First Visit — Delicious Food and Wonderful Hospitality
MOM and I made an impromptu first-time visit to C & E Southern Bites in Sterling, VA while exploring menu options for an upcoming Black History Month program at her retirement community and we are so glad we stopped in.
We were quickly greeted, and three young staff members answered questions, promptly took our order and served us with friendliness and efficiency.
Everything came out hot and fresh, and the fish was clearly cooked to order.
The swai catfish and whiting were perfectly seasoned and fried hard just as requested; crispy, flavorful, and satisfying.
We also enjoyed a wonderful variety of Southern comfort favorites, including collard greens with smoked turkey, crispy fried okra, delicious cornbread, and classic southern candied yams.
The mac & cheese was especially memorable; made with multiple types of cheese, enriched with chicken broth, and prepared without egg, resulting in a creamy, savory, perfectly balanced dish.
The hush puppies with onions were a standout, and the jumbo fried shrimp were cooked just right.
And the gumbo deserves special recognition.
It was beautifully crafted from a deeply developed dark roux and finished with tender chicken, hickory-smoked CONECUH sausage, aromatic vegetables, and traditional Cajun spices.
Rich, hearty, and full of authentic flavor.
Before leaving, we were especially grateful to Evans, one of the owners, who engaged us in a pleasant conversation for about 20 minutes.
His warmth, kindness, and genuine hospitality made our visit even more memorable.
This was more than just a meal.
It was a welcoming experience filled with great food and community spirit.
MOM is excited to consider C & E Southern Bites as part of her meaningful celebration during Black History Month and will definitely be back.

We’ve been coming to C&E Southern Bites for about two years now and have been loyal ever since our first visit. The swai catfish platters are always my go-tos, perfectly cooked every time. The greens are so juicy and full of flavor, and the mac and cheese is honestly perfect.
You can really taste the love in the food. Everything always feels like true southern comfort cooking, and that’s why we keep coming back. Definitely one of our favorite spots! ️✨

This is my second time ordering out and I highly recommend! So glad to find a local soul food place without having to venture out to DC or RVA. They ran out of the whole wings but the regular wings are just as good! Love all the sides and I like the whiting over the catfish but both very good. The banana pudding was amazing! Customer service is great and timely. Everything has been great and I hope they stay around for a long time.

I was greeted by two young men—one was cleaning tables, which I appreciated—and the cashier, Q, provided excellent customer service that stood out. I ordered the fried whiting fish platter (1 lb.) with mac and cheese and greens, along with four chicken wings. While the portions were generous, the food quality was very disappointing.
The fish and wings tasted like they were cooked in old grease. The fish was dark, overcooked, had no seasoning, and the ends were hard, as if it had been sitting for hours and reheated. I really was hoping the high reviews would reflect the food—but unfortunately, that wasn’t the case.
The fish was inedible, the chicken was just okay, and while the sides were decent, I felt like I wasted my money. I know what real soul food should taste like, and sadly, this missed the mark.
The staff was friendly and the place has potential, but the kitchen needs serious improvement. I hope they take honest feedback like this to heart.

This was my first time here. When I walked in, the restaurant was empty, so I thought, okay, maybe it’s the time of day. I was so excited to have some Southern food since I commute to the DMV from South Carolina for work, and I haven’t seen many places that offer what I was looking for.
Well, the fish wasn’t giving what it was supposed to provide. I don’t know if it was fried too long or if it was old fish sitting out but that thing was hard. I was struggling to tear it apart. No seasoning, tarter sauce was alright but I just couldn’t figure out why it was so tough. The yams I wasn’t sure if the dark brown stuff was nutmeg that was just poured on top or if it was cooked too long as well, it didn’t have flavor just bland. I also ordered collard greens you guess right no flavor. I ordered (forgot to take a picture )a sweet potato pie it was alright just need a dash of sweetness but thankfully I ordered a Fanta the only thing that tasted like something. Would I come back to try again… NO!! For what I spent on this food vs the quality I passed.

1st time patronizing this establishment. I’d recently seen an Instagram post of the food truck, to find they’ve opened a location in the DMV area was cool. I ordered the whiting and shrimp platter with Mac n cheese, cornbread and yams. About 15 minutes later, I was served. While I waited Nicholas and Q were friendly and they worked on other orders. I did not try the pie or pudding but was there. I did notice you can place your order at a computer when you enter. Everything was hot and tasted fresh (about 2p on a Friday). I will definitely come here again. The Mac n cheese tastes like auntie’s not quite grandma’s but still good. The yams tho omg delicious, not too sweet. I had the frish fried hard, it was perfect. I saw an Asian woman in the back, if she’s making all this southern food like this, you go girl. Whoever is the cook koodoo’s to you! I am definitely a new customer when I’m in town, very much so worth the price and wait for freshness!!!

It pains me to say how terrible the food was. I got a 6-piece whole wing chicken platter with collard greens and Mac & cheese. The food had zero seasoning. The chicken wasn’t cooked well, had a rubbery texture with zero flavor. The Mac & cheese did not taste anything like southern style. No flavor at all. The collard greens were seasoned okay. If you’re looking for flavorful soul food, this is not it! The service was sub par. I arrived when the email confirmation stated my order would be ready and it wasn’t. I waited an extra 15 min and didn’t even receive the sauces that I ordered. Lastly, definitely overpriced. I had high hopes and love supporting the limited minority business in the area but this is a strong no!

I’d been wanting to try this establishment for quite some time. The opportunity presented itself and I’m glad that I did. I ordered carry-out online and arrived promptly at the time they stated my order would be ready. There was no wait. I walked in, announced myself and they handed me my order — GREAT! The food was plentiful, hot, fresh and delicious. They did not skip a beat and everything I requested was in the bag, along with eating utensils and napkins. I got the 18-piece fried shrimp combo with two sides (fried okra and mac & cheese), cornbread and a variety of three sauces: Mambo, Boom-Boom and Tartar. My favorites of those were Boom-Boom and Tarter. The photo I included does no justice to how much food there was. There was an abundant amount of fried okra under the top tier of food in the container. The cornbread was good and the mac & cheese (not photographed) was ok. Don’t get me wrong. It wasn’t bad, but I like my mac & cheese a certain way and only certain folks in my corner have been able to totally nail it. I would like to try their hushpuppies, as I think they would be tasty from what I’ve experienced thus far with C & E. Again, I did not eat within the restaurant, so I can only grade on what I saw while there. It appeared clean, but very standard in regard to seating and atmosphere for a eatery. Not a deal breaker at all, because who needs all the glitz when you are just wanting to get your grub on? I’ll definitely order from them again soon and look forward to trying more of their menu items. I enjoyed my meal from C & E.
