The ropa vieja bowl (shredded beef, rice, beans, & plantains) was perfectly balanced and didn’t feel heavy at all. The banana-leaf tamales was the best we’ve ever had.
We’ll definitely come back soon to try other dishes.
We happened on the amazing little place when the restaurant we were planning on going to was closed. WE ARE SO VERY LUCKY!! This was hands down some of the best food I have ever had in my life!! Amazing depth of flavor in every dish. The empanadas were so flaky, and even with the very juicy shredded beef they did not get soggy at all.
The nachos had delicious shredded chicken with amazing black beans and I kid you not, cheese like I have never tasted on nachos. I don’t know what kind of magic she put in them, and I love me all kinds of cheese so I eat it a lot, these were the best nachos I have ever had.
My son also had a strawberry smoothie made with coconut cream that I was ready to fight him for (I didn’t, I let him have it, but it crossed my mind).
Last and definitely not lest, the shredded beef bowl. I LOVE sweet plantains. I will go out of my way to find them, so I was excited to see a dish with them. I was not disappointed in any way!! The juicy beef, that was perfectly seasoned with just a little tiny kick of spice, mixed with perfectly cooked rice and black beans that I could eat all alone for a meal, we combined with magical sweet plantains. I am a carnivore, I always want meat with a meal, and I would happily surrender even this incredible beef to have all the plantains.
On top of all of this amazing food, the staff was incredible. I felt like we were eating dinner at a new friends house. They were that welcoming and even at closing time were so nice and accommodating (next time we will make sure we get there earlier).
There were 5 of us that shared these 3 dishes and it was plenty, and we are fluffy people! i had to compose myself when I was saying thank you to them for providing such an amazing meal and an incredibly affordable price. Less than $100, after tip, for an authentic and mind blowing meal for 5.
This will be our new go to in old town AND THEY ARE OPENING A NEW ONE BY Barela’s next month. I can’t wait to try their breakfast menu there.
The fried plantains were the best savory plantains I’ve ever had! They were crunchy from outside but moist from inside. The accompanying sauces were delicious.
The vegan tamale was also tasty. The black bean one was amazin as well. They were steamed in plantain in leaves which gave them a great flavour
The ingredients used seemed fresh and good quality.
They were other options for vegetarian food that we clearly marked in the menu. The owner was willing to customize our food to make it less or more hot to your liking .
Overall excellent experience. Will definitely come back to try other things on the menu
We ordered the Pork Tamale and the Lapiz Combo but unfortunately I was given a Chicken Tamale instead of the pork I had ordered.
Chicken Tamale – flavor was good it was the first time I had peas, rice, and red pepper in a tamale. It was a very large tamale the size of two and 1/2 normal tamales so $9 seemed fair.
Lapiz Combo – it was good not super flavorful but the bread was nice and toasted. The yuca fries were good but needed salt and the slaw was okay. It was a okay portion for $23.
It seems like the prices online compared to the restaurant are a bit different more expensive in store.
Overall pretty good experience. The staff was really nice.
