The bánh canh cua was also great. The broth was thick and well seasoned, with flavors of seafood, chives, onions, and fresh coriander. There is also a unique, peppery nutmeg flavor from the annatto oil. There were quail eggs and large shrimp, but not very much crab meat, which makes sense for the price of the dish. The noodles are hand-cut but quite soft.
The service os friendly and fast, and the restaurant is situated in a food court inside Mekong Plaza.
Banh cuon w/ cha (rice sheet wrap with ground meat) – looks good but taste ok. Not enough basils and the sauce is bland.
Bun Mam (fermented fish noodle soup) excellent. Highly recommended
Bun thit nuong- vermicelli with bbq pork. Very good. The pork has good lemongrass flavor and very juicy and tender. Very good and highly recommended.
Bahn Xeo is like candy for food lovers!
Paired with a plate of lettuce leaves and sweet Thai Basil because you want to eat Bahn Xeo like it’s a wrap, a lettuce wrap. You place of piece of Bahn Xeo, along with a little bit of pickled carrots and radish and a leaf of Thai Basil inside a lettuce leaf and wrap it like an egg roll. Dip the wrap in the sweetened fish sauce and eat.
NOTE: 9 out of 10 Restaurants will NOT make Bahn Xeo. This restaurant is the same. I just so happened to show up at a time when 2 Aunties were visiting and the good nephew who owns the restaurant was making them Bahn Xeo. The Aunties pulled some strings for me. Thank you Aunties Lin and Yu! 🙂
Now, in regards to the food, it was not anything that I would recommend. I ordered number 204, which was the duck soup and number 207, with pork. The broth came separate and the duck, noodles and cabbage in another container. The duck had many bones and it was hard to eat. The taste of the entire soup did not make me go crazy , it’s not what I thought it would be. The second meal , number 207 on the menu – the noodles were cold and only the meat was warm. The taste was ok, nothing that I would recommend either.
At this point , in my opinion pho soup is the best so far in the Vietnamese cuisine.
The pork hock and beef were slightly tough and flat tasting, the slices of pork were flavorless except for the peppercorns embedded within them, and the broth itself was above average but not memorable. The quantity was decent and the price was good. Overall I rate this place slightly above average. If I crave bun bo hue and I’m in the area I would definitely consider stopping in to have a bowl.
