FOLLOW-UP: I am updating this review to note that I followed the owner’s instructions and emailed their support team twice at the address provided to me below by the business. Unfortunately, I have yet to receive a reply. It feels a bit like a “canned” response to look good publicly without actually intending to resolve the issue. If you aren’t going to reply to the emails you request, it makes the initial offer to “make things right” feel insincere

My love affair with BBQ has blossomed into a full-blown obsession in recent years; it is now the very first genre of food I hunt down in any new city. But beyond the meat, I live by a strict code: I harbor a fervent, almost religious anti-chain sentiment when I travel. In my book, flying far from home only to lunch at the same soulless franchise you can find in your own backyard is nothing short of a cardinal sin. For better or for worse, you must open yourself up to the authentic soul of a local establishment. So, while stranded in the Loop with a spare hour, battling the biting, bone-chilling wind, I refused to settle for the familiar. When I stumbled upon this independent smokehouse, it felt like finding a smoky oasis in a frozen urban desert—my spirits instantly soared.

My heart was set on one thing: burnt ends. After a transcendental experience with that “meat candy” in Aurora, CO, I was craving that specific, fatty, caramelized bliss. I walked in vibrating with excitement, only to be met with a crushing reality check. Despite arriving at high noon—the absolute prime time for lunch—I was told they simply didn’t have any to serve. Not that they had sold out (which I could respect), but that they just… didn’t have them. For a BBQ joint to miss the mark on such a staple at 12:00 PM was a baffling and profound disappointment.

Flustered and pressed for time, I pivoted to the chicken. It was, in a word, lackluster. Completely uninspired. It lacked the depth and soul of the BBQ chicken I’d devoured in Newark weeks prior, which had been juicy and explosive with flavor. This bird was forgettable at best, leaving me filled with nothing but culinary regret. I can only hope that next time around I would be lucky enough to finally find some burnt ends and write a rave commendation in place of this sour review.

However, amidst the wreckage of my expectations, there was one glorious savior: the cornbread. It was a revelation—arriving piping hot, structurally perfect, and tasting like a buttery, golden cloud of comfort. It was the only thing that kept me from walking out entirely disheartened. The cornbread alone is enough to make me consider a return trip—perhaps next time the BBQ gods will smile upon me!

Blackwood BBQ on Adams (211 W. Adams, Chicago) delivers a strong brisket sandwich: their pasture-raised, hand-trimmed brisket is smoked up to 15 hours and piled high on a buttered brioche bun. Pair it with the Kansas City spicy sauce (a house sauce that adds a good kick) and the combo becomes a standout. Plus, sides like housemade pickles, apple coleslaw, mac & cheese, or baked beans help round out a satisfying meal.

First off, customer service outstanding. Greeted by the friendliest staff, have a guest with me from the U.K. had a bit of trouble with her accent and comped our entire meal.
2nd. Everything we had was fire!!!! Brisket amazing, beans phenomenal, and pulled pork next level. Highly recommend

Great place to get pulled pork bbq in Chicago. They have other meats, but I just wanted the pulled pork. The hours are limited, but well worth a stop in. Go early, because they sell out of some items. Make sure you get the cornbread. Best I ever had. I plan to return.

I stumbled upon Blackwood BBQ by accident and I’m glad I did! I could smell the smoke from the sidewalk and I instantly knew I hit the jackpot! I grabbed a pulled pork sandwich with a side of baked beans, and chose the Chicago sweet and spicy as my sauce of choice. The pulled pork sandwich was meaty and oh so flavorful!!! I ordered an extra side of sauce just to dip my sandwich in!
I ordered my food to go but decided to sit down to take a bite of my food since I had time. The dining room was clean and not too overcrowded!

Here’s my honest review from a professional foodie:

Flavor: 10/10 no dispute there!
Portions: 7/10 I had to dock 3 points for the teeny weeny amount of sides. I mean, this is what I consider a sauce cup… (Please increase the size to a 6 oz. White Double Poly-Coated Paper Food Cup with Vented Plastic Lid)

Variety gets 7.5/10 I was also disappointed when I didn’t see any ribs, burn ends/rib tips, or smoked chicken on the menu.

Overall, I definitely will be back to try the brisket and cop another pulled pork sandwich, but I won’t be ordering any sides considering the price I paid and the portion size-I feel cheated ($14.09)

(Although the portions were small, the flavor of the beans were great).

If you’re in the mood for quality smoked flavorful meats, check them out but don’t expect quality size sides to go with your meal!

The BBQ was great! My husband and I both had a lunch special (pulled pork sandwiches with sides and a drinks) and enjoyed them greatly. Great service and nice atmosphere. Thank you!

It was my first time eating here and the beef Brisket was really tender and flavorful even without a sauce. They have really good options for sauces: I had Chicago (sweet and spicy) and Memphis (sweet). I chose the platter and it comes with a side of pickles and apple coleslaw which is really refreshing and light and compliments the meat well. The place is rustic vibe and very accessible if you work around the west loop area.

I got the tacos, one brisket and one pork, and the side of elotes.
So good, debated licking the tray to get all that tasty juices.
This is the 2nd location of Blackwood bbq I’ve had; quality holds up across locations. Blackwood bbq has yet to disappoint, can’t wait to come back.

The brisket sandwich was very good as was the Mac’n Cheese and baked beans. The staff was also extremely friendly. I see a lot of people in their reviews mention that the prices are high-ish (relative to portion of sides in particular) but, I like that with every meal purchased they provide a school lunch for food insecure children. Would definitely reccomend and come back!

TEXAN APPROVED! Without a doubt, the best BBQ in Chicago. I moved here from Texas and was dying for some great BBQ. (I actually had friends visiting from Texas bring me brisket on the plane.) There are some okay and some good BBQ places that I’ve tried in Chicago but Blackwood BBQ reminds me of home. I love just stepping in the doorway and stopping to smell. There is nothing like the smell of great BBQ. Even the sweet tea reminds me of Texas. I do wish they would make brisket and bacon breakfast tacos. The BBQ is great and the employees are super friendly too. I hope to see everyone here every Friday at lunch. If you’re visiting from out of town, come to Blackwood BBQ and you’re home.
