Whether you joined us for the first time, or have been a Buckhorn Tavern regular for decades, we are happy to have you walk through our doors.
All our meat is ground fresh daily, hand-rolled into half-pound portions then hand pressed into burger patties and cooked to medium-well and our french fries are cut to order.
This special attention to detail on every order in our tiny kitchen causes our ticket times to run a little long. Please keep this in mind when stopping in. But, it is worth the wait, just ask Bobby Flay, “Best Green Chile Cheeseburger in the World.”

We stopped in after a day at Bosque park, as we had seen this on the NM Chili Cheeseburger Trail. The best burger ever! What makes it so great is the burger itself is like a homemade burger. Everything just melds together for a delicious experience. The chips and salsa are also way worth it- I haven’t had any better! The fries were yummy and obviously homemade and onion rings were pretty good- but not the best ever. Over all- we tried several chili cheeseburgers in NM and Texas- this place had THE best burger and chips and salsa!

A friend recommended this place after stumbling acrossed it themselves. Even came picked me up to drive me the 5 hours there. Well I can tell you it was worth every minute. Absolutely delicious. Perfectly cooked burger. Burger was juicy. Burger topping we all fresh. Bun was soft and fresh. Home made fries. I’ll definitely be back.

On a quiet road, the adobe structure stands with a slow cook recipe that has turned this place into a local dynasty. Dressed like wataburger, the smothered green chili drips from the edges with nothing but chard deliciousness. Fries are straight out of a hand dye cut with skins hanging on at cubed ends. A Mexican cola to wash this Southwestern treat down. Locals keep coming and that is a true sign of what is good in this hood.

This place is not on the way to anywhere, but the food was worth the trip. As stated in other reviews, the exterior is deceiving.
I had the Buckhorn Burger (green chili cheeseburger) that beat Bobby Flay.
Having eaten 3 different versions of the GCC in the last 30 hours, this is easily the best I’ve had. You can taste the fresh ground meat, and it was cooked perfectly. The chili topping is spicy but not crazy.
The fresh cut fries were spectacular, washed down with a couple ice cold, local craft beers.
The sweet, friendly gal serving us ran her tail off to make sure we wanted for nothing. And they have a small selection of souvenirs and local goods to browse while your food cooks.
The building is aged and dingy, dark inside even. But the food and service makes all that forgettable.
I recommend this restaurant.

The best green chile cheeseburger I have ever had. The wait Staff is always friendly and attentive and I really like the rustic atmosphere. The burgers are so good that i almost always do in when I’m passing by. It’s close to the exit and easy to find. Although I love their fries, which are hand cut, the burger is so big that I rarely get them together, and I’m a bug eater.

One of our favorites. We stopped on our way home and had the Buckhorn Burger. The buns were perfect (not soggy), patty cooked completely and a little bit of spice in the green chile. Be sure and have lots of napkins ready! We never drive by without stopping. Also, it’s so reasonable. You won’t find a better priced burger that is so good!

We stopped by here after leaving the Bosque del Apache and I am so glad we did. We were made to feel so welcome. The staff, especially Emily, went out of their way to make me feel welcomed and among friends. I am gay and was wearing a merman shirt and, as a Canadian, was a bit nervous travelling in rural areas of the USA right now with everything going on. Going to this restaurant washed all those fears away. They laughed, joked, smiled, wanted to get to know me, share about their own lives, families, etc. The staff made me feel l as though I was among friends I didn’t know I had.
As for the food, it was excellent, far better than I expected. The highlight was the Suiza Emchilada with Fred’s mushroom sauce. It was WOW!!
Do not miss this place. It is a gem in the desert!

In February 2025, we visited the Buckhorn Tavern in San Antonio, New Mexico. It is a quaint restaurant, just off of Interstate 25, towards Las Cruces, NM and close to Truth or Consequences, NM. The food was absolutely delicious. Buckhorn Tavern claims to be the 7th best hamburger restaurant in the United States, based on independent reviews, and I completely agree. The decorations were cleverly displayed and we enjoyed eating in the outdoor patio. The restaurant was also crowded and had a wait list, showing that many other people have also figured out the high food quality. This was a delicious and fun experience, and I highly recommend Buckhorn Tavern in San Antonio, New Mexico.

Not a place to stop if you’re on any sort of timeline. Burgers and fries are delicious, yes, but the wait times are brutal. We showed up with 3 hungry kids, waited 20 minutes for a table, then sat for about 45 more minutes waiting for a straightforward order of 2 burgers, 2 hot dogs, and a side of fries. The waitress was apologetic and we had read in advance that ticket times take longer due to the made to order style of food… but, 1.5 hours for roadside burgers on paper plates just doesn’t make sense. Again, the food is good. And the bathrooms were surprisingly clean! But the wait is just too much. We won’t recommend.
