Bob Sykes Bar B Q is a family owned Alabama tradition since 1957. The bbq pit is the first thing you see when entering. Barbecuing fresh pork shoulders, ribs, chicken, turkey and sausage over a natural fire of hickory coals. Sides and desserts are made fresh daily including onion rings and red velvet cake. Fresh hand pattied burgers are a must try! The restaurant has received national news coverage for its lemon ice box pie and Bbq. The Travel Channel says Bob Sykes is “Not a chain, it’s just a good old fashioned joint with a pig sign and a happy man running it. 3 generations of the Sykes family have proudly served authentic southern barbecue that literally goes from the pit to the plate. If you’re in the Birmingham area and want and understand what real BBQ is, you will have to hit Bob Sykes. The moment you walk in you are greeted by a monstrous BBQ pit full of meat and an old school aesthetic. Well, calling it an esthetic is a bit of an insult, it IS old school, the aesthetic as just a byproduct.

Good food. Huge portions! This was our first time here. I got the catfish plate and my husband got the ribs plate. Both were really good. The catfish could have been a little spicier. It took about 15 to 20 minutes for us to get our order. After we paid for it. We will definitely be back!

This was my second visit to Bob Sykes, the first time in 2022. Just as in 2022, the food is just as I remembered! DELICIOUS!! I had the ribs which were seasoned very well, but not too much. The sauce is spot on!! The meat was tender and not dry. I also ordered fries and Cole slaw. The cole slaw for me was perfect. Not soggy, but crisp and fresh. I also liked the touch of sweetness in the slaw. My next go to item was the red velvet cake! The frosting, was fresh, topped with walnuts; the cake is spot on moist and so good! My cousin ordered the pull pork sandwich. She said it was really good with just enough sauce for her liking. She also ordered the fried okra. She said is was fresh, hot and she would order again. She also bought the red velvet… the slices are plentiful; enough for two… we both ate ours in two days. I also bought the Carmel cake for my husband… he devoured it!! I highly recommend Bob Sykes! The staff was friendly and the atmosphere is good. The restaurant was clean. Don’t come to Birmingham / Bessemer without stoping here!

The food was really good except the fries which were cold and soggy. Had pulled pork to go. No sauce was included. They were out of everything else. Out of wings, chicken, and ribs. Homemade pies and cakes. Husband really enjoyed the red velvet cake and said the coleslaw was quite good. Only a few tables for dining in.

So so so very good!!!! This place has perfected the art of BBQ! We need one in Huntsville Alabama!! I’m a Chicago native so I’m a natural foodie and I stand by our cities diverse palate, but Bob Sykes would take over in Chicago!!! Every succulent bite of that chicken was like heaven in my mouth. The mac n cheese tasted like my grandma cooked it!!!

I went there a couple yrs after they opened, ’60’s maybe & it was amazing!!!! The coconut pie was awesome & meringue was perfect…just went again and its not as good as I remember it but it was still good. Meringue needs work.
