Despite all of that, a few employees genuinely made it worth coming back. Not only did they know my order as soon as I walked in, but they also built strong connections with other regular customers. I would often see workers from Sea Breeze coming in during lunch, and we’d all talk with the staff, it felt like a small community that made the experience welcoming and familiar.
Then the new management came in and decided the solution to the past problems was to let go of the people who actually held the place together. Instead of fixing understaffing, poor training, and leadership issues, the real root causes, they removed the staff that customers trusted and returned for.
Now the atmosphere is different, the service is slower, and the place feels like it’s starting over without any of the relationships that kept customers loyal. I’ve also noticed a sudden wave of unusually positive online reviews that don’t reflect the current state of the restaurant, which only adds to the disappointment.
I was here often enough to know what was actually failing before, and this change has made things worse, not better. Because of that, I’ll be taking my business elsewhere. Losing the employees who cared was the last straw.
The food used to have personality. Now the burritos show up looking like they were assembled during an earthquake. One half is lava-hot, the other half is frozen like it came straight from Antarctica. Lettuce? There’s enough in there to create a backyard salad. Meat? Somewhere… probably hiding.
Flavor-wise, everything tastes like it’s been bullied out of having a personality. The queso has the consistency of melted crayon. The chips snap like drywall. The beans… well, I’m still not convinced those were actually beans.
And the service? You walk in and the energy is “We weren’t expecting customers today.” They hand you your bag like they’re passing off a secret document and you should leave quickly before anyone notices.
Meanwhile, the internet is suddenly full of 5-star reviews talking about a place that sounds incredible, a parallel universe version of this restaurant where ingredients are fresh, burritos hold together, and customers don’t leave questioning their life choices. I’d love to visit that location.
This place went from “quirky but charming” to “a case study in self-sabotage.” The only thing consistent anymore is disappointment… and the lettuce. Always the lettuce.
1 star.
If you’re craving chaos and soggy tortillas, this is your spot.
Otherwise, consider literally any other source of food. Even vending machines are a safer bet.
Jeffrey, who’s usually the one helping me out, has been fantastic. He’s always friendly and attentive and he’s got some great recommendations. He suggested I try the nachos with salsa on the side, which I do from time to time and they’re always a good call. He also recommended the fried Oreos, which I decided to give a try—those don’t disappoint at all! They’re the perfect sweet treat after a meal. I also appreciate the little details, like how the staff greets me warmly every time I walk in. It really makes a difference and adds to the relaxed vibe of the place.
I plan to start using their mobile app soon, since I’ve heard it offers discounts and a points system—definitely a nice perk for someone who’s planning to keep coming back.
The only small thing I’d mention is that during busy hours, around 7:30 pm, it can get a bit hectic with just one person taking and making orders. I understand that this is likely a staffing decision made by the management or owner and I don’t fault the staff at all—they’re always doing their best. I just hope you can find a way to improve the experience during peak times in the future.
Overall, Bubakoo’s Burritos in Lincoln Park is a fantastic spot with tasty food, friendly staff and a chill atmosphere. I highly recommend it for anyone looking for delicious, customizable Mexican-inspired dishes that cater to all ages and dietary preferences.
That said, I was a bit disappointed that some items we were interested in weren’t in stock at the moment. Also, I noticed that the restrooms weren’t in the best condition. I understand that this isn’t the staff’s fault, but it does give the impression that the owner might not be paying enough attention to those details.
We’re definitely planning to come back soon to try more of the menu. Keep up the good work, you’re doing a wonderful job!
+1 for the joke he made: “Why should you never share a secret with a burrito?” “Because they tend to spill the beans.”
At one point, I asked for extra cheese — and I swear they sprinkled on about four sad shreds like it was gold dust from the last cow on Earth. The salsa was watery, the rice was dry, and the “fresh ingredients” looked like they’d been through emotional trauma.
Do yourself a favor and just go to Chipotle. Their burritos actually stay together, the guac tastes like avocado instead of disappointment, and you’ll leave feeling like a human being instead of a cautionary tale.
0/10 — would not recommend unless you’re doing a field study on regret.
