Blossoms – Soul Food in New York City, Brooklyn
Reviews
We came in and sat down and the server was quite friendly and recommended us some dishes so we tried them. The collard greens were a miss for me. They came out by themselves five minutes before the rest of the food came out, in a small aluminum pot, which is a cute presentation, but aluminum doesn’t hold heat very well, and is also known to leach into foods that are very acidic, which collard greens can be. They were a bit bland, perhaps they weren’t cooked with meat for the vegetarians but there are alternative ways to get that pot-liquor flavor in there.
The fried chicken was quite tasty, nice and homestyle, but just slightly greasy. For the price there should be atleast one more piece of chicken on that plate too.
The ribs were also very yummy but not the most tender. I think they were just baked ribs smothered in store-bought barbecue sauce
The Mac and cheese was nice and the potato salad and yams were also very much on point.
The presentation of the plates however leaves very much to be desired. Perhaps it was the lighting but the plates we received looked almost as if the food had just been slopped on them and ran out to us. You can see the photos below.
All in all it is a good experience and this is one of the better soul food spots in Brooklyn but it’s not at the top of my list for reasons given.
I want to start off by saying this restaurant has exceeded my expectations. The photos do not do it any justice what so ever. The history, the warmth, the familial presence that comes from the decor is absolutely beautiful. And the TV playing Martin while playing Usher in the background truly sets the tone. I’ve seen other restaurants try to do it like this and it does not hit the same at all.
Now the drinks are not only beautiful but delicious, I honestly appreciate the authenticity of the sangria. It’s a real Sangria with dry red wine and it not too bitter or too sweet, it’s perfect. The Mimosa’s also perfectly balanced with the orange juice and champagne, and if you get Bottomless you definitely get your money’s worth. The waitresses will keep em coming even after you feel the buzz (LOVE THAT 10/10). Last but not least, the fooddddd! Amazinggg! The Bacon, Egg and Cheese biscuit was soft, hot, and well seasoned. Bacon was cooked perfectly, eggs were fluffy and it had the perfect amount of cheese, even sprinkled some on top of the biscuit. The pancakes were sweet and filling, you can taste the cinnamon and nutmeg (it was a bit much for me but I cleaned the plate). But the star of the show was the Fish, Shrimp & Gritsssss! My God the crisp on that fish batter was enough to make me tear up. And then with the hot sauce and tarter sauce, I was in heaven. Also the Shrimp were Tiger Shrimp hunny, not no tiny frozen shrimp in a bag. I can respect a restaurant cares just as much for a vibe/aesthetic as they do quality food and good service. And here you get both! 10/10 would highly recommend…the vibe, the staff and the food are amazing and well worth the visit. I’ll definitely be back for more.
On my second order, placed on New Year’s Eve, I ordered the same items again and once again received yams instead of collard greens without any communication. Neither my partner nor I eat yams, so they were thrown out again. However, this time the BBQ ribs were extremely tender and flavorful—the meat fell cleanly off the bone with very little effort. The connective tissue had clearly broken down properly during cooking, which only happens when ribs are cooked low and slow for the correct amount of time. Those ribs were the standout of the plate, and because of that experience, my partner encouraged me to order again.
Unfortunately, today’s order was the complete opposite. The ribs were extremely tough—so tough that they were difficult to cut, pull apart, or chew. From a cooking standpoint, this usually happens when ribs are rushed or cooked at too high a temperature. When collagen and connective tissue are not given enough time to slowly convert into gelatin, the muscle fibers tighten instead of relax, resulting in meat that is dry, dense, and rubbery rather than tender. Instead of cleanly separating from the bone, the meat clung tightly and required excessive force to tear apart, which is a clear sign of undercooked or improperly cooked ribs.
I ordered BBQ ribs and mac and cheese for myself and my partner, and ribs with rice for my son, and I specifically requested green beans instead of collard greens to ensure we received green vegetables. Despite this, only two rib orders were sent instead of three, and the two we did receive were inedible for a child. I spent my last money on this order when I honestly should have cooked at home, which made the experience even more frustrating. After sharing my ribs with my son, he struggled to chew them, confirming that the texture issue was not subjective but structural.
There is clear potential here, as I have experienced moments where the food was genuinely good. However, repeated substitutions without communication, missing items, and especially the drastic inconsistency in rib preparation have left me disappointed. Based on effort alone, I would rate this experience 2 stars, but consistency, quality control, and customer communication need serious improvement.
This will definitely be my go to spot when I need a drink and don’t feel like cooking.
Immediately when we walked in (around 4pm on 11/8) the vibe was off, we were pressured to order our food quickly and when we were hesitant about ordering something, our server just kept saying “okay next, what else?”. This was red flag #1.
We ordered drinks, but only 2 of them came out (there were 3 of us). We had to wait 10 minutes for the last drink to arrive. Red flag #2, but I really wanted to try their food so we waited.
Now red flag #3 + 4 are the worst. When the food starts arriving, I got mine (fish and grits) and then we had to wait 10 minutes for my friend to get hers (fried chicken Mac and cheese). My boyfriend ordered the red snapper and, not even kidding, it arrived a whole 30 minutes after my food had originally hit the table. We were all confused and kept looking at the waitress and all she said was “oh the snapper is really big that’s why it’s taking so long.” Now listen, I have worked in a restaurant before, I know some things are out of your control but this was absolutely unacceptable. If one meal takes significantly longer than others, that’s what you cook first and don’t start the other items until the right time so they all arrive together.
Red flag #4 was the food itself. I really really wanted to like it after all I had been through, but it just wasn’t good. The fried fish I had tasted like it was fried days ago and just dropped in the fryer to warm it up 🙁 the oxtail empanadas were essentially beef stew inside of an empanada shell.
Bonus red flag: I asked the waitress to split the bill for us and she went behind the bar to do so, but not without letting out a scream bc she was annoyed with us. Like what is going on fr??
I really wanted to like this place, but I will never go back again
The service from Quay ….mwahhhh
I only wish the place was a bit bigger because I saw persons waiting to be sat (not for too long though). Besides that, fantastic place.
