My Vietnamese friends told me this is a rare soup and hard to find. The fish cakes were very good and I’m glad they sliced them thin. I don’t know how I feel about dill in Vietnamese soup. The broth was a tad on the sweeter side but this is my first time trying it so I don’t know it’s authentically supposed to be the sweet. You can taste the fish/shrimp paste as a main flavor component.

I was drawn to this place by the Bun Cha title…. Was truly hoping to find the bun cha that I recently had in Hanoi only to not being able to find it…. It was different, have a smaller dipping bowl with more of a sauce than a soup for mixing with the noodles. In Hanoi, the char from the BBQ meats when mixed the dipping soup creates such a delicious flavor that makes me crave for all the time…. Only unable to find it….. the portion was large and lots of protein and noodle. However, the spring rolls are just too dense to eat more of….

Tucked away in an unassuming corner of the city, Bun Cha Ca Hoang Yen is the kind of place you discover once and immediately start telling your friends about. From the moment you walk in, the comforting aroma of simmering broth, herbs, and spices fills the air a promise of the meal to come.
What sets this spot apart is the depth of flavour in their pho. The broth is rich yet clean, slow-cooked to perfection with a delicate balance of sweetness and spice. Every spoonful delivers that signature warmth that only true Vietnamese comfort food can bring. The noodles are soft but never soggy, the beef tender and thinly sliced, and the fresh herbs add the perfect finishing touch.
Beyond the pho, the restaurant also offers a variety of authentic Vietnamese dishes that showcase the same level of care and freshness. Whether it’s the crispy spring rolls, the bun cha, or their specialty fish cake soup, everything feels crafted with tradition and pride.
The atmosphere is simple, casual, and welcoming, exactly how a great pho spot should be. Service is quick and friendly, and even when the place gets busy, your bowl arrives piping hot and ready to revive your spirit.

The portion is big and affordable. The fresh vegetables are provided generously. The soup is hot and less MSG. Well located in down town. The staff are friendly and served less waiting time.

Good portion. Really like the fillings they do in their Vietnamese spring rolls. But didn’t like the sauce they have for the salad rolls. Lemon grass chicken are tasty but the lemon grass pork are a bit too thin and dry for me. This place is always busy. I like the fact that you could just walk in and sit at an available table. Also good condiment selections at the table: siracha, chili oil, hoisin sauce. Also, like how they put the toddler’s highchair on top of the regular chair to secure in place.

Bun Cha Ca Hoang Yen on Victoria is easily one of the best Vietnamese spots in the city. It’s always busy and for good reason. Even if you have to wait, it’s worth every minute.
The broth is unreal, so much depth and flavour, and it just ties everything together. All the veggies are fresh and crisp, and you get a generous amount of meat so every bite feels balanced. It’s one of those meals that’s hearty and satisfying but still feels healthy, loaded with fresh herbs and greens.
Portions are big, prices are fair, and the staff make the experience even better. They’re always welcoming, quick to help, and happy to guide you if you’re not sure what to order.
It’s a true neighbourhood go-to that keeps locals coming back, and once you try it, you’ll see why.
