I hadn’t been to a Bob Evans in quite some time. We were in the mood for home-cookin’ comfort food that I didn’t have to cook. I had heard Bob Evans had a new menu so we decided to try it.
I started with chicken noodle soup, which was very good. It was overloaded with thick, seeming-homemade noodles, but I would have appreciated less noodles and more broth, which was almost non-existent, as if cooking away all day. Still, great flavor. My husband chose beef vegetable soup, which he enjoyed a lot.
The menu looked very good. My husband had the chopped steak and mashed potato dinner which was very good. I didn’t know what I wanted, but saw their “trio” dinner. It had turkey with stuffing, cranberry relish, ham steaks, and mashed potatoes with pot roast/gravy and carrots. I was in. To be honest, it seemed like an odd combination of entrées, but was a good way to try different meals.
The pot roast was very tasty, extremely tender, and the gravy over the potatoes was good. The carrots were cooked well, not hard or mushy, and the mashed potatoes were homemade. This part of the meal was, by far, the best on the plate.
The ham steaks were “ok”, a little salty, nothing special.
The turkey was a bit dry, not that tender slow-roasted entrée in the ad. Again, nothing special. The stuffing was the usual one can find in any restaurant. Actually, the entire turkey dinner portion was a bit disappointing.
Overall, this entrée was a strange combination of foods to serve together, and was a bit over the top in amount. More doesn’t necessarily mean better…
My husband chose peanut butter pie for dessert. And OH MY GOODNESS! I normally don’t like cream pies, but this was so exceptional, I will be buying a whole one. It was rich without being too sweet , with a strong peanut butter flavor. The crumbles on top may have been peanut butter cups and added a lot to the overall dish, which was so creamy and good.
Our waitress, Madison, was very nice, very efficient, and had a good sense of timing regarding when to bring the next course and the bill. Much appreciation.
Overall, mixed reviews, and some expectations dashed; but we will definitely try Bob Evans again. Still a good place to go for a comparatively less expensive daily meal
Heather, is professional and friendly, which is two of the top things that I look for. The fries are actually hot. The double stack cheeseburger is also pretty hot.
