Reviews
Tried them for lunch today, they were busy but were seated promptly.
The place smells fantastic. The aroma of smoked bbq wafts through the air.
Good selection on the menu of all the bbq staples, plus burgers, tacos, tenders, salads and hotdogs! (And more)
The smoked chicken is a star. Smoky, juicy and tasty.
The brisket is likewise a star. Beefy, seasoned well and moist.
The wings are good. The pulled pork is good and the smoked sausage is very tasty.
Beans were good. The Elote Corn is a star side item! Fries are normal crinkle cut.
You’ll not leave hungry.
Friendly service.
Will return.
The service was amazing, and Kody, the owner, is awesome—friendly, welcoming, and clearly passionate about the place. Great food, great people, and a spot I’ll definitely be coming back to.
Also, I checked $20-30 for amount spent, but there are many options that will get you a good meal for under $20.
Further, I don’t know how I went to a BBQ place and got hit with a burger craving, but that’s what happened. As soon as I saw the word ‘smash burger’, I was done. Ha! But I was gifted with a sample rib and I will talk about that too.
Details:
We were a party of 3: myself, my brother, and a friend. My brother and I both landed on “The Belhaven Melt” double smash burger. Our friend ordered the “Birria Tacos” with both the barbacoa brisket and smoked pulled chicken options.
On the positive side:
– They have a very interesting menu full of intriguing takes on familiar food. I don’t think there’s a single item that I don’t want to come back another day to try.
– They have a nice selection of beer on tap with a few standards like Miller Lite and Ultra and several crafts including my recent local favorite “Mississippi Queen”.
– The rib I was gifted with was really, really good. It was tender and moist with nice bark and good flavor. I’m sure they have a good house BBQ sauce but it never occurred to me to ask for any. The rib stood very well on its own.
– The smash burger was delicious. It has what they call a “tasty patty melt sauce” on it along with cheddar and grilled onions, but at the time I didn’t pay much attention to those details. All I knew was it was good and I kept taking bite after bite. That’s what really well balanced flavors does for you. Also, I expected this burger to be messy to eat but it really wasn’t. It had just the right amount of toppings in the right proportions.
– I sampled my friend’s Birria Tacos which were also delicious and easy to eat. You could bite right through without dragging out the contents or missing out on any of the carefully balanced components. The barbacoa brisket was my favorite, but maybe that was just psychological. That ‘barbacoa’ word makes my mouth water! The chicken was delicious too.
On the negative side:
A chef friend told me once that chefs do not cook, that the chef’s role is to curate the whole dining experience, which is everything from developing recipes, to training sous chefs and waitstaff, to organizing the flow of the dining room. Most of this could have been done better.
– The waitstaff were warm and friendly but felt to me to be rushed and disorganized. Even though my brother and I ordered the same dish, his came out well before mine or my friend’s meal did. This is a big no-no in my book. As southern manners dictate, he had to sit there and stare at his food until ours arrived. I hope this works itself out soon so I can give a better review down the road.
– The eating utensils are plastic and come in a cellophane pouch with a small napkin. Additional napkins are cheap, one-ply squares in a dispenser at the table. These dirt cheap products ‘cheapened’ the experience for me.
– For some reason their soft drinks are of the Pepsi product line. Why I don’t know considering Coca Cola’s ties to Mississippi. That’s a negative for me. I’m a Coke girl and I think it pairs better with most foods than Pepsi.
– All-in-all though, I’ll be back again many, many times!
