I ordered the French toast and it was a generous portion. Lots of fluffy French toast. The best fruit are the bananas. Grapes don’t seem to be very good in Costa Rica. The beans and rice are flavorful and delicious.
Not pictured is the tea and coffee that was ordered. I don’t suggest the tea since it’s a bit watered down, but the coffee was a good experience because they pour it in a traditional container and serve it.
There are some parking spots available in the front and on the side street. There’s a park next to the cafe that has a security guard who will shoo you away.
We arrived shortly after Cafe a la Moda opened and were greeted warmly right away. The space felt calm and welcoming, which was exactly what we needed after a long travel day. This was a spot we had bookmarked ahead of time, so we were excited to finally check it out.
One of the things that really stood out was the focus on coffee. They offer several different preparation methods, and I jumped at the chance to try coffee made with a ceramic Vandola, a traditional Costa Rican brewing method. It was a fun experience and a great way to kick off the trip. If you are into coffee, this place is worth a stop just for that alone.
For food, Anna ordered the avocado toast and I went with my usual move at a new cafe, the typical Costa Rican breakfast. Both were excellent. Everything tasted fresh, well prepared, and thoughtfully done. It felt like comfort food with just the right amount of care put into it. Exactly what you want after a long flight.
Between the friendly service, great coffee, and solid breakfast, the whole experience just worked. We left feeling refreshed and ready to take on the day, and we would absolutely come back here on a future visit. Highly recommended if you are staying in or passing through the San José area.

The food was well presented and tasty and the coffee was quite the experience, the coffee changed flavour as it cooled to sweet notes
