A real gem on the upper east side. The food is excellent – while we didn’t eat this trip we’ve had the schnitzel in the past. The beers are special – czechvar is a very special, hard to find lager that only select bars will get. Glasses are cleaned and served in the authentic Czech style – via Lukr pour and washed by hand, to ensure the temperature is not too hot to warm the beer and there is no soap residue. The staff is friendly, kind, inviting. This is an incredible place to eat and drink and we’re so lucky it’s right here in Manhattan!

We heard about this restaurant on social media and had it saved on our to go list for a while. We had never had Czech food and they’re the only Czech restaurant in Manhattan. So, we finally decided to take the 1 hour trip and try it out for our date night.
Staff was helpful, warm, and friendly. They answered all our questions and made sure we felt confident about everything. Restaurant itself was clean and inviting, the bathrooms were kept up and everything was good.

We ordered the goulash, jagershnitzel, sviekova, a Czech beer, and fruit pudding for dessert. Unfortunately, both of us got pretty sick by the next morning. I’m not sure if it’s just the cuisine itself since we’d never had it before and maybe it was heavy on our system or if something maybe wasn’t cooked properly and we didn’t catch it since we’re not familiar with the dishes. I don’t want to point any fingers, because we truelly don’t know but this ended up not being a fun experience. I tried calling the restaurant to just let them know, but the line goes to voicemail. We’re still recovering from our visit, I personally haven’t been able to leave the house because it’s been that bad. Not really the experience we were aiming for.

I’m giving this restaurant a top rating even though I barely ate anything – the person who made the reservation didn’t know I was vegetarian. Nonetheless I had a great time, as I love experiencing cuisines that I’ve never been exposed to, and this time, it was Czech food. We were a party of 7, all carnivores except for me, all drinkers except for me and my husband, and one of them is a beer connoisseur, so I learned that Pilsner, a pale lager, is the most famous Czech beer. The only option on the menu for me was a selection of salads, and I opted for one of my favorite vegetables – beetroot. Their servings are quite generous, and according to my fellow diners, the taste was impeccable. They ordered a lot of beer, and together we ordered a lot of food – salads, appetizers, mains, breads, and desserts. It’s a large space, its walls covered with photos and objects of antiquity. One can definitely go around like in a museum and learn a bit about the history of Czech immigrants in New York City. If you love hearty meat dishes, exotic flavors and great beer, this place is definitely for you!

Went for brunch for the first time this weekend and it was such a pleasant place. The food was delicious and well-seasoned. The service was warm and welcoming. Also the brunch deal is great – we will definitely be back!

What a gem tucked away off the main drag. Im hesitant to even mention them because everything about the place is fantastic. Czech beer on tap, a huge menu with tons of great food. Top options from our visit were the duck confit, red cabbage, potato pancakes, and drowned sausages. Apparently they also have brunch which also looks good. I would come back here every week until I try everything on the menu and have a beer each time!

When I stepped into Bohemian Spirit, I felt like I had been teleported straight to the Czech Republic. The interior design is spot on and really captures the atmosphere. I ordered a Pilsner and wasn’t given water, which actually made me laugh because it reminded me of Prague, where beer is cheaper than water . I also had the goulash, overall it was good, though personally I felt it could have been a little better. Still, the experience was enjoyable and worth checking out.

I recently dined at Bohemian Spirit, and it offered a thoughtful and authentic introduction to Czech cuisine on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. The restaurant presents a refined yet welcoming atmosphere that reflects both the warmth of Central European hospitality and the elegance expected in a New York dining setting. The dining room is intimate and comfortable, creating an environment that encourages guests to slow down and enjoy the meal.

Czech cuisine is known for hearty preparations built around roasted meats, dumplings, and rich sauces, and the menu here reflects those traditions well. One of the highlights of the meal was the careful preparation of classic Czech dishes that emphasize slow cooking and balanced seasoning. The meats were tender and well developed in flavor, often paired with sauces that added depth without overwhelming the dish.

Traditional accompaniments such as dumplings and cabbage-based sides added texture and structure to the plates. Czech dumplings are an essential part of the cuisine, serving as a perfect vehicle for absorbing sauces while balancing the richness of the main proteins. The dishes demonstrated an understanding of these traditional combinations, resulting in meals that felt authentic and satisfying.

Another notable aspect of the restaurant is its beverage selection. Czech cuisine is closely tied to beer culture, and the restaurant’s offerings complement the food well. Pairing traditional dishes with Czech-style beers enhances the experience and reflects the culinary heritage of the region.

Service throughout the meal was attentive and knowledgeable. Staff members were comfortable explaining menu items and providing recommendations for diners unfamiliar with Czech cuisine. Their guidance helped create a well-balanced selection of dishes for the table.

The overall atmosphere contributes strongly to the dining experience. Bohemian Spirit manages to introduce a cuisine that is relatively uncommon in New York’s dining scene while maintaining an approachable environment that welcomes both newcomers and those already familiar with Czech food.

Overall, Bohemian Spirit delivers a refined and authentic Czech dining experience with well-prepared traditional dishes, thoughtful service, and a comfortable atmosphere. It stands out as a unique culinary destination for those interested in Central European cuisine.

This is a fun place, but dinner was hit and miss. The duck confit with red cabbage was delicious, but the salmon disappointed. Service was OK at best, and it was a nice dining experience. We will probably not return, as the quality of the food was uneven. I think this might be the perfect place for a beer and a bite.

Since there’s no decent Hungarian restaurant in the city, I always appreciate other Central European cuisines. Food is great overall, some dishes can be a hit-and-miss. Czech beer on tap, slightly grumpy service (adds to the authenticity), hot goulash soup (gulyás for us) with fresh bread and I’m happy.

Amazing, very authentic food with generous portions (NJ suburbs sizes) I loved the goulash and the palachinke dessert. Worth the trip if you are looking to experience authentic European cuisine
