I regret that I am no longer able to recommend this neighborhood taqueria. This is especially disappointing because I’ve been coming here since it first opened 20 years ago. Consistency is a difficult thing for a restaurant to achieve, and this one no longer does so. 3 weeks ago I enjoyed my usual order, a chicken taco salad. However, since then I’ve had two additional salads that were not worth the cost, calories, or time driving round-trip from my home. A week ago the edible taco bowl in which the salad is served was stale. The components of the salad were fairly tasteless, saved only by a topping of fresh cilantro. But today’s salad was even worse. The chipotle chicken (they may have served me the plain chicken by mistake) and the pico de gallo were tasteless and they were out of cilantro. There were four people behind the counter and only two customers in the restaurant at the time. Later, I thought I should have asked whether there wasn’t someone who could drive to a nearby Topps Market to buy some fresh cilantro. In any event, my last two experiences here were very disappointing, as have been several others over the past few years. I don’t know when or if I’ll return. EARLIER REVIEWS: Actually, Boom Boom Italiano is not a new restaurant. It’s Boom Boom Mex Mex with a totally revised menu and decor. For years this neighborhood restaurant has served good Mexican food from spring to early fall and then closed for the winter. This year, the owners decided to keep their kitchen staff year-round by enticing their customers to enjoy warm Italian food during the cold season. Presumably, in the spring they’ll switch back to the Mexican menu and rebrand as Boom Boom Mex-Mex. We visited Italiano in November soon after they opened, after closing only a few weeks to redecorate the dining room and re-equip the kitchen. I ordered rigatoni with Sunday sauce and a side of sausage to eat in. The portions of sauce and pasta were generous and the side of sausage included two links. I would have preferred the food served a bit hotter as it did cool off as I ate my meal. I think the problem was that our server did not give the cooked pasta a long enough dip in hot water to reheat it before plating. Other options for sauce include marinara, vodka, and Alfredo. Other sides include meatballs, Italian beef, chicken cutlet, and eggplant. My wife decided to forego the pasta and ordered one side of meatballs and one of Italian beef. The Italian beef was outstanding. It was like slow cooked pot roast that was fork tender and rendered of its fat, except that it had the advantage of being flavored by an excellent marinara sauce. It reminded my wife of her Italian grandmother’s cooking. I also enjoyed the Italian sausage and a bite of meatball. In the future, I would probably opt for the lighter marinara with its bright tomato flavor over the more substantial Sunday sauce. For dessert, we shared a slice of pistachio cheesecake. Finally, I would add that earlier in the week, we picked up two chicken cutlets to eat at home. They were very good. So, next time I look forward to trying pasta with marinara sauce and a side of Italian beef or chicken cutlet. Note: when they changed her name to Boom Boom Italiano to reflect their Italian menu for the winter, all of my reviews of Boom Boom Mex Mex were lost. UPDATE-1: On a return visit, I ordered linguini with marinara sauce. I did like it better than the heavier Sunday sauce and the linguine heated up better than the rigatoni had on our previous visit. Once again, the Italian beef was excellent. My wife passed on the pasta and ordered a sampling of chicken, meatball, and Italian beef sides. She enjoyed all of them, but her favorites were the chicken and Italian beef. UPDATE-2: I had a small antipasto salad and chicken parm. Very nice meal. UPDATE-3: It’s summer and the restaurant is back to its Mexican menu. Enjoyed a taco salad with Chipotle chicken.

I tried this place out for the first time. I got the food to go. The food was good stayed hot. I loved the speed in which the food came out. Very friendly staff. I do think the interior needs an upgrade it feels the same as when it was Mex Mex. I would definitely go back again.

I dont want To be harsh because I love the concept and hope it improves over time. We’ll start with the positives it’s quick service and easy to order. We got the rigatoni with Sunday sauce with meatballs, and chicken parm, small antipasto salad and chicken Alfredo over linguini. One thing I suggest is they wait to heat the pasta because while waiting for the cheese to melt on the cutlet, our food got cold. I would recommend adding a little more flavor to the sauces especially the Alfredo or at least have garlic, basil, parsley additions. The chicken cutlets were good, the lettuce in the salad was going bad and the Italian dressing was very sour and bitter. Meatballs were decent.

I really love this place, along with the Mexican they do in the warmer seasons. The food is USUALLY very good and cooked well. So why only three stars? We went today and I got some broccoli cheddar soup and not only was it extremely watery, but it was room temperature. It’s a two minute drive from the restaurant to my house, so I doubt it cooled off in that amount of time. But yeah, otherwise, great place, worth your time in money. Maybe skip the soup as I’ve had better at gas stations.

Trying this for the first time and everything was phenomenal. I could tell from eating the meatballs in the Italian wedding soup that they were made with cheese. The vodka sauce was also delicious. Although the chicken cutlets were a little saltier than I what I’m used to, they were still tender and tasty.

This is the second time we have tried to go to this restaurant and it was closed. It is currently 5:50 and it says it closes at 7:30, doors are locked. I am sure the food is great if we could ever get in the door.
