A traditional Steak & Chophouse Restaurant has long been absent in Norfolk. When Byrd & Baldwin Bros. Steakhouse opened in 2006 we set out to fill this void. Housed in the circa 1906 building of the same name, Byrd & Baldwin Bros. Steakhouse was conceived and executed with a no compromise attitude rewarding guests with a memorable dining experience.
Traditional steakhouse fare (including beef aged on-site) served in an elegant, historic building.

The food was absolutely amazing. The lobster tail was cooked perfectly, the steak was tender and flavorful, and even the soup, salad, and dessert were top-tier. You can tell the chefs really care about presentation and taste. Every plate looked like fine-dining art.
But what really made the night special was our server Nehemiah. He was professional, attentive, and genuinely friendly the entire evening. He checked on us at the perfect times, made great recommendations, and helped make our Valentine’s celebration smooth and enjoyable. If you visit, definitely ask for Nehemiah you won’t be disappointed.
Service, food, and atmosphere were all 10/10. We felt welcomed and appreciated from start to finish. If you’re looking for a place for date night, anniversaries, or any special occasion, this restaurant is absolutely worth it. We will definitely be back!
We sat at a hi-top in the bar area, which is a nice, cellar-looking area in the lower level of the restaurant. Our server was excellent! She explained that she’s one of the sommeliers there and provided some pretty good feedback on their wine selection. Their menu is fairly typical of upper-end, prime steakhouses. There were many appetizing items to choose from, I had a tough time deciding. I was leaning towards their fried shrimp entrée, especially after seeing other people’s pictures of it on social media. I would never normally get this, but their shrimp pics looked amazing.
I started with their Greek salad – This was a HUGE salad, big enough for an entrée, especially if you add a protein to it. It was fabulous! Lots of fresh veggies in it, the dressing was excellent, and the flavors were so very good! This is definitely worthy of splitting, which I’ll do next time I return. Next up was my entrée and I chose their smaller filet with an add-on of fried shrimp. I really wanted to try this shrimp and this was a way that I could try their beef and the shrimp and this was an absolutely AMAZING entrée selection!!
The shrimp were HUGE! They were perfectly and beautifully battered and fried and looked stunning! The steak was spot-on! I ordered medium rare plus and if I had to guess from looking at it, it was probably 134-135 degrees! The flavor was great too! Their steak is definitely worthy of eating without any add-on or sauce.
For sides we tried their Mashed Potatoes and their Haricot Verts and both were outstanding! The nice thing about this place is they actually list half portions of sides in their menu! Many places offer it, but you have to ask and if it’s just two people dining, half portions are the perfect size.
Save room for dessert, they offer many options! In my case, I was so full, I simply opted for a scoop of their blood orange sorbet and it was the best finish for a great dinner.
Definitely will return and would recommend Byrd & Baldwin Bros for a nice evening and great dinner experience!
I’m incredibly impressed by the staff members and every dish we ordered.
I ordered the A5 Japanese Wagyu and it was the best steak I’ve had. The chef cooked it to perfection and it melted in my mouth. I cried a little once I finished the dish because I didn’t want it to end. This was definitely the star of the show. I ordered the onion and mushroom side with this, which was delicious, but this dish did not need any side.
I ordered the She Crab Soup as appetizer and it was tasty as well. Lastly, I ordered the Creme Brulee as dessert and I want to have it over again.
My husband ordered the New York Strip and he enjoyed that as well, cooked as requested! He also ordered the Key Lime Pie as dessert and said it was delicious!
Our food took a long time to come out and the waiter told us it seemed that way because we didn’t order any appetizers. To me this seemed like a money hustling response. We waited over 30 minutes for our food and ordered our steak medium rare and medium well. The medium rare steak was closer to rare than anything. It was extremely pink.
Our waiter had great etiquette but was not very personable. He seemed inauthentic to me, but was very attentive. He was nice to take off the steak fries but said he couldn’t take off the mashed potatoes as well. Despite it being a birthday reservation, you just get a card signed by the staff – no dessert like other restaurants.
Overall, I’d say it’s overpriced we spent $158 and tipped $22 so nearly $200 total. I’m not dissatisfied but I won’t be back either.
Two of the three saucers used for the steak sauces were chipped/broken at the rim, where the sauce would flow out, which is a direct food safety concern and unacceptable.
The asparagus was poorly prepared; the stems were not trimmed properly, and the bottoms were extremely tough and chewy, even though that portion is typically discarded.
The tomato and basil bisque with lobster did contain lobster chunks, but it also had lobster shell fragments in the soup, which should not have been present. When I asked the server about it, he brushed it off.
Despite having made a reservation in advance, we were seated by the entrance even though many tables inside remained empty throughout our visit.
We spent approximately $600 and did not receive the level of service or quality of food that would justify that price. I did not want to make a fuss because it was a special day, and I did not want to ruin it for everyone. I had a good experience last year, which is why I returned, but this visit was absolutely horrendous. I will never revisit and would not recommend this place to anyone.
