ORIGINAL POST: This past Friday night was my first visit to BrewRiver. Since I have been to New Orleans in the past and loved the food, I was looking forward to the Shrimp Po’ Boy on the menu.
I sat in the bar so I could watch the band Mystic Mile perform, and they were great. I wish I could say as much for my Po’ Boy.
As shown in the photo, it was huge! As soon as I saw it, I knew I was going to need to eat some of it with a fork before I could get it down to being a manageable sandwich, especially since it had 13 nice-sized pieces of breaded shrimp. There was so much on the French bread roll that I could not even see the roll. The shrimp were perfectly cooked and tasty, and the homemade pickle slices added a nice touch. However, once I got to the point of trying to eat it as a sandwich, I was very disappointed to find that the roll had a hard crust and tough interior. It definitely was not crisp on the outside with a flaky, paper-thin crust and airy on the inside, which is how Po’ Boy rolls were in NOLA. I took two bites of the roll and decided I would finish the shrimp with a fork.
I ordered the Bananas Foster bread pudding for dessert. It had a great flavor, but the banana pieces were hard, like biting into an undercooked carrot.
Overall the bar service was good, but the food quality was mixed since it tasted great but had some big flaws.
BTW, if you’re a big fan of root beer, try their draft root beer. It was extremely tasty.
I wanted so much for this to be a great experience, but I have yet to decide if I’ll return to give them another try.
Pros:
– the étouffée was flavorful, although the rice was not fresh.
– shrimp po boy was very good, sauce was great.
Cons:
– the fried oysters were not good at all. They were very oily and had a weird off flavor.
– the menu could use more diverse options instead of all deep fried dishes.
– the decor needs some serious work. Everything was a bit off with no cohesion and all very generic generally. For example the lighting, the chairs, the wall decorations, the dish-ware, and the bathroom setup.
I probably won’t go here again as nothing in particular draws me back. I appreciate this place as a local restaurant so I’m giving it four stars, but it could be an awesome local spot if some changes were made. I wouldn’t recommend to a friend right now.
Our server, Rachel, was phenomenal. She was warm, attentive, and made us feel so welcome from start to finish. It’s rare to find service this genuinely caring and professional.
The atmosphere was equally wonderful—inviting, lively, and filled with the energy of people who clearly love what they do. It’s even more special knowing this amazing place is owned by a friend; you can truly feel the passion and pride behind every detail.
We enjoyed every single minute of our time here. If you’re looking for a restaurant that delivers incredible food, impeccable service, and a vibrant, heartfelt experience, Brew River Creole Kitchen is the place to go!
Can’t wait to come back soon!
Food: Oh my god… we got the gumbo poutine, alligator and chicken, and jambalaya to split. The portion sizes are great, the flavor outstanding. Can’t say enough! We also got the banana bread pudding, equally incredible.
Ambiance: The restaurant is super cool and big with different vibes depending on where you’re sitting. Love the live music. Can’t wait to come back when it’s nice out and eat on the patio!
Service is usually good, but today the beer took a while to arrive. And the busser seemed to care more about our dish experience than the server himself. Very disappointed, and I hope it’s a one-off thing.
The food was close to Nola it just slightly missed. The menu didn’t have red beans and rice. They didn’t have cornbread or serve you bread with saucy dishes. They want you to drink and I understand why. The server Richena was excellent . The price per portion are off. They are slightly small. The music isn’t loud just the way I like it. The bread fosters was very good.
