Our server, Shaughn, was fantastic! He was super friendly, attentive, and truly made the night even better.
The drinks were creative and delicious: Modern Fashioned, Crazy Rich Asian, Mulan Mule, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, and Kill Bill.
For appetizers, we shared the Wok-Charred Edamame, Sweet & Sour Pork Belly, Duck Lettuce Cups, and the Mangolian Brisket Bao Bun. All packed with bold, incredible flavors. We then shared the Steak Lo Mein and Chiang Mai Pad Thai, which were both outstanding and perfect for sharing.
Dessert sealed the deal with Year of the Snake and the Chocolate Blueberry Bomb. What a time! Great food, great drinks, great service, and a fantastic vibe. Highly recommend!
But let’s get down to the main topic and that is the food. We ordered the Peking duck. I’ve only been to two other places that would be comparable ,and that would be China and New York.
All side dishes and all portions are large, the duck easily serves three people, and depending on the crowd I would say easily four people.
They have an excellent happy hour, half off drinks and a great happy hour food menu.
Let’s start with the arrival: valet parking is available, but self-parking is also easy, so either way it’s convenient. We originally had a 9:00 PM reservation on Christmas Eve, and the restaurant called earlier in the day asking if we could move it to 8:45 PM due to holiday hours. We didn’t mind at all (we actually preferred eating a little earlier). We arrived around 8:40 PM, but didn’t get seated until 9:00 PM, which was the only real downside of the night.
Once inside, the experience immediately improves—Blackbird has beautiful décor and warm, inviting ambient lighting that makes it feel upscale but still comfortable. This was my second time here, and I loved the food the first time, so I came back ready to try different dishes.
We ordered General Tso’s chicken, orange chicken, and steak lo mein. For appetizers, we had fried oysters, a brisket bao bun, and a mushroom bao bun (it also had some meat in it, but I can’t remember which).
The General Tso’s was pretty good, but I personally would’ve liked a bit more heat/spice. The orange chicken was similar—good, but not mind-blowing. Honestly, both dishes tasted like what you’d expect from a solid Chinese spot (or even something like PF Chang’s). They also come with vegetables (spinach), which was a nice touch.
The brisket bao bun was really good and I’d recommend it over the mushroom bun.
The standout dishes of the night were definitely:
• The fried oysters — incredible contrast of flavors with the mango, bacon, and the oyster itself.
• The steak lo mein — the steak was cooked perfectly to medium, just how we asked.
We also had the crispy Tuna rice cakes- those were absolutely delicious
For drinks, we tried the Blackbird cocktail and the Cobra Caí, and both were delicious.
Overall: great ambiance, great service, well-priced menu, and plenty of options to come back for. Highly recommend Blackbird.
Boston’s tip to mix the house mustard sauce with the duck sauce for the egg roll was spot-on. For dessert, the coconut sundae and the blueberry bomb were both absolutely incredible.
I honestly wish I could take this restaurant back home to Wilmington, NC. An outstanding dining experience from start to finish, made even better by Boston’s warm hospitality and exceptional service
