Buca di Beppo – Family-style Italian Restaurants

Buca di Beppo celebrates the hearty cooking of Southern Italy. It’s a place where you can smell the homemade marinara sauce before you reach the door.

As soon as we walked to the door, we were greeted with a smile, we got the table and the service was amazing, wonderful people too. The food was exquisite and delicious. I cannot give this place nothing more than excellent, the drinks are delicious and greate size for the price.

Take out order for party of 8, paid extra for chicken… there were a few pieces in the pasta. Then the spicy rigatoni had also a few pieces of chicken and dried out noodles.. some were pale with no sauce! This is my first time ordering since my last time when the bread slices they gave me had MOLD!!!

We went for Thanksgiving dinner. There were twelve us and we had a private room. Staff was very attentive and friendly and service was excellent. We got the family style turkey dinner for six and a few dishes off the menu and had more than sufficient food. Food was hot and very good. We took several containers of leftovers home. Patricia, the GM, stopped in to see how we were doing and that we had everything we needed.

I’ve been coming here for years, usually to celebrate a birthday or when family is in town. Since, everything is served family style it’s definitely best for larger groups. My rating is loosely based on my most recent trip described below.

On a recent trip, the sparkle of the place was completely diminished. We had reservations in the early evening and the place was quiet with few tables seated. However, the service was incredibly slow and our server was often scarce. The bartender had also disappeared or had not arrived yet, so it took nearly 20 minutes for two drinks. We saw our waiter eventually hop behind the bar, but when I tasted my Sangria, it tasted like a watered down flavored water. Yeah. All of the food was delicious, but it came to us after a really long wait and it was cold. The pasta was just warm, but the broccoli was straight up cold. I suspect that they were understaffed and couldn’t keep up with the crowd that started to filter in as the night progressed. But cold food? That’s a huge disappointment when you’re spending family style prices.

We did not make a reservation, not sure if that was an important factor in us having a sub-par experience.
We were told the wait was 10 minutes but it ended up being closer to 20 minutes which was not really a big deal but during this time, we watched a waiter getting mad and lecturing a (I think) newer employee. After we were seated, we overheard 2 staff members complaining about covering someone’s shift. To me this felt awkward especially since we were in a less crowded part of the restaurant. Feels like this conversation should be done elsewhere.
The waitress took our order a little after 6PM but when we asked about the happy hour, we were told that we missed it even though the poster in the waiting area says 7PM. I know we should have shown them the poster but I was paranoid about the safety of my food if we were to do that….
My favorite part about my meal was the complimentary bread. It was soft inside and a little crunchy outside. The fried mozzarella was a little too salty. Our pasta came with a mountain of ground beef in the sauce but taste nothing special, like straight out of a jar.
I guess Buca di Beppo is one of those places that people go to and get disappointed but will forget about it in a few years before the cycle continues.

My initial dislike of this place was the pricing. I saw $39.99 for chicken parmesean and almost left… but decided to stay because we already had our drinks. When the meal arrived, I was amazed by the 3 large portions of chicken parmesean. I then realized the meal is meant to be shared as it is served with platter utensils to serve others.
The chicken tasted pretty good, but I tasted nothing in the marinara that was special or even tasty.
The service was absolutely nothing to praise. We were not offered any bread until it was requested. Our waitress walked past our table 4X before I flagged down a waiter that had passed my table twice for a drink refill.
The building and decor are dated and well worn. The bathroom was also well worn but was clean. The cushions in our booth seating literally had springs pushing up and should have been replaced years ago. The poop stains on the toilet seat were gross.

I could see coming here if I had to feed the visiting grandkids or the like as the portion sizes make this place very economical when feeding (paying for) a group.
Overall, I did not come with a group as it was just the two of us on a date. Since we eat out often, this place was a dud.
We did not visit here to forfeit flavor for portion size. The mediocre (flat) flavor, combined with poor service and a very run-down facility, make this a disappointing visit.
And what’s with the head on the lazy-susan with the bust of a Pope?

When you walked in into the restaurant, makes you feel like you are somewhere in Southern Italy!

The decor was very nice, very Italian, photos throughout the restaurant and small nooks and cranny’ with a table here and there!

All the plate and menu items are in family style and size. A small portion will be enough for three people, large one will be enough for 5 .

Service are the weak spot for the restaurant, not watching the drinks are ready for refill! We have to ask for extra napkins!

This is the restaurant that can hold big parties for birthday or other events. But without improvements for service, I don’t see myself coming back at anytime soon!

This restaurant has a warm and cozy atmosphere for large parties.

However, the quality of the food is an insult, not only to the diners, but to the standards of Italian cuisine. The best I can say is that it’s filling for those who eat the food.

For a party of 12, we had a huge pile of spaghetti which was topped with an insufficient amount of cheap grocery store sauce. The lasagna was dry. How does that happen? The Chicken Parm was decent, even though the chicken was dry and under seasoned. Oh, and it was no surprise to see “Kraft” parmesan cheese in a shaker on the table. The food may be a feast for the eyes, but not for the palate.

This was my first visit and we had such a nice time. It was a weekend so they serve all family style dishes. This was new for us, so thankfully are wonderful server, Lydia, explained everything to us and answered a million questions. She also made sure our drinks remained full and checked in to be sure we liked what we ordered. It was just two of us so we ordered the Apple salad with Gorgonzola and then the dish that had four or five different styles of stuffed pasta. The food was delicious, no heavenly, with so much left to take home for two more full meals. Even for family style dishes, portions were super generous. Lydia made sure we had proper containers and a large bag for what he hadn’t eaten. I can’t wait to bring the entire family back. I plan to call ahead and make reservations to see if Lydia can be our server again. It’s a big yes for us.

Buca di Beppo is definitely a must try! The food is really good, and the place is filled with interesting photos and decor to look at. The staff is friendly and welcoming. We stopped by for an early lunch and enjoyed some appetizers, but I’ve also tried their main dishes on other visits they’re always great.
