Since 1964, Bull Valley has operated under several families as the Bull Valley Inn, The Bull Valley Restaurant and now Bull Valley Roadhouse. This historical restaurant provides classic American fare & cocktails expertly made in a pre-prohibition building in Port Costa, California.
Family-style American fare & pre-Prohibition cocktails served in circa-1897 digs with period decor.

We were pretty excited about coming here having heard about it from an article at one point in time. Overall, it was not bad at all but we found the prices pretty high for the quality of the food we got. I had personally ordered a medium ribeye because I find most places do medium rare a little too rare, but this was much more leaning well done likely due to it being a thinner cut and cooking fast. We also had asked one of the waiters about an allergy question who disappeared completely afterwards and led us to asking another who ended up getting us the answer pretty quickly.
Everything else was great and we would probably come back for drinks again as the menu for those looked fantastic.

We have been patrons of Bull Valley for over 6 years. We go for all kinds of celebrations. And all was excellent for years. We just celebrated my birthday there this past weekend and to my surprise the food quality was not great. We had a medium size party of 8 adults and the bill was over $700. I’m not complaining about price, we know we will be spending when we go, but when chicken tastes better at Costco than a well loved restaurant, it’s depressing. The fried chicken didn’t taste right…we kept trying to figure it out, and bottom line, it may have just been off. The smoked pork chop, which is a favorite, was bitter and the astringent smoke taste lingered, the greens also lacked flavor and salt. The pulled pork was dry and salty. The fish was lacking excitement, it was good but needed acid to cut through the rich sauce. The Mac and cheese was very good, the addition of chiles was a great choice. The deviled eggs were ok, they used to come with a delicious crunchy spicy XO sauce…we missed it dearly. The liver pate was so BITTER, and pate is one of my personal favs. Man, it breaks my heart to keep going. The coffee, cocktails and desserts were delicious. Staff was super nice as always. Love this place and hoping when we return, they take the time to look at reviews to make adjustments.

We had our wedding reception at the Bull Valley Road house. Kimberly helped us every step of the way. She and the rest of the staff were so prepared and accommodating. Food and drinks were exceptional. It really was just the perfect place for celebrating with friends and family. Ambience and decor were beautiful. 10/10 would recommend for any occasion. But our wedding was really perfect. Also, the Lost Costa drink was my favorite!!!!!!!! Thank you to everyone at Bull Valley Road house!

For how expensive this restaurant is, I expected more. The ambiance has always been amazing, but I remember there being a better food menu previously. Our server was amazing and super knowledgeable, but the team clearing tables and delivering food seemed very new and uncomfortable. They didn’t seem to know how to get a tables attention with their hands full, and also offered to box up our leftovers which we then never received. At nearly $100 per person, I expected more (especially having dined here in past years and having had a stellar experience back then). I would come back but maybe only for drinks…

We had high hopes for this Bull Valley Roadhouse, but our Sunday night visit left us scratching our heads. The place has a charming reputation, but in reality, the design feels more shabby than vintage, with an odd, musty smell lingering through the backyard patio that made outdoor seating nearly unbearable anywhere you look (better not).
Service was a major letdown — we waited over an hour for our food despite the place being nearly empty. The menu is limited, surprisingly so, especially for a spot with an enormous, borderline excessive alcohol list (fife time the size of the food menu). You’d think they’d swap some of those cocktail options for more food choices. The standout was the brussels sprouts in home marinade and bruschetta with two slices of toast. Smoked pork chop had some unique sweet plum on the side. Louisiana rock shrimp, halibut, grilled broccolini, steak were below average to even talk about.
To top it off, our bill for six people came to a staggering $884. For what we got, it felt seriously overpriced. We’re still trying to figure out why there’s a waitlist when the place is half full. Disappointing in too many ways to fully recommend, but it has potential if they clean up the experience – literally and figuratively.

Awaiting you at the end of the road is a step back to when Port Costa was a thriving wheat port on the bay. The Roadhouse offers craft cocktails at the vintage bar and generous plates on an inviting patio. This is a great weekend getaway.

Everyone should make the trip to this tiny historic corner of California. Huge culinary cocktail list, menu full of smoked options and lovely flavors. Fried chicken is tasty with just the right crunch and succulent white meat. Pork chop tender and enjoyed. Although I don’t prefer the smoky taste my the group did and the meat was cooked to perfection. Best of all was the friendly and helpful waitstaff, especially Jamie who was so patient as she described multiple drinks and entrees with a delightful smile. We dined outside in the garden with a heat lamp. Inside is chock full of history and taxidermy. Just go and enjoy.

First off the drive there is a cool little windy road just outside of, Crockett. It will take you to the cute enclave of Porta Costa. In the restaraunt you will see many old pics and and taxidermy and the ambiance of Victorian. I loved the food! I loved the service. Thank you, Parker! The bartender welcomed us in. Everyone on the staff we met were very friendly and accomodating. Parker had a down to earth hospitality and checked on us throughout the dinner. I took a chance on the fish (with Thai sauce ) and a side of the carrots (puttanesca sauce with ricotta green onions and cilantro giving it an Asian flair). I loved it paired with a hazy IPA on draftI Wife was happy with the spaghetti and fresh clams. I wished they would stay open later but we were there till 15 min after closing and there were still patrons at the bar. But you can also check the Warehouse Cafe across the street if they have to kick you out. ☺️

Excellent restaurant with a truly remarkable atmosphere and top-notch food. The drinks and the salad were truly outstanding, whereas the burgers and fish were very good but not superlative. Next time we visit, probably will stick to the small plates, which may be the best dishes at an already excellent restaurant. Great for dates and fancy nights out.

Absolutely love this place. For me it was first time in Port Costa and first time in this restaurant. Stepping in felt like stepping into another century which was a super cool experience…going through the door was like going through a time capsule. Food was delicious, service was great and ambiance gets the highest point and desire to come back
