They had a large variety of options to choose from on the menu. They also offered a great and surprisingly extensive Happy Hour Menu which we got there in time to take advantage of.
We got the burger and thought it was very tasty, we love a good caramelized onion. I thought it definitely needed some ketchup to balance out the heaviness of the onions and cheese with a little bright acidity. I also thought the patties themselves were very good, thin with a slight crisp to them with a soft bun and melty sauces and cheese. Since it was a happy hour option the burger did not come with any sides like it would have as an entrée.
We also got fish tacos and we were a big fan of the slaw and pineapple mayo which brought a balance of sweet and savory to the dish. Only came with two tacos (at least for happy hour) which might not be enough food if you’re hungry.
The hot smoked salmon was one of the more unique items we tried. The salmon itself was super tasty – salty and smoky just what you want. They use the smaller scraps of salmon that wouldn’t work in their Wood-Fired King Salmon entrée and incorporate it into this appetizer which is great sustainability-wise! The salmon came with a creamy ricotta, salty capers, crunchy crostini, and sweet and acidic pickled red onions. We liked this combination a lot but felt it could have used even more sweetness/acidity, maybe just adding a couple more onions to the dish.
We really enjoyed the ‘Garganelli’ pasta dish. It was creamy and indulgent with pieces of lobster and freshly shaved parmesan on top. The chili added a really nice layer of heat but wasn’t overpowering. The server was nice enough to split up everything we had over the evening to share (which explains the two small portions in the photo).
MN Mule – 8/10
Pretty average but solid mule. However, it was served in a plastic spam cup which elevated the whole experience.
Margarita – 9/10
Very good margarita – we were told it was a house made margarita not from a mix. Very bright and fresh flavors that definitely let the tequila shine.
Overall would definitely recommend!
My only little issue is that the Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich… was not hot! Maybe add a little something to it.
Best part about this place is that they have Hamms on tap!
We were a bit disappointed and surprised that they don’t have a gluten free bun/bread option.
Boardwalk Kitchen has a great location right on the Canterbury racetrack, it’s a fun spot for a drink, but both visits left me disappointed when it came to food and service.
On my first visit, the steak frites were overcooked and bland, Brussels sprouts were soggy and oily instead of crisp, the focaccia was dry and flavorless, and the watermelon salad was just fine, nothing memorable but heavy on the watermelon. Drinks were decent, with the hot honey margarita being the best, though still not standout. Service was slow, and our server was rarely around.
Unfortunately, my second visit was even worse. Service was again painfully slow, and staff communication was chaotic, three different people gave conflicting answers about where we could sit. Getting even a drink took forever. I gave the steak another chance, but it came out practically raw in the middle while burnt black on the outside. The ricotta gnocchi was edible but dull, oddly served with a pile of lettuce mixed in.
Overall, the location and bar make it worth stopping for a casual drink with a view, but I wouldn’t recommend it for dinner.
We ordered the focaccia bread, buffalo cauliflower and crab cake to share. We asked for a side of butter which made the focaccia dish for us! The cauliflower was flash friend with buffalo and a side of ranch and was a 10/10 dish for us! We were split on the crab cake, it was moist, generously sized but a little on the fishy side if sensitive to that! I love seafood so did not find it an issue.
The service was a little slow, we were left without drinks at times but could see them at the bar, took while to close the tab etc but I suspect it was due to an unexpectedly busy night with the rainy weather. Would not deter us from coming back very soon to check it out with hopefully nicer patio weather!
Side note that we saw a happy hour menu at the bar, which ends at 6pm on weeknights and is definitely worth a visit! Great drink and apps on happy hour so excited to come back for that, too!
