker about stuff and ignores us. We are in the home stretch here just needs to put a lid on our food bag it and get us chips and queso, instead he then wanders off again for a minute and comes back and puts the lids on gets our chips and queso. The whole interaction from start to finish was 35-40 mins, thats way to long. Worst part was when we got home to eat the queso had a metallic taste to it, the chips taste like they were cooked in old dirty oil and stank. The chicken in our tostada had so much watery juice our food was submerged and the dressing tasted horrible, nothing tasted normal and we ended up throwing alot of food away. Its to bad because normally we like them, but like I said it just keeps getting worse and worse. We definately are done with cafe rio not worth $30 plus for crappy food and horrible service.

Atrocious, all of it! Filthy dirty, staff completely unmotivated, unprofessional and unfriendly, and I’m guessing a lot of employee turnover since I never see the same people more than a couple of times. I love Cafe Rio, but KUNA Cafe Rio….what the hell is going on? When you first came to Kuna, I was sooo excited! Even though in the beginning you were slower than most, the food was good so not a big deal, but over time the restaurant started to look grimy, now it’s straight up disgusting. I’d still gamble on you because the food was usually good, of course I couldn’t go through drive-thru since you never got the order right. I’d still come in to order so I could make sure your staff was getting my order right even though they are chaotic, unorganized, short, or just completely checked out, because it was still good. But tonight 1/23/2026….. I have to say goodbye forever to you Kuna Cafe Rio. The food was terrible to put it simple. I’ll still go to the other ones in the valley, but we are done. It’s really sad to me too, Kuna needs a good “fresh” place for people, something different than the bland fast food and pizza places out here. You let us down and I’m not just talking about my family, you let Kuna down. If you don’t get your shit together there is no way you are going to stay in business that’s a fact. So my question to you is WHY? Why aren’t you correcting all of the issues and complaints and I’ve looked at your reviews there are soooo many but there are three (3) that are going to end your business 1-cleanliness 2-staff 3-food quality. You gotta start somewhere!

I love Cafe Rio and have good expereinces in thier restaurant but our expereince last night, at the Kuna location, was a disaster. When a family comes into the restaurant, to spend their money, it would nice to be greeted, listen to, and served properly. The young man behind the counter was completely unresponsive and disengaged from the entire process of preparing our food. He simply could have cared less. As we were trying to complete our order there were people behind us leaving. I can’t blame them. Honestly, we really did not expect the greatest service/food but last night the food wasn’t worth being treated as poorly as we were for simply trying to order our dinner. There are too many other options today for a restaurant to treat their customers like this. I hope the owners pay attention to all the other reviews saying the same thing and correct the problem.

Absolutely filthy, I’m surprised it hasn’t been shut down by the health department. And the cleanliness issue is just the start. The Kuna location needs a new franchise owner and new management. I’ve been to location a few dozen times over last few years. Every other one star review of this place is accurate, avoid it.
