For this week’s ROMEO (Retired Old Men Eating Out) Club adventure we headed for the highly recommended Brooklyn Pizza and Pasta Restaurant in Helena. As we stepped into this mom and pop pizza shop I couldn’t help but notice the warm, inviting environment. The main wall is painted orange. The facing wall is a warm wood siding. Red paint gives a sun-shiny feel to the ceiling. Brightly colored paintings on one wall portray the Italian side of the menu, while the artwork on the opposite wall focuses on the namesake Brooklyn Bridge, leading Otto to ask, “What does the Brooklyn Bridge have to do with Italian food?” So I quickly made up a story about “Brooklyn” being the name of a very famous city in Italy. (For the record, I don’t think he believed me for even an instant.) The background music was fairly soft. I didn’t recognize any of the artists, except for one 1970s cover.
We arrived a few minutes before they opened. A gal named Catherine unlocked the doors, and then cheerfully greeted us. She was very helpful, describing the different available options. “Ready now” pizza slices and mini stromboli were tantalizingly displayed up front.
I ordered a Bacon Cheeseburger and Pickle Mini Stromboli. The bacon was not cooked in strips like you would expect on a cheeseburger but was ground up to make it work better in a stromboli. The stromboli had a good portion of burger and cheese (with little pickle chunks) and was served with a plastic container of marinara dipping sauce. When Catherine offered me the choice of either marinara or ranch dipping sauce I was a little confused because I generally never dip a bacon cheeseburger in either of those options. Better options would be ketchup and mustard for dipping. I think the concept of the Bacon Cheeseburger and Pickle Stromboli is good and I admired their out-of-the-box thinking, but part of what makes a good burger great are the fresh toppings; the lettuce, tomato, onions, and a special sauce. This bacon cheeseburger and pickle mini stromboli was lacking those necessary decorations. All that being said, I didn’t love my meal. It’s an interesting concept, but it needs some “tweaking.” Next time we go I’ll stick with a more traditional calzone. (My wife absolutely loves their calzones. She orders a large one and splits it with her sister.)
Otto ordered the Italian Grinder with all the fixin’s and a pasta salad on the side. The grinder was very filling and Otto was only able to get through half of it. The ham was sliced pretty thick. Interestingly, she gave Otto his pasta salad to eat while they were making his sandwich. Then, when they delivered his sandwich to our table they gave him an additional bowl of pasta salad, which he promptly slid across the table to me.
The pasta salad had a nice blend of textures with black olives, pickle chunks, and onions mixed in with the rotini noodles, but the flavor was a little bland for my taste. I added lots of Parmesan and some salt and that improved the flavor.
This is a great place to grab a quick lunch, like pizza by the slice, salad, or any of their other great menu options. I observed a steady stream of customers, many of whom appeared to be regulars. The prices are ridiculously low, and without me asking Catherine thanked me for my service and gave me a veteran’s discount, which is always appreciated. I definitely feel that I could also become a regular here based on the service, the quality of the food, and the prices.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The pizza was fresh, tasty, and loaded with toppings. I loved everything about it and the best part is, we had leftovers to enjoy the next day!
Highly recommend this place if you’re looking for great pizza in Helena.
Had the spaghetti with meatballs, kids portion….yes that photo is of the kids portion. The girl behind the counter recommended the spaghetti but warned me it was large and recommended the kids size which was actually perfect.
The spaghetti and meatballs are made to order and she informed me it would take a little longer before it was ready, she said 20 minutes but it was more like under 15min. Both the spaghetti and meatballs were fresh and piping hot when they was brought to my table. The sauce is simple but it was all good.
Only downside if you want to call it that was the bread stick that came with the meal as it was room temperature or essentially cold. I mentioned it to the girl and she apologized and said their oven was broken that normally keeps them warm.
Otherwise everything was good and can see this as a great place to grab a quick bite or a meal to go.
Prices are ok, and at least they cook the pizza for you, unlike Steffano’s. I grew up in NJ, so maybe I set the bar too high. But I had NY-style pizza in Cheyenne, and it was solid. We won’t return.
Let me start by saying, it started off great!
Please allow me to set the stage.
We don’t live here in Helena. After a double header game of soccer in Livingston, MT. My son and I decided to take a pit stop on our way home here in Helena. We are staying in a hotel with only necessities. We used the app to order.
Story:
Our food looked wonderful when it arrived. I ordered a salad with ranch and bare wings with ranch. For my 12 yrs old. Shrimp scampi and garlic knots.
I am posting pictures of the before and after.
My food arrived with some sort of a house dressing and no ranch. I did call the store, and they were more than happy to send out some ranch. Fantastic! (Remember, it started out well) When my son started to eat his shrimp scampi, we found out that there was such a heavy hand of red pepper flakes on the pasta that his mouth immediately started to burn. I double-checked after eating a bite, and my mouth too was on burning! And I like heat.
I knew the ranch was on its way and didn’t want to call the store again so I tried to fix his food by rinsing it off and picking off all the red peppers but it was too late all the pasta had absorbed the heat and that plate was a straight level 10 of red pepper flakes heat.
I am pretty diligent when it comes to ordering online. I thought to myself. Maybe I missed something, so I looked at the app again. There is NO mention of red pepper flakes in the shrimp scampi pasta.
I made the decision to call the store back again. This time, I spoke to David, the manager, and he did not have a smile over the phone for me. I brought up the app and how it does not say “red pepper flakes” on the ingredients. He informed me that that’s a special that they run. Diversion for my issue. I did say, “Okay! Well, that still doesn’t address that my 12 YR OLD sons mouth is ON FIRE!” Friends, no joke he replied with,”Well, ya know you did get what you paid for!” Inner thought: “Uhm…excuse me!?”
Long story long….he offered to refund our scampi to the card. We ordered food at 6ish, and I am finalizing this review at 915 pm. My lips are still on fire! And there is still no credit on our card.
What a disappointment!
Decor has “Shakey’s Pizza” vibes, and the artwork really sets the place apart.
The food choices are also excellent, they do Stromboli, (better than calzone IMO), and have gluten free crust for those of us who need it.
