Stopped by Boss Hog’s Chicken & BBQ in Washington, NC and it did NOT disappoint.
The pulled BBQ was tender, smoky, and packed with flavor, you can tell it’s done right and not rushed. The green beans and cabbage tasted homemade, seasoned perfectly with that true Southern style. Everything had that “Sunday after church” comfort food vibe.
And don’t skip dessert. The pie was the perfect finish! RIch, layered, and topped with whipped cream. Absolute win.
If you’re looking for legit Southern BBQ with classic sides done the right way, this spot delivers. We’ll definitely be back.

Friendly staff, great food and fixings. Banging Iced tea. Reasonable priced. I will be back to try some more.

My favorite place for chicken and pastry. Last couple of times too salty to eat. Hush puppies are the best anywhere! Staff always friendly and helpful. Now just cut the salt back a little, please.

A friend of mine took me here for Christmas it was terrific. I prefer the ‘Eastern North Carolina’ barbaque sauce which is vinegar not tomato based and Boss Hogg’s delivers. The in store display (think Panda Express) shows you exactly what you’ll get. Every meal comes with hush puppies and I also got baked beans and some kind of potatoes. The baked beans had peaches in it and were delicious (after I picked out the peaches! I am a Yankee after all) The potatoes were good but I don’t eat very much at 1 time so I concentrated on the BBQ pork. The picture of my plate was taken AFTER I completely stuffed myself! For me it was enough for 3 meals. My friend got a fried pork chop that was excellent. The staff was super friendly (I am glad to live in the south again). It’s moderately priced. The check was $35 for the 2 of us but we actually got 5 servings so I think for the ambience, service and food it’s a good value. Highly recommended!

In town for the night and was craving some Eastern N Carolina bbq, so we decided to try Boss Hog’s, disappointing.
Walked in and all the bbq, ribs, chicken and sides were all on display in the glass warmer for you to choose. We both got bbq and ribs with a couple sides with a drink, $30.00!! Ribs were tough, not tender at all, bbq had decent flavor but nothing close to the Eastern NC style I was hoping for. More like reheated gas station bbq, collard greens and baked beans were ok, nothing to get excited about. Overall the only thing missing were gas pumps out front, beer cooler and scratch off tickets.

Visited establishment and got the ribs and bbq. The bbq was so dry and I could not eat it. When they put sauce on the ribs they poured so much in got into my potatoes and sweet potatoe fluff. For $30.00 I expected a lot better quality food. Will not return

Supposed to be pepper steak over rice but had the texture and thick gravy like beef tips over rice. For me, the green peppers did not add to this dish. The cabbage tasted like canned food. One bite and I was done. The buttered potatoes were the best dish but served very very hot temperature. Burnt my tongue eating them. / Meatloaf dinner normally very good. One bad plate where cook was too heavy handed on the seasoning.

It used to be good and has fallen off over the last couple of visits to cost that much you would expect a better quality of food.

First off the serving line is backwards because they have a menu where the entre drives the sides so without asking what the entre is they have you select the sides then the entre. The server at the sides section just asks “Vegetables?” in an unpleasant tone. Then a person was peeling potatoes in the office with a bag of potatoes on the desk and tossing the peeled potatoes into a bin on the floor.

We took our order home and were extremely disappointed. The collard greens were not even remotely good. The white rice was tea colored and the hamburger steaks were cooked to the point of petrification. The pork BBQ was not good. The hushpuppies were good. The over all flavors were just bad, as a testament to the quality we threw most of the food away.

This is a cafeteria style restaurant with very good service. The staff were very kind and helpful. I even enjoyed the whole atmosphere of the place. The food however was overcooked. I mean from the veggies to the meatloaf.

I am so saddened and disappointed that a restaurant that used to be so well known for its friendly service, delicious food and amazing atmosphere and vibe has taken a complete NOSE DIVE and has now become a memory that I would like to forget….. I used to live in Greenville and we used to come every weekend to get a brisket plate and if we were lucky, we would catch the turkey wings plate, so I researched it today because we were coming through Greenville I wanted to take my mom to get their turkey wing plate. Now I’m African-American and like I said we used to go to this restaurant every weekend for years, I walk in the restaurant and there are no faces behind the counter that look anywhere near mine anymore, and they are all teenagers, and one is standing around on his phone. The other a young lady and then two more gentlemen are standing back there not saying anything. Then one of the gentlemen finally says oh can I get something for you? How are you doing which I say well thank you I appreciate somebody speaking to me and he smiled and apologized. The only one that spoke by the way. I ordered a veggie plate and a turkey wing plate for my mother. I’ve been to 100 different restaurants because I also travel for my job and any restaurant that I’ve ever been to that has a veggie plate they give you that main compartment, the big compartment full of your vegetable, your main vegetable and then they give you two side vegetables, which is a small smaller portion so this is what I was expecting so I asked for the veggie plate which was $10 by the way, and he said he was giving me three scoops one scoop of each of the three vegetables, so he gives me a small scoop of each vegetable. Anybody that cooks and I’m a cook so I cook I burn…. you can tell cause I got the jiggly arms. You know the fat people arms. That’s when you know they cook good so I cook good. The rice was not translucent. It was like white white, which means that it probably wasn’t done and I should’ve known better but I got it anyway. The turkey wing plate and a veggie plate and it came to 30 some dollars but if I’m paying $10 for a veggie plate, it should be more than three little scoops. A older lady came out of the back and I was asking about the plates and she got a little attitude and told me it was probably a larger portion back in the day because they weren’t supposed to give that much. Then I asked her about the staff and why NOONE that was there before was still there and she kind of laughed and said yes EVERYONE is new except two people but the people that I knew were off today. Now mind you the whole staff was very unwelcoming and it definitely didn’t feel like it used to. I got to the car and we opened our stuff up. I took one bite of the rice and it was crunchy I should’ve known better. And the macaroni and cheese…..Baby when I tell you I’m a macaroni and cheese connoisseur, the macaroni and cheese was mushy in your mouth like I’m talking about mushy like mashed potatoes mushy unbelievable. Now I’ve had my share of not so good food but this was not edible. The cabbage tasted like water, NO FLAVOR. The potatoes were more butter than potatoes and the turkey was DRY and that’s CRAZY considering it was DROWNING in gravy on a bed of crunchy rice. Now I would never just give a negative review without speaking on the positives. They did give me napkins and the hushpuppies were delicious and there was plenty of parking for it to be 12:30pm on a Saturday. If you want good southern food and this is your only choice…. Just stay home. It’s not worth it at all. And to the FORMER staff members that made it what it WAS please hit a sista up and let me know where yall went so I can go eat there!
