Pleasant vibes inside. I don’t mean this as an insult at all but I was expecting more ethnic decor in line with the restaurant’s menu – instead, it’s pretty Americanized and feels like a classic suburban NJ establishment. I liked the painted brick on the lefthand side that has Blue Spice’s logo/sign on it; spiffy. The bathroom was also a high point, which is…not something I say often. It was very clean and smelled nice, and I liked the dark cruise-ship lighting vibe.
We decided to split the scallion pancake app, which was an excellent decision. I work in the city and regularly have this item from a place in Chinatown, and I honestly thought this was better, mostly because it was thicker/denser than what I’m used to. Super tasty and would get that again in a heartbeat. Giant portion as well – we split the pancake, which was roughly the size of a small pizza. My chum had leftovers there, I did not; so it goes with us.
I’ve had a few mediocre chicken katsu experiences of late, so this seemed like a chance for redemption. I ordered the Akiko Curry entree, which was their spin on chicken katsu curry. Honestly wasn’t my favorite. Again, a HUGE portion here and was only able to finish about 60% of it despite having a pretty legit appetite coming in. And the presentation value is excellent as well, as far as that goes. This could easily just be a personal palate preference, but I wasn’t crazy about the curry itself (which had a weird tang to it) and didn’t resemble the standard curry I’m used to with this dish. Also, as you can see from the attached, the curry is basically on the side of the dish, separated from the chicken and rice. Because of that, the chicken is on the dry side, which is my primary beef (pun?) with the item to begin with. So a miss for me, but I could see why other people would like this (and apparently do).
The service was excellent, full stop. Our waitress was very nice and personable; she had strong command of the menu and you could see her consistently engaging with other patrons throughout our meal as well. She took several group photos so this is apparently a Kingdom of Sussex hot spot for that, which I wouldn’t have guessed. She was so good both of us remarked on it multiple times during the meal, which is a rarity. But a great example of hospitality markedly improving an experience and making what was already an overall positive situation that much better. Huge marks there.
Would definitely come back but would explore other parts of the menu once I feasted on the scallion pancake.
From the moment we walked in, we were met with blatant hostility. The waitress at the front didn’t just lack “service spirit”—she was actively rude. Despite the dining room being half-empty with numerous tables clearly open and available, she flatly told us there would be a one-hour wait.
When I politely pointed out that we were a party of three (including a small child) and offered to simply squeeze into a two-top table to make it easier for them, her response was shocking. Instead of a professional “no,” she became extremely sarcastic and condescending, mocking our suggestion in front of other guests. It was humiliating and entirely unprovoked.
To the Owner: You are losing consistent, weekly revenue because of this individual. Her attitude is a liability to your business. If you value your restaurant’s reputation, you need to seriously reconsider her employment.
There are plenty of other places in the area that actually value their customers and understand basic hospitality. Do yourself a favor and skip this place—the “wait” isn’t because they’re busy; it’s because they clearly don’t want your business.
We ordered the kimchi fried rice with pork, curry chicken, a beef-and-rice main dish, beef noodles, and the homemade dumplings. While everything seemed fresh, the food was unfortunately very bland and lacking flavor across the board. The only standout was the mango bubble tea, which my son loved.
We were also disappointed by the BYOB policy for adults, which felt inconvenient. The restaurant itself is very quiet, with no music, though it does have a bit of charm in its decor.
Another downside was the pricing—quite high for this type of food and for the location. On top of that, when we asked for plastic containers to pack up our leftovers (one dish was already packed that way), we were firmly refused twice and told only aluminum containers were allowed per the owner’s instructions. We even offered to pay for plastic containers since we barely ate and needed larger ones, but the request was still rejected.
What was most disappointing was the service at the end. The waitress had been sweet initially and helpful with menu suggestions, but when we were leaving, she seemed visibly annoyed by our container request and didn’t even say thank you.
Overall, after overpaying for food that lacked flavor and experiencing unfriendly service over a simple request, we would not recommend this restaurant and won’t be returning.
The instant you step inside friendly smiles and a heartfelt greeting immediately create a comforting and home-like atmosphere. This is due to the great server and staff, they are attentive without hovering, knowledgeable about the menu and incredibly kind.
When I saw the one-star review that was left yesterday by Aili Chen, the very afternoon I visited with my family I was immediately puzzled. I have visited this restaurant with friends and family from PA, NJ and NY and we all agree, everyone that works at Blue Spice is wonderful, professional and very friendly. Our experience with the staff with or without a reservation has ALWAYS been a positive one.
The food is consistently delicious, bursting with flavor and clearly prepared with care and the staff welcomes you like family and ensures you have a great dining experience. Yes, we happily and regularly come from another state to eat here and will continue to do so.
Our server was an absolute delight! We truly had the best 5 start experience because of her. She wonderfully explained the history and origins of the meals.
The minus of the star was due to lack of salt in some of our dishes. The charred pork was marinated well amongst other dishes but the chicken katsu and curry was a little flavorless without salt. Otherwise everything else was perfect! I would surly go back to try other food!
10/10 recommend the pear cinnamon tea! It was absolutely delish!
PS don’t forget their sister store a French and Asian inspired cafe & bakery! Totally recommend stopping there for a pick me up coffee and dessert!
