Sure, I’ve had KFC, Church’s, and Popeyes. I’ve had it at Hollyhock Hill, Kopper Kettle, and The Eagle. I’ve eaten legs, wings, thighs, and breasts— battered and fried to a crispy golden brown.
But last week I had fried chicken at Brau Haus in Oldenburg, Indiana, and it was an entirely new experience.
Inside we found room after room of dining space, with a bar running parallel. It was pretty quiet when we arrived, but it picked up through lunch time.
Debating the menu amongst ourselves, we finally ordered:
Pork Schnitzel Dinner x 2 with Sauerkraut and Potato Pancakes
Whole Chicken
Hand Cut Pork Tenderloin with Pickle Fries
The schnitzel came on a bed of gravy topped with a boiled egg. It was fantastic. For my aunt it was the standout dish. The potato pancakes were small, thin, and crispy— absolutely delicious. The sauerkraut was literally the best I’ve ever had. Black pan scrapings gave it a nice charred accent.
The chicken was fried perfectly. The breading was generously salted and peppered, complimenting the juicy meat. Each bite was an explosion of flavor. For me, the chicken was the standout dish. It was the best fried chicken I’ve ever eaten.
I’ve tried many different breaded pork tenderloins over the years and this one would be counted near the top. With the same peppery essence, the breading was quite crunchy. The pork cutlet was twice the size of the bun and I topped it with mayo, lettuce, pickles, and tomato.
The pickle fries were an unexpected standout. Dipped in the included chipotle sauce they were sweet, salty, and crunchy. They’re technically a fruit, right?
It was an excellent lunch.
Very friendly staff, and a nice outdoor seating area. There’s a reason it’s our favorite in Oldenburg. We stop when we’re through here, a few times a year!
In the end the meal was not only stellar, but the atmosphere was super friendly and nostalgic.
I had the chance to get served and pleasure to meet “poo” hope i spelled the nickname right. She said the town was mostly filled with locals and all unique nicknames.
She gave me a quick rundown on town and history of restaurant, including fact it was the same home she grew up in.
Can’t wait to get back and try the local bar next door and hopefully see their summer festival which to me sounds a lot like a German Oktoberfest.
Keep up the great work and 5 stars for sure
Comes with potato cakes and they are outstanding. Perfectly seasoned and very little grease. Also comes with good sauerkraut and a side salad.
Staff is friendly and professional. If you’re anywhere near Oldenburg and you love German food, you should prioritize this place.
