Food was absolutely outstanding. We had the Loaded Tater Tots as a starter, my husband had the pepperoni pizza, and I had the Chicken Cordon Bleu special. The garlic aioli with the tots was particularly delicious and the pizza had the perfect proportions of toppings. My chicken was the real showstopper as a roulade and I was so glad I ordered it!

This place was great. We were in the area for an event, and found this place. I’m so glad I stopped in.

The wait was long; unfortunately we were there on a holiday. But, we grabbed a seat at the bar, when they opened up.

I ordered a tea and burger. Eventually when it came out and remade, it did come out hot, fresh, and fully cooked. I do know they were having a busy night, but my food ended up being awesome!

I would definitely stop back in if I was in the area. I recommend this spot, if you haven’t been here.

It’s right at the train station. So you can see and hear the train fly through, when you’re seating.

The building is also very nice, with dark mood lighting; it’s definitely a cool spot to stop at.

I recently tried Boxcar Bar for dinner.

The food and beverage quality was very good. I had the Romaine Wedge Salad with Blackened Chicken ($27). They have a nice but small collection of draft beers, and some good choices in bottle (Peroni).

The service was outstanding, very nice bartender.

The atmosphere is exceptional, it is a very nice space.

Overall, a very good customer experience. Perhaps somewhat pricey.

Feedback

I’m not sure about the ventilation … I felt like my clothes “smelled like the place” afterwards … even my backpack smelled.

Box car has to be one of the coolest and best kept secrets. It is legit inside the Short Hills train station. Transformer meets cuisine. I’m embarrassed to say that I’ve lived in the area for a couple of decades and have never had the pleasure of stopping in before. Well, today everything changed. From the time we walked in until the time we walked out everyone on the team here was extremely welcoming and spot on professional. We had the distinct pleasure of having Carlos take care of us tonight. He is the consummate professional, and went completely out of his way to make sure we were satisfied. He recommended amazing menu options. The cocktails and entrée were expertly prepared, truly delicious and made with the absolute finest ingredients. Treat yourself and your family to a great experience and go to boxcar today! God Bless America! God Bless Blue & Gold! Remember Everyone Deployed Everyday!

What about awesome concept for a restaurant, there is a bar and a few tables on one side of the building, and when the train station closes they turn the other half into a dining room. Very cool, and they have plenty of outdoor seating as well. Great bar with local brews on tap, and a very good bourbon selection. The food was amazing. The loaded tater tots, wings, pizzas, burger and fries were all excellent. The staff was second to none, attentive and informed about what they had to offer, and they couldn’t have been friendlier. You won’t be disappointed here!

WOW, WOW, WOW. The best dinner and drinks we’ve had in a while. Super attentive staff and the owner is on premises checking in on all his guests. The seasonal cocktails and craft beers were great. Crystal our server had great suggestions and checked on us several times. Super fresh ingredients and house made.. everything! Mahi mahi tacos and station burger did not disappoint. The loaded tater tots were some of the best we had and they were huge.

Wish that we lived a little closer so this could be a mainstay for us but we’ll definitely stop in next time we’re in the area. Thank you Sean for a great evening!

I take the train from Short Hills to New York a few times per week. When I look at this building I’m not thinking about a bar or a restaurant, I’m thinking, “this is where I have to go to get to work”. I’m thinking, “this just looks like a train station that was built a century ago and was converted into a bar and restaurant for the sake of modern times”. That being said, I do see people in here on cold early what, drinking coffee and whatnot. I do not think that the early morning activity is in any way affiliated with this review. I’m talking to all you people who have to get to New York for work. As far as my review for the “Boxcar Bar”, The food was good and the drinks were good and the service was okay. It’s a bar with food. Don’t expect anything special, but it should meet your expectations. I live in Springfield so I’m happy this place is close for the evening hours. They close relatively early. Try it out. I would come here again and again. As long as it’s AFTER work… you know what I mean.

My friends and I got together after work for drinks and food. When I arrived I parked on the street nearby. At first I didn’t see where the restaurant was but it is located right by the train station. I walked in and found some seats by the bar where we sat. Amy was our bartender and she was good. I only drank so I had Merlot. My friends got food and drinks which they enjoyed. There is no happy hour here fyi. The bill wasn’t too bad. All in all we enjoyed our time.

Had a wonderful date-night with my husband at Boxcar Bar & Grill recently! The food was delicious & the staff, especially Carlos, was great! We thoroughly enjoyed our romaine wedge salads & station burgers. We topped off our meal with house-made blueberry peach cobbler that was awesome! Looking forward to going back very soon!

Had a great dinner. The restaurant is inside an old train station long train station benches in part of the restaurant. We had rice balls and meatballs as our appetizer that were excellent. The rice balls were crispy on the outside. The sauce was very good. The pizza ovens were not working the night we were there which was unfortunate since we wanted pizza but the waiter offered us free rice balls to make up for our disappointment which was a class move on his part. We both ended up getting burgers with toppings and they were good although the buns were nothing special. We both ordered the fries well done and both of our fries came out well done! Overall we had a great time and really enjoyed our meal. My only complaint is that the water and soda glasses are ridiculously narrow and small so you are constantly having to get refills even though they came quickly. Just get bigger glasses
