It got worse when that same bartender claimed that a customer’s card had declined, even though that exact same card worked perfectly fine just moments earlier with another bartender. This created unnecessary embarrassment and confusion and it is confirmed to be an honest payment mistake on the bartenders end and like he was deliberately trying to cause a problem. There was no disruptive behavior, yet his attitude was hostile and confrontational, which made the environment uncomfortable not only for that individual but for everyone nearby.
When the situation was escalated, the manager a large old bald man did not handle it professionally. He refused to disclose his name or discuss his staffs wrongful actions which is basic transparency in any customer-facing business. Instead of stepping in to calmly resolve the issue or calmly and support customers, he kept running away to the back, unwilling to take responsibility, which only made the situation worse.
Security staff also put their hands on myself and another guest who was calm and not acting aggressively, which was completely unnecessary.
Physical contact like that violates Pennsylvania State Law(in regard to assault, battery, etc.) shows a serious disregard for customer safety and proper legal conduct.
Overall, the experience reflected very poor customer service, lack of accountability, and an unwillingness from staff and management to properly address legitimate concerns. I hope Cafe 210 takes steps to better train their staff, improve professionalism and ensure that customers are treated fairly and respectfully. This is most importantly the case, especially because the staff has been analyzed and confirmed to be 100% in the wrong by industry leaders and legal professionals.
I trust that the staff’s mis-conduct can be further reviewed on security footage and interviews.
I then went to another bartender, and the same card worked without any issue, proving it was not a bank problem. When I calmly explained this, the first bartender became aggressive and shortly after I was removed from the establishment for no legitimate reason. This was only my second drink, and I was completely respectful the entire time.
Being kicked out after paying for a drink and not even being allowed to finish it is unacceptable customer service. Staff should treat paying customers with professionalism and respect, not hostility and accusations.
I won’t be returning, and I hope management addresses how customers are treated.
We asked the bouncer if there was a happy hour since there was a cover fee, and he said, “yes.” I go inside and ask the bartender for a happy hour item, and guess what? He says there’s no happy hour today. That was frustrating and misleading.
Moving on, we ordered drinks, which took forever to arrive. When they finally did, they were mediocre at best. Then we ordered onion rings, and they were basically burnt. They tasted terrible, like they had been sitting in old oil for too long.
The service was incredibly slow, and the staff seemed disinterested in providing a good experience. The overall atmosphere was disappointing as well; it felt more like a poorly managed dive bar than a lively café.
Cafe210 really needs to step up their game to stay relevant in the State College area. Better communication, faster service, and higher quality food are essential. Right now, it’s just not worth the time or money.
My family and I came to PSU for family weekend to visit our freshman and see his new home. We TRIED to come here for a drink and some food around 630pm. We were turned away at the door because the bouncers didn’t accept my 70 year old grandmother’s senior citizen ID because it “wasn’t a US issued ID”.……..let me repeat that again. ….THEY TURNED AWAY HER SENIOR CITIZEN ID……..Idiots. They told us it was the managers policy that anyone over 21 has to have a US issued ID (hers was from the Philippines) but they were willing to see her passport, which we left at home for safe keeping. The irony is, they said my 18 year old brother (who could easily pass for 21) was fine and didn’t need to show his ID because he was with our parents. I should’ve told them my grandma was under 21 but with her legal guardians, maybe they would’ve let us in that way.
In all, I don’t feel like we missed much anyway because from the other Google reviews, sounds like the service inside the cafe is just as terrible as at the door.
