celebrated my birthday here yesterday,, the food was delicious and my family all loved their main dishes (2 of my family members got the full rack of lamb chops, 1 got the pesto chicken, 1 got a pasta of some sort, and i got the beef tenderloin, and we got calamari and each one of us had a drink), however the calamari lacked some calamari and was partly just the fried dough pieces, and the birthday cake is like frozen with the ice cream, it’s not very soft or moist, but my beef tenderloin was exquisite! the only issue i had is how the restaurant is run, we were not greeted for 7 or 8 minutes and there were an adequate amount of staff to accommodate the whole restaurant (there were 3 servers and 2 people helping out) as it is not very large, the the food service was incredibly slow and we waited 40 minutes for our mains to come out after we got the calamari (which also took some time), there is also no dedicated host so sometimes guests would walk in and they would be waiting awhile and when i walked in i was just stared at for some time before someone came up to me. overall a great food spot to eat as but the service is not amazing 🙁

I did not dine in but a family member got the birthday cake slice dessert as take out after dining in and wow this was delicious. It had caramel and cookie crumbs on the side. The cake itself has a nice thin layer of chocolate on the outside and vanilla and chocolate icecream between the cake. It was absolutely delicious. The cookie crumbs added a nice texture. It already tasted good without the caramel. Highly recommend this dessert.

My husband and l dined here on February 12 thinking the Dine About Winnipeg meals – 2 different offerings – would be good. However, other than dessert, both of our meals were extremely poor….horrible actually. My salmon was dry, overcooked and the sauce and rice hugely over-salted and of questionable quality, the added cauliflower making the plate lackluster. Definitely not what one would expect of a higher end restaurant and certainly not worth even half the price. I ate perhaps a sixth of the meal. My husband’s pasta appetizer and pasta meal looked both unappealing and tasted the same…he couldn’t finish either. He also felt the service was rather arrogant, condescending. So disappointing. We have always thought that this annual promotion was to promote the restaurant but it seemed like Cafe Carlo wanted the opposite…to discourage folks coming back. With one glass of wine and a small guilty tip our bill was plus $150 …and we went home hungry. We travel broadly and eat out at many restaurants but most definitely will not be back to this one. BTW this is my first negative review of a Winnipeg restaurant.

If you’re looking for a solid spot for a date night or a small celebration, Cafe Carlo is a great pick. The place has a cozy vibe that feels like a hidden gem. The food was delicious and the service was super friendly and helpful. I’d definitely come back and would recommend it to anyone looking for a chill but elevated dining experience.

One of the best service experiences I have had in Winnipeg, and I dine in many unique locations. Great wine, beer and menu items. They welcomed our table of three, which grew to four and with ease to accommodate us. Thank you Cafe Carlo for letting old friends catch up with some great eats! Cheers, Spicy Jan

I’ve been here twice now and I’ve left both times in a great mood and super content with how the entire service went. The appetizers were amazing, our server was very attentive and kind and there’s plenty of street parking around. One of my top resturaunts in Manitoba for sure!

Food was really good, including the delicious desserts we shared.

The atmosphere was good, though I do think they could benefit from some TLC in the bathrooms as they did feel kind of dingy/unclean due to wear and tear. Overall the reastuant has a nice vibe and aesthetic.

The service was unfortunately a bit awkward, felt the waitress was rushed (possibly was the only one serving that evening?). They were hard to flag down, and when they did come by – many times just pushing thier way through to get to the table to drop off or remove items without explaining why they were wanting to get into the table to do something. The ones filling up waters and such were engaging and easier to approach which helped. Personally just a little engament and getting to know what brings us out, suggestions, etc would have been nice and goes along way. We came in with gift bags as two of us were celebrating our actual birthdays that evening, so you’d possibly think that would engage some sort of conversation. It kinda put of a it of a bummer on the celebration.

I do recognize we came in the week of Christmas and that is going to be crazy busy but even explaining your busy and maybe short staffed, we would have been understanding. We felt as if we were a bit of an inconvenience which kinds sucked. They weren’t rude or anything, just don’t think they were aware of how they were coming across perhaps.

All in all we plan on coming back as the food is what we really enjoyed. Even though a friend who had recommended Cafe Calos shared they had the same kind of experience after I shared ours, they also enjoyed the food and said they would return as well.

We found Cafe Carlo to be so-so. The room is very loud and the tables are close together. We shared the prawn appetizer. The prawns were good but there was barely a hint of ginger in the dipping sauce. My husband had the meaty rigatoni which was disappointing. There was no depth of flavour – we have made much better baked pasta at home. I had the chicken pesto which was good. Overall we felt the food would have been better if they leaned into the flavours rather than going light on them. Service was mostly good although it felt like the server had too many tables. Having one more waiter on the floor would have improved the level of service.
Overall this is a casual spot that didnt live up to its reputation. It’s adequate but not great. It’s not a date night spot unless it’s a first date and you’re trying to keep it low key.

6 months ago I wrote a review on Cafe Carlo, below, today I’m pleased to announce they’re awesome! Food is consistently good and so is the service, just a little too tiny for my liking. Overall this place is a five-star experience, I’ll continue to dine at CC and keep you posted :). The following is my old review from 6 months ago: I’m not fully convinced this is a five-star joint, yet! I’ve ate here four times in the past three months and each time they miss something. First off, street parking is busy but manageable, entering is not fully welcoming due to its congestion and semi attentive staff, and if you have a coat, no place to hang it. One of the main issues here is its size to table ratio, if you’re not careful walking in you’ll take out the couple seated just inside the entrance, in general, close quarters.
Service is also hit or miss, one server was all around perfect, while another had sprinkles of attitude and arrogance, it left a bad taste.
Price is appropriate for what’s offered, you can have a salad and chowder and walk away unscathed or dig into the rack of lamb or seafood cannelloni and you can expect 40-70 bucks a plate, appropriate.
The food! If Carlo is on his game, you won’t be disappointed, however, if he’s having a crap day you will be. On a good day five stars all around, this is why CC has a great reputation, when their on, it’s amazing. Seafood Cannelloni on a Monday was over cooked and unfresh, on a Friday, spectacular!
Consistency is what’s missing, maintaining a high standard across the board is needed. Folks can’t afford to treat themselves and have a subpar experience, they won’t come back. CC has an opportunity to improve guests experience making it a must.
I can’t bring myself to give it a 5, it’s somewhere between 3 and 4. I’m going to keep going back and I’ll update my review if warranted, good luck CC!
