Best for: A late-night dinner — it’s one of the rare spots open daily until 3 a.m.. Rua de São Bento, 212, Lisboa, Lisboa, 1200-821.

Amazing experience
Loved the retro atmosphere.
The food was overall great. One of the best tartars I ever had. Freshly chopped meat, amazingly dressed and seasoned
The gambas was great as well.
The steaks were cooked to perfection and of good quality. The creamy sauce is not my personal favorite we all preferred the plain grilled one.

Strong NYC vibes in this cozy, luxurious little dining room that has jazz and crooners playing in the background. Service is great and so is the steak which tastes much better than it looks in the photos. What can I say? It’s not a photogenic steak. Cocktails are solid and wine selection is too. Not the cheapest dinner but I’d be hard pressed to find a place that will treat you better for less. I consider it a very good value.

We had the best experience here! An absolute must eat in Lisbon. Make sure to try both the traditional and Portuguese style steaks. The decor and ambiance helped set the tone and the restaurant’s house red from Douro was to die for. We would definitely eat here again!

They are not kidding when they say this is the best steak in Lisbon. The Bife à Café de São Bento, with filet mignon, fries and the egg (yes, order the egg. You’re welcome) is absolutely to die for. Bonus for extra sauce and a little bread to eat with. Whenever we come to Lisbon, we must come here at least twice.

Spectacular. I had an extraordinary lunch here. In my view, this place serves the best filet mignon in town. The creamy coffee sauce pairs beautifully with the steak, and the fries are cooked to perfection. I also loved the creamed spinach as a side dish. The codfish au gratin is very good as well. For dessert, the apple tarte Tatin was jam-packed with flavour and built on a great base, and came with an amazing scoop of vanilla ice cream.
The ambience is extremely relaxing. The wooden interior is full of meticulous details, with artworks on the walls and memorabilia. Soft jazz plays in the background.
A final word for the staff: seasoned, courteous, and truly professional.

A perfect dinner at a prestigious, long-established steakhouse became one of the most memorable highlights of our trip to Portugal.
The exterior and interior of the restaurant exude timeless tradition and class.
The waiters’ seasoned, professional service was deeply respectful and admirable.
Every dish was outstanding, and the traditional-style steak in particular offered a unique flavor unlike anything I’ve tasted before.

We had a wonderful experience and meal. I, bungled the reservation process, but Nuno was nice enough to accommodate and create a table for us at what is one of the most unique steakhouses I have been in. The food was excellent. The service was better and the overall atmosphere was great. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed the entire experience. Will definitely come back the next time we are in Portugal.

Like a secret club, to enter Café de São Bento you must ring a bell. A waiter comes to open the door and all you can peak inside is the red velvet curtains which, once open, unveils what you will soon discover to be the best steak in Lisbon. in a refined setting. Make sure to book as this has been for the past 4 decades the go to place for locals seeking a good steak. We were the first into the door and lucky enough to be able to have the whole place to ourselves for a few minutes until the crowds arrived and the restaurant became lively and packed with people. The sauce of the famous File a Cafe Sao Bento is to die for and it’s recipe a well kept secret.

Very classic steak place in Lisbon, which is old school and interesting. We went to experience the decor and atmosphere. We first were seated on the main floor in the back room by the bathroom door with Library Book wallpaper – strange table. Luckily we asked to be moved, so they relocated us to the 1st floor at a table that was much better experience.
The food was alright but not exceptional. The menu is small with little options for non-meat (which is reasonable for a steak focused restaurant). We started with the garlic shrimp, which was good and what you would expect. Our son and I had filet steaks, 1 with and 1 without coffee/cream sauce. My wife had the Vegetables Wellington which was basically roasted veg in some pastry dough. The highlight of out food was the excellent chocolate cake and Port wine.
We are glad we have experienced Sao Bento in the original location, however, we will likely not return since Lisbon has such vast food options.

Café São Bento was the perfect place for our New Year’s dinner in Lisbon. From the moment you arrive at the classic green front door — ringing the bell and waiting to be welcomed inside — it already feels like you’ve discovered a hidden gem.
Inside, the wood-panelled walls, intimate tables, and old-bistro decor create a warm, timeless atmosphere. The service was excellent throughout the evening: attentive, polished, and genuinely welcoming. The wine was outstanding, and every part of the meal impressed us — from the bread service to the shrimps and jamón.
The filet mignon was unforgettable and easily the best steak I’ve ever had — perfectly cooked, incredibly tender, and full of flavour. To finish, the cheesecake and the “best” chocolate cake were the perfect ending to an exceptional meal.
Ending the year at Café São Bento was truly special. A must-visit in Lisbon.
