From the moment we arrived, the atmosphere was quite disappointing. The space felt cold and uninviting, more like a basement than a warm Thai dining environment. There was very little sense of Thai character or ambiance, which immediately set the wrong tone for the evening.
The staff, however, were a highlight. Everyone was genuinely sweet, friendly, and attentive, and their service was professional throughout the meal.
Sadly, the food did not live up to the Michelin-star reputation. While it was presented decently, it lacked authentic Thai flavors and depth. The dishes missed boldness, balance, and creativity, and the taste was something we could easily find at an average Thai restaurant — or even better elsewhere — at a much lower price point. For the amount of money we paid, we expected a far more refined and memorable culinary experience.
Overall, this restaurant has strong service but needs significant improvement in atmosphere and, most importantly, food quality and authenticity to truly justify its Michelin status. With some changes, it could become a much better and more cohesive experience.
The food is amazing, the decor is nice, the staff is super polite and friendly but I feel that they are very much pushing for you to order more.
I was with a friend and we ordered the sharing starter platter as an entree and then each of us took a main course: a chicken curry & squid dish.
When the waiter took our order he said “maar twee gerechten?” (Only two dishes?)
Yes, “only” two dishes. This was more than enough food, we even took a doggy bag home.
The time before this i was there and me and my partner “only” ordered a main course each at first when the waiter came and ended up being convinced by the waiter to also order a starter.
Please respect what your guests order and do not be pushy when it comes to the order. It made the entire experience a little less amazing.
The food is real Thai. I mean it’s Thai Thai not European Thai. And all the staff were so nice. You can tell they know everything about all dishes and they can explain everything right and thats the good thing!
I love the concept of this restaurant. Sometimes when you don’t know what you wanna eat you can order random dishes to share with your friends or family which is fun.
But for us this time we knew what we wanted to eat so we ordered separate and yes all the foods were super LEKKER!
I think with the price of all dishes and the quality of the foods with a nice service it’s really worth the money.
And I can’t wait to go back to this restaurant again!
Asked for different table at entrance as my head was about 20 cm from the bar table, was denied it but 2 tables further remained inoccupied, had to make effort to understand waitress, walls not clean and interior without charm, cooks very loud
We opted for the Isaan discovery menu, warned (and intrigued) about its heat. The starters were decent—the sauces were flavorful—but the spring rolls were mostly wrapper, lacking filling. The main course included laab with grilled pork, which was delicious, and a somtam that was cloyingly sweet, lacking the usual balance of spice, sour, and umami (no dried shrimp either). We didn’t finish it and took it home. The steak was perhaps the biggest letdown: it was incredibly fatty and riddled with tendons, difficult to eat with spoon and fork. Half the portion ended up being inedible fat, as we discovered the next day.
Honestly, I’ve had better versions of laab and somtam from our regular Thai takeaway—where we can order the latter with raw crab for a more authentic flavor profile.
Our 10-year-old daughter ordered fresh spring rolls, which were bland and forgettable—no cilantro, no fresh pop of herbs. Her egg noodles were left uneaten due to how oily they were.
Dessert was the final blow. No mango sticky rice—a Thai staple we were really looking forward to. I had mango with mango sorbet, which was good, and the mango was excellent. My husband’s kaffir lime crème brûlée, however, was plain and lacked any depth of flavor (the lime leaf was decorative only). We asked if our daughter could have a scoop of vanilla ice cream with a bit of mango on the side, and they agreed kindly. But when the bill arrived 25 minutes later (after waiting while staff prioritized take-out and turnover), we were charged for two full mango desserts (€18 each) and the scoop of ice cream.
We were shocked, but paid. I returned to question the bill and was refunded €4 for the scoop, with apologies. Still, the miscommunication soured the experience—and they should have made it clear at the time of ordering that they were charging full price.
We left wondering how Boo Raan ever earned its Michelin star. We acknowledge that the team works hard, and the restaurant is clearly loved by many. But when a restaurant leans so heavily on its star to justify premium pricing, it creates sky-high expectations. What we experienced was simply not Michelin-level cooking, service, or value.
Sadly, this was a celebration that turned into a disappointment.
