Breaking Dawn Brunch – Los Gatos, CA – joe coffee
Reviews
The menu is pleasantly concise. For appetizers, we chose the Banh Xeo Taco and Pho Poutine. For the main course, we ordered the Resting Brunch Face (RBF) and Crispy Pork Belly Fried Rice.
We also tried the “Sleep When You’re Dead” (Café Sua Da) and coconut coffee. The food was delicious. I particularly enjoyed the Banh Xeo Taco and Crispy Pork Belly Fried Rice. The coffee was also excellent. While the prices are on the higher side given the portions, it’s understandable given the Los Gatos location and the unique dining experience they aim to provide.
Hubby and I wanted to go on a brunch date and stumbled upon this spot. We dig it!
It’s a Vietnamese fusion brunch spot, and tbh, I get a little skeptical when it comes to Asian fusion flavors in a non-Vietnamese area. The staff is very courteous. The atmosphere is lively, they have live music on the weekends I believe. The live music can get a bit loud, but if you don’t mind it, then you’ll enjoy it.
We were intrigued by the phở poutine, so that was one of the items we ordered. We also ordered bánh xèo tacos, salted crema coffee, and fried chicken burger. The poutine was BOMB!!!! SO GOOD! We were so shocked at how good it was and how it actually tasted like phở! The coffee was incredible. I’m not a coffee person and I wanted to finish the whole drink myself! Bánh xèo tacos was a no go for me. It was very hard and dry, the sauce was okay, not as much umami as I’d like it to be. Actual bánh xèo doesn’t become hard even when you leave it out for a bit.
Fast forward to July 2025, we came back.
This time we ordered pho poutine, salted crema coffee, burrito, and a burger from the burger bot. Poutine and coffee were solid! Just as good as the previous year. Burrito was lacking flavor to me, it was very one note. My husband said the burger was pretty good. They have a robot making the burger in the restaurant and it was pretty cool.
We’ve already decided we will no longer share the pho poutine but will be getting an order each, lol!
Bottom line: Worth venturing out, go for it!
Drinks were very good! Highly recommend! Drinks did come out slowly and service was slow in general but the servers were super nice.
This host girl kept trying to rush our table even though other tables who were seated before us were still all sitting at their tables not being rushed. Furthermore, there were multiple open tables and no other customers waiting to be seated so not sure why the rush. My mom asked for more hot water for her tea again (had asked 15min earlier but didn’t get any), this host girl kept trying to pressure my mom to take her tea to go instead of allowing us to remain at the table. When my mom resisted and said she wanted to drink her tea at the table, this girl rolled her eyes and then came back with two cups of hot water and angrily slammed them on the table. She was so aggressive with her movements that the water sloshed over the cups edges and spilled on my sister’s bag. Then this girl stomped away without even apologizing for spilling on customer’s belonging. Luckily it was just water so we did not say anything. Note that there were multiple open tables and no other customers waiting to be seated so not sure why the rush.
So based on the mediocre food, chaotic atmosphere, and rude staff, I won’t be coming back here when there are so many other restaurant options in Los Gatos downtown.
I was a bit nervous about how my Viet company would feel about the fusion dishes like Pho Poutine and Ban Xeo Tacos. Before we received them, they wanted to try the Ca Phe Sua Da aka Vietnamese Coffee. To my relief, they both thought it was good. The Pho Poutine had a decadent gravy and chunks of stewed beef covering crispy half crescent- shaped fries. It was good but a little heavy for breakfast. The Ban Xeo Tacos were creative but the fried texture made them shell-like and very oily. The Crispy Pork Belly Rice with a fried egg on top is a tasty crowd pleaser.
In subsequent trips, we tried the Loco Moco, that also has the same pho gravy on the Poutine. Our Tongan friend who lived in Hawaii thought it was the best Loco Moco he ever had. The Bo Ne was also solid. The Soba Noodle Salad with soybeans is healthy and delicious.
The service is friendly and pretty quick. The only negative for me is the loudness of the space. I understand that having a DJ play is part of the owner’s concept, but when you’ve got a big reflective space, pumping loud music into it makes it harder to hear what people are saying and a bit less enjoyable. I’m a musician and former DJ, so I can appreciate music in certain settings at a reasonable volume level. Their fusion dishes are superb, but it would be nice if the ambience of the restaurant enhanced that brunch experience rather than cater to more of a drinking and club crowd. Maybe save the club music and DJs for the evening crowd of First Born, the dinner concept that takes over the same space for Breaking Dawn.
I love their Iced Coconut Vietnamese coffee! It has fresh shredded coconut on top. I wish it was a bigger size for the price though. We also tried their Banh Xeo tacos. It’s pretty good size for one person each. It comes with good sauce. We had their Loco Moco which was good. We also liked their Pho Poutine which was beef with curly steak like fries. We had a dessert to complete our meal. The Coconut Pandan Pann Cotta was excellent and smooth. Not too sweet either.
Service was great as well as the food. I would definitely come back to try their additional dishes especially their Ube Pancakes. I would recommend this place to try if you’re in the area.
The service was great, though. The staff was really attentive. However, I did notice that there weren’t any salt and pepper shakers on the table. It’s a small thing, but I think it would be helpful to have them available. I needed them for my food, and all the servers seemed really busy.
As for the food, it was just okay. Nothing too special. I get the feeling they’re still figuring things out, especially since they might start serving dinner later on.
Overall, it was a decent experience, and I think with a few adjustments, it could become a top spot for any meal.
