Came in about 40 minutes before closing to see if I could grab some quick nigiri and sashimi and wasn’t disappointed. Usually places will turn you away if you come in close to closing, but for a single guest they had no issue serving me. The fish was fresh and well prepared and the staff were all welcoming and friendly. I’m not often out this way but next time I am I will hopefully be in the mood to hit Blue Ocean up once more!

Loved the lunch bento options. The tempura in particular was really delicious – light batter made it crispy and not overly greasy. The seaweed salad dressed in sesame oil was also good.
The miso ramen was just okay. We thought it was kind of bland might just be a matter of personal preference though.

The best place to get authentic Japanese food in Northern Virginia. I love this place, I come here all the time and have never left disappointed. Food is great and priced fairly. I recommend Lunch Box B with salmon. You get a free side of Miso soup and salad. The staff are very friendly and attentive. This is my go to place for lunch

First time at Blue Ocean, and I was shocked to see four Japanese chefs in the kitchen, which is super rare around here. This place is amazing! It’s like going to a friend’s house for a home-cooked meal. I got the teishoku, hard to find unless you go all the way to DC. I loved every single bite, and I can’t wait to try their kamameshi!

As soon as we stepped inside, we were instantly immersed in a Japanese atmosphere. The aesthetic was remarkably authentic, and the service and ambiance were exceptional. Although the ramen was somewhat a meh, I’m eager to try it again with their sushi or other dishes to give them another chance. Hehe.

Ordered the sashimi appetizer, deluxe sushi entree, and the blue ocean ramen. Courses arrived in reverse, with the ramen first and sashimi last. Not the best sushi or ramen I’ve had but it got the job done. Total came to $70 plus with tip included.

I’ve visited Blue Ocean more than 20 times, and what I appreciate the most is how consistent the food and service are. The quality of the fish is always excellent, especially the mackerel (saba), which is my favorite. Out of all the saba I’ve ever had, this one ranks at the top. My recent visit was just as great as always.
The only downside is that the interior feels quite outdated. It’s a bit cramped and could use a refresh, but that’s certainly not a reason to stop coming. I just hope they continue to serve the same high-quality food for years to come.
Thank you, Blue Ocean!

Had an excellent experience at Blue Ocean! This is the most authentic Japanese izakaya that I have been to in a long time. The food is fresh, plentiful, the aunties are so helpful, and the prices are outstanding for the quality and portion of food. I do recommend calling ahead and getting a reservation. They are a smaller eatery with limited seating. There are a few different menus. Some items require you to call ahead and order, I’m guess to acquire fresh ingredients. I will definitely be going again soon to try their okonomiyaki and other items from their menus. Absolutely outstanding!

WIFE ALMOST WENT TO THE ER today after eating their sushi because THERE WAS A 2-INCH BONE in the nigiri sushi.
I did take-out order of Chef’s sushi special and the moment my wife ate the first nigiri sushi, something poked deep inside her throat and she was coughing blood. What came out of her mouth was SHOCKING. It was a 2-inch sharp BONE. I immediately called the restaurant and let them know. I told them we longer felt safe to eat their food and wanted a refund which was the least the restaurant should offer along with an apology. Not only did they not offer us an apology but refused to give full refund and only partial. I brought up the fact that this is food safety hazard and that I can literally sue the restaurant for this reason and it was only then they “accepted” to give full refund. I’ve been to this restaurant several times and have enjoyed the place like many others. After today’s SERIOUS incident, I’m never going back and I warn others to be careful just like I “kindly” let them know to handle their ingredients carefully for other customers.
She’s currently still bleeding and we might have to end up in the ER if this continues.
They should have first asked if she’s okay when we called and they were only discussing how much refund they can give over the phone. I’m extremely disappointed and shocked at their response.

I’ve went to Blue Ocean countless times in the past few years. It is my childhood spot. The food is delicious, but regrettably, the quality has gone down from pre-COVID. They got rid of the salad bar and now we get only a tiny side of salad. The shrimp tempura is not as crispy, and there were times when the tempura seemed not fresh. I think it’s a bit over-priced. I hope Blue Ocean will bring back its glory days!
