Lodge-style eatery with an A-frame facade featuring classic German food such as goulash & schnitzel.

Oh Boy, is this a little gem. A diamond in the rough. I ate at this place at the recommendation of a relative, and was soooo delighted! The ambience was one of a kind! A big waterfall and rooms with table cloths and fine dining. The German owner treated with personal attention. Oh, and what of the food? As I said, it was as good as it gets! The potato soup was wonderfully creamy and sharp. My friends meals were equally pleasing. Prices were very reasonable. I truly am perplexed about the negative reviews here, and am thinking they must be due to the restaurant being BUSY. ( long wait, slow service, sold out of food, etc.) And why do you think the restaurant was so BUSY? huh? maybe because so many people love to eat there???

Firstly, let me say that this is the first review I have ever done, and I’m doing so to hopefully save others from having high expectations. My wife and I were looking forward to some authentic German food and went there for lunch on 7/2/2017. As both of us have German heritage, we were quite excited since we haven’t had our mom or grandmom to cook us a meal in many years. I used to live in Germany so I was especially excited. THE FOOD WAS AWFUL AND THE SERVICE LACKLUSTER! We started with store bought bread that had nothing to do with German cuisine. We had our waiters switch on us and had to wait a very long time for service. When the food finally came, the food was small portioned, bland, and seemed store bought. The one ice cream scoop of mashed potatoes were from a box, the sauerkraut from a can…the pork chop was decent sized and tender(the only bright spot!). Oh, I failed to mention that I had a salad fork to use for the main entre as well. This place has nice ambience, but is far from authentic, especially the cuisine!

Most delicious pork chop I’ve ever had. A very upscale place in the middle of a very not upscale town, quite odd. But the food was great, service was well above average.
I’d love to go there again, but it would have to be a special occasion as it was very expensive. A pork chop dinner and a small bowl of ice cream, over $40! Granted it was probably the best pork chop I ever had, but I don’t know when I’ll be able to afford it again.

Lovely meal with yummy schnitzel, spaetzle, & red cabbage cooked perfectly! Perfect creamy mushroom sauce! The German Riesling was not too sweet. The waiter was entertaining & excellent attention to every detail. The best German food I’ve had since being abroad!

I’ve spent a good amount of time traveling and working in Deutschland. This restaurant is a rip off in terms of claim to cuisine and price.
It’s a wonderful place up in the mountains. Lovely interior but it needs to fix the menu and perhaps hire new staff. We ordered the half chicken and a hamburger steak. Their online menus were completely different from what we were given on Sunday evening. The hamburger steak was delicious but the half chicken was dry as the Mojave. We had our hopes for jäger schnitzel but for $28 an entree it just wasn’t worth bothering. Overall our meal was a disappointment. I hope they eventually turn things around because it is a beautiful establishment.

The atmosphere of this restaurant is about the only thing it has going for it. We were intrigued by the large ski-lodge looking building and were pleasantly surprised to find the dining room to be sunny and spacious. That’s were the positives ended. We were told that the wait was 15 – 20 minutes; that was fine, we live in a busy area and are used to that kind of wait. About 5 minutes later, the host came back and said that he could seat us right away if we wanted to join up with another couple at a 6 seat table. We’re adventurous, we said sure and they seated us with a very nice couple. I think we waited at least 20 minutes to be noticed at all by the waiter, despite the fact that he was waiting on a table right next to us. When he finally came to the table, he was borderline surly.
Our table ordered three iced teas and a Coke. We received one iced tea and two Cokes. The food didn’t take too long, but the veggies on my plate were the frozen kind that come in a bag. The mashed potatoes tasted like the flake variety that you add hot water to. Everything on my plate was covered in a bland brown gravy. We both ordered the chicken, mine was ok, his was dry. I think the waiter only returned once to check on our table. Throughout the meal, several other wait staff, including a woman who looked like she might be the manager, puttered around the room doing meaningless tasks. I worked in restaurants and kitchens before, I’ve literally never seen a restaurant with staff just doing nothing during the busy lunch rush.
We then waited another 20 minutes after finishing our meal to receive our check. The waiter laid it down on the table and said “I’ll come back when you’re ready to pay.” My boyfriend already had his card waiting, so he tried to hand it to the waiter, but the guy just turned and walked away. Even the other couple sitting with us was disappointed.
Black Forest, your restaurant would be a great place if you made a few important changes to your menu and your staff. I hope you take all these three and lower star reviews into consideration and make some positive changes in your establishment.

Was a bit wary after reading the last few reviews on here, but we decided to take a chance and it was soooo worth it! The restaurant itself is beautiful, and the owner was so nice to us. I ordered the elk goulash and it was so good. The red cabbage was the best I’ve had of many german restaurants. All of the food was authentic, the service was beyond great, I would highly recommend visiting here!

We try to get to this place each year to pay homage to our German roots. Today was not a good day. It showed how badly this place needs a facelift of its menu and people despite their best efforts to overcome being short staffed today and not having the entire menu available to order as a result. It got to the point where they locked the front doors so no one else could come in! As for our food, it was lukewarm, late and unmemorable compared to past visits. Considering the cost, I still expect more homemade breads and more inspired sides and entrees. Otherwise this place will go the way of other German restaurants. I hope someone takes pity on this place – to update its look and safety including fixing bathrooms (and those front steps!), invigorate the staff and reenergize the menu. Then we’ll be happy to come back and make this annual trek a pleasant tradition again.

I want to start off by saying I NEVER write reviews but this place was SO horrible I feel like I have to warn others. My fiancee and I came across this place and upon first impression I thought it looked very charming. Once inside I noticed some of the decor was dated but still thought it was a neat place. The menu seemed pretty intriguing and I was excited to get to experience some traditional German food. The prices seemed steep but that is what we expected with the type of food on the menu. After we ordered we become somewhat concerned when the bread arrived. It was sliced sandwich wheat bread. I was quite disappointed. …but our disappointment was just beginning. I ordered filet of stroganoff($28). I was excited because I the description in the menu described a decadent beef mushroom and sour cream sauce. It was to be served over egg noodles with fresh sautéed veggies. When it arrived I was very disappointed. The meat looked like chopped pot roast covered in plain brown gravy. The veggies were obviously canned, and the noodles looked days old, basically flavorless and nearly dissolved when I tried to eat them. I was disgusted. I make better beef stroganoff than this place. I was thinking I was getting a steak since the meal said filet but again I was wrong. My fiancee ordered sirloin burgunion.($18) It was supposed to be a cube steak covered in a tangy Burgundy sauce with fresh sautéed onions, veggies and mashed potatoes. He basically received a hamburger patty covered with the same brown gravy. His veggies were canned as well and potatoes were instant. The portions were quite small, his potato portion was the size of a golf ball. Typically we have leftovers but not from this place. We feel like we were scammed because we were tourists. This is a day later and we both are still upset with how bad the food was and how much we paid for something so horrible. I regret not reading reviews on here before getting swindled out of $100!
