3 years ago , ( last time I was in here ) I gave an entirely different rating and review

Times Have changed , and in My experience , for the worse.

I asked for my hash browns to be literally ( OLD , OLD school here ) IN Oil , Crispy on both sides , the waitress asked if I wanted them Deep dried, I said NO, no way , just like anyone would do for themselves at home , Crisp both sides , they came back DEEP DEEP Fried , and she served them to me that way, when I brought it up to her, she said that she DID state on the order how I wanted them, and took them back , meantime my main dish arrived , and I was instantly shocked for two reasons , they Now, ONLY serve meals on Side order little plates , WOW, and then , ( Worse ) the days of the Very tasty ” Homemade looking sausage patties are GONE , And I can Only imagine why , PROFIT margins, So now they serve what looked like Precooked Small little patties a little over. MAYBE 1/8 inch thick Very dry HARD hockey pucks DISGUSTING

There are Not To many left of Genuine OLD fashioned American Cafes left anymore that Still do serve up Old fashioned Genuine country quality food , but this one , again in MHO has seen it’s better days

It has really warm and comforting things to enjoy inside Bonny’s Cafe in El Cajon, California where I visited with someone. The place feels lively in a calm and familiar way that teenagers would appreciate a lot because it has that friendly neighborhood energy that makes you feel welcome the moment you walk in. I noticed right away that there were a lot of teenagers eating there, talking with each other, and enjoying their time without feeling watched or rushed. Seeing that made me realize how naturally this cafe fits into the kind of environment teenagers love, somewhere they can relax, laugh, and feel like they belong.

The food at Bonnys Cafe surprised me in the best way. It tasted exactly like the kind of comforting breakfast you hope for when you walk into a classic cafe, and it made the whole experience feel even more inviting. Even though the dishes are simple, they have that homemade flavor that teenagers would enjoy because it feels real and not overly fancy. The atmosphere inside is bright and open, and the staff treat everyone with the same kindness, which makes it easy for teenagers to feel comfortable being themselves there.

As I walked around and looked at the different tables, I did not realize how much there was to appreciate about the place until I took a moment to really take it in. It is the kind of cafe where you can sit for a while without feeling like you need to hurry up and leave. I really appreciated how easy it was to enjoy my time there without any pressure. I never doubted that the experience was going to turn out the way I hoped it would because everything about the cafe, from the food to the atmosphere, felt genuine and welcoming.

I only visited Bonnys Cafe one time in my life before making this review, but it left a strong impression on me. It was one of the most comfortable and inviting cafes I have been to in a long time, and I would highly recommend that teenagers go there because it gives them a place to eat good food, hang out with friends, and feel relaxed. I lived for 24 years. I am not physically or mentally 24 years old. In the summertime in the year 2024, I learned that I am still physically and mentally 18 years old. I also learned in the summer that year that my prefrontal cortex is way more developed than average 25 year olds prefrontal cortex in the human brain.

A nice Mom & Pop breakfast and lunch restaurant. We got the Reuben Omelette with breakfast potatoes and biscuits and gravy, and a Bacon BBQ burger with a salad. Everything was very tasty.

I stopped in last Saturday morning, after approx. 5 years, just to wait for a women’s fellowship event to begin next door. I decided to have a quick breakfast but sat at the counter rather than at a booth or table.

I had forgotten how nice and restful this establishment was back when I lived in El Cajon. The coffee is excellent. The food is first-rate. The service is just like you’re at home! The prices are reasonable. What more could anyone need?!?!?

Thanks to the staff for this restored memory. I am pleased that the customer service is the same after 5 years! I will definitely return soon with friends now that I’ve moved back to El Cajon! #LifeIsGood ✔️ ❣️

WHAT IS BONNY’S CAFE?
A homestlye diner with oldies nostalgia and background music with a plethora of good homecoming meal choices from breakfast omelettes to pork chop dinners.

Closes at 2 PM. I arrived on a Saturday at 1245 PM and was not rushed. I had immediate seating. When I came at 10AM there was a 2 minute wait.

WHAT MEAL DO YOU SUGGEST?
The food is just plain delicious. I used to eat here every week for 10 years when I lived in El Cajon. I stopped by after completing the Iron Mountain Hike.

I only order the Popeye Omelette with a pancake and hash browns. Gosh this food is so good. The hash browns are crisp on the outside and soft in the inside with a slight buttery flavor. So good, no ketchup needed.  And when I bring friends their feedback is similar with their meal choices. It’s good.

WHAT IS THE ATMOSPHERE?
Diner style table service with the option of counter seating. Waitpersons assist each other without the side-eye :). Prices are reasonable at $13-16 per plate. Kid and senior menu available. Wheelchair and scooter friendly accessibility. Indoor seating with limited outdoor seating.

“I love oldies just kind of sweet, slinky, Fifties music. The slow stuff. And Billie Holiday.”

The restaurant is located off of Broadway and there is easy access to the parking lot. Parking is on the west side of the building.

Upon entry we were greeted by a friendly staff and fabulous fifties atmosphere. Great oldies were playing a the red and checkered decor.

We sat in a comfortable booth and were quickly greeted by our server. She was kind and had a great smile. Unfortunately I didn’t make note of her name. Our drinks were delivered quickly and she was patient with us while we perused the menu. I appreciated that she kept our cups full with refills.

The menu is limited, but it is a good variety of options. We were a little disappointed that some of the items from older menu photos were no longer available. The prices are a bit on the higher side, but it is to be expected with the increase in the cost of their supplies.

We ordered the French Toast with a side of bacon and the Chicken Fried Steak and eggs with hashbrowns and a side of biscuits and gravy.

The French Toast was a large portion of fluffy thick toast. It was served with butter, syrup, and powdered sugar. It was DELICIOUS! The side of bacon was cooked crispy and had great flavor. I HIGHLY recommend this breakfast.

Unfortunately the review of the Chicken Fried Steak platter isn’t as good. The steak was a good size for breakfast. I was glad I asked for the gravy on the side, it turned out i did not care for the taste. The gravy was a bit bland and the chunks of meat in the gravy was not good. The scrambled eggs were cooked just right and were fresh and fluffy. The hashbrowns were extremely greasy and smashed into a thin serving. The hashbrowns tasted as though an old oil was used to cook them. The biscuits and gravy, also left something to be desired.

While I didn’t enjoy my breakfast as much as my companion, I will come back to try something else on their menu.

This is the classic “homestyle” diner; better than IHOP or Dennys.
The food was fresh; good quality and tasted well, came out very quickly as well. It a bit on the pricy side, however the portions are HIGE.
Service was splendid, quick and prompt.
Everything was clean and spotless.

Rather drive here 15 mins away and enjoy better quality food than go to any commercial chain restaurant.

I was looking for a new venue for breakfast and found one. I had the omelette with polish sausage with pancakes. My wife had the avocado omelette with biscuits and gravy. The omelettes were loaded with ingredients and had great flavor. The pancakes which were light and not too fluffy. A great local find and definitely worth visiting again.

I had breakfast there, the food was pretty good. I had the corned beef hash and eggs with biscuits and gravy. Fair diner food, but I loved the family run vibes of the place. The serving staff was incredibly kind and attentive. There was a small hiccup with my order that made it take a little longer than usual, but it wasnt a big deal.
