Service
The service was so quick, friendly and thoughtful, with our coats taken at the door, questions about the menu answered kindly and regular check-ins at the table in a way that was respectful and non-invasive. It was an exemplary dining experience that many restaurants could learn from.
Food
We treated ourselves to the French onion soup and the burrata to start, both of which were tasty, and dishes we knew well.
I would say these were satisfactory, with the french onion soup having an unconventional brie cheese topping which was an enjoyable twist, full of flavour, but perhaps lacking a little umami / depth to the stock that felt slightly acidic to our palate. On the whole though: delicious.
The burrata was fairly solid, and tomatoes paired with them were a little tough and lower quality – granted we were dining in January, so hardly the season for vine ripened tomatoes! The textures in this dish were exciting, with dynamism coming from the crunch of the bruschetta and added flavour from the pesto – with a little extra salt and a bit of lemon, this familiar dish would have scored higher, but still very much settled a hungry stomach!
Moving to the mains, the star of the show was the lamb, with pops of complex flavour coming from the goats cheese, babaganoush, mint and jus, and some aubergine to give the perfectly cooked lamb dish some variety on the plate. This was closely seconded by the dirty mash, which as something we’d never experienced before, we agreed could have been a main in and of itself ! Buttery mash, tender venison – a mouth-watering side that stole the show.
On the subject of stealing the show: the chips (french fries) that came alongside the flank steak were the topic of conversation for most of the night! We were kindly informed that their unbeatable quality of crunch, bite, rough edges and fluffy interior were down to the potato variety itself: Pierre Koffman. This, alongside a delectable salad featuring dainty thinly julienned pickles and bright peppery greens brought this steak dish to life. I made the mistake of requesting the steak rare, despite medium being the recommendation, and while I still enjoyed it, the meat was a little cold and chewy, so worth listening to the waiters ‘pour la cuisson’!
Full to the brim, we gave the basque cheesecake a try, and would say that the highlight of the show was the orange ice-cream, with beautifully decorated ganache & orange piping. The cheesecake could have been smoother to our liking, and our palate perhaps craved a classic basque in contrast to this chocolatey version.
Drinks were beautifully served, mine with a lavender garnish, perhaps meriting some more lavender oil / bitters and a saline drop or two to balance the lemons sourness. The wine went down a treat, and on the whole we felt very well cared for.
Atmosphere
Beau brasserie would be worth a visit just for the fries alone, but if that left you whelmed, the environment itself might shift things. Quiet, intimate, cosy and professional – we found ourselves at 4.30pm dining in a beautifully lit, romantic setting of a hotel restaurant, admiring the french imagery and posters dotted about, rating our toilet experience with 8.9/10 complete with cotton hand towels and hand conditioner and appreciating the attention to detail around placement of a small hygienic metal loop on the toilet lid to support lifting it with ease. It has to be said however that this is not an accessible friendly building, with many stairs in place to find these toilets. On our way out, we noticed an even more cosy arrangement with red velvet seats that we would definitely request to be seated at next time!
Very worth it with the First Table 50% discount ! A bit pricey otherwise.
Very friendly staff. Ambience was great, decor quirky. Our server Joe was attentive as was Lajos. Great choice of cocktails! Starter was bread and butter presented on a board and tasted great. Salmon dish was tasty and again presented well. Steak was also cooked to perfection. Crème Brûlée to finish. Service was great and will definitely return soon. Highly recommend Brasserie Beau for service, friendly staff and great dining experience.
I’m not someone who generally gives negative reviews, but there was just a lot to be a desired here and I’m hoping they can improve with some specific criticisms.
The ambiance and the price gave off a high quality feel, however, the food was very lackluster. The service was great, especially the host who was very friendly. The alcoholic beverage I ordered was perfect and delicious.
The homemade bread starter was also absolutely delicious, but it’s unfortunate that it was the highlight out of everything I had. The French onion soup was bland, and under salted. I also got the steak dish, which was under seasoned and the cook on it was very inconsistent. I ordered it medium, but most of it was closer to rare, which to be honest I normally wouldn’t mind except that it was also very chewy. The shoestring fries that came with it were cooked perfectly and came out hot, but also under salted. It came with a peppercorn sauce as well, which essentially didn’t change the flavor at all since the sauce was also under salted and bland.
Overall, I could see the vision, and I could see the potential, but it just didn’t live up to the hype.
I was eating early, around 5pm, so there was plenty of seating. The staff were courteous and the service quick.
Food presentation was very nice and the dishes I had were packed with flavour.
As well as plenty of seating inside there is outside seating too which was very busy by the time I left, mainly people with sundowner drinks.
