Reviews
Friendly staff, great food, good layout which encourages conversation – we really enjoyed it. Pork knuckle for me and my mate had a schnitzel – both impressive. Oh, and good beer!
The Meal: Pork Knuckle (Schweinshaxe)
The pork knuckle was the star of the show. It arrived perfectly prepared:
• Skin/Crackling: The exterior skin was incredibly crispy and perfectly rendered, shattering beautifully on the fork. This is the mark of a well-executed Haxe.
• Meat: The meat underneath was fall-off-the-bone tender, moist, and flavorful. The portion size was generous, as expected from a proper Brauhaus.
• Sides: Paired perfectly with the traditional sides (like potato dumplings or sauerkraut), cutting through the richness of the pork.
Atmosphere & Service
Blockbräu’s setting directly at the Landungsbrücken is unbeatable, offering a wonderful view of the harbor—especially from the rooftop terrace.
• Vibe: The overall vibe is exactly what you want from a German brewery: rustic, lively, and often accompanied by music. It’s a great place to soak up the energy of the city.
• Beer: The house-brewed beer (I tried the Helles) was fresh, excellent, and the ideal complement to the rich food.
Verdict
For anyone seeking an authentic, hearty German meal in a stunning location, Blockbräu is highly recommended. The atmosphere is boisterous, but the excellent food and great house beer are worth it. If you’re a fan of traditional dishes, the pork knuckle is a must-try.
The location is simply stunning – right by the water, with a wonderful view of the harbor and the passing ships. Especially on a nice day, the view is a real highlight.
The service was very friendly and attentive. The food was freshly prepared, beautifully presented, and tasted excellent.
Overall, a thoroughly enjoyable experience – highly recommended!
Sat at the biertische and ordered a schnitzel. It was crisp, golden and exactly what it should be. The Munich-style Weißbier was lovely, and service was on point despite the lunchtime rush.
Big windows, open space, and a steady stream of seagulls circling the ferry terminals outside. A solid spot if you enjoy your beer with a view (and a hint of diesel in the breeze).
Would 100% return. Possibly just for the schnitzel.
Edit:
I sat in the establishment, having a few beers, and eventually decided to also have the 700g Schweinshaxe, and it did not dissapoint.
This is a meal for Kings and probably what I should have gone with in the first place. But I was just dying for a Schnitzel so I ordered that without looking at the menu.
If I return here before I leave Hamburg I’m gonna try the Kalbsbratwurst at €20
If you like classic German “gasthauses” and “brauhauses” you definitely have to visit this place.
This was one of the most joyfull places we went to.
