The building that houses the Black Diamond Tavern was built in 1877. It originally housed a saloon and a brothel. It later housed a bank and various town bars. Once a boom town that rose from coal mining, the town eventually turned to bust. Efforts are being made to save the town’s buildings and history. The Black Diamond Tavern is one of these efforts. We like history so enjoyed eating here. Atmosphere is five stars for me.
Our waitress was very courteous and checked on us frequently. I rated the service four stars because it took a seemingly long time to receive our food.
The food was good. Five stars. We had an appetizer of pretzel bites with cheese sauce. Very good. Our burgers were good also. We even ordered a small pizza to take home for later.
We’re beer drinkers so really enjoyed some draft beers that the Black Diamond makes in Nelsonville. It’s always nice to try local craft beers. I had a lager and an IPA. Both were good but I really liked the lager.
We would certainly go back if in the area again. My wife even bought one of their t-shirts.

This is a nice little pub. The food was reasonably priced and the service was good. The food was ok, nothing was bad, but nothing was exceptional either. The restroom situation was inconvenient, as there was one family restroom with a toilet and urinal (which was engaged a lot, though it was one patron and not the business’ fault) and one men’s room with the tiniest urinal I have ever seen which I couldn’t use instead of the family restroom because I am not that skilled at squatting over a urinal. That being said, it was very clean. I would go again, next time I think I would get pizza as one person in our party got it and it looked and smelled delicious.

My wife and I have been here a few times now.
It’s located in a small town that doesn’t have a very large population.
This tavern is pretty busy on Friday and the weekend. The food is usually pretty good here, but tonight, they messed up and fixed a deluxe pizza for my wife, which wasn’t what she ordered, and they had to remake the pizza.
The service was friendly but slow.
Overall, it will probably be a while before we stop again.

The waitress was friendly but that was the only thing good. When the food came out the fries were under cooked and three of us who had sandwiches got sick, checking the expiration dates on meat might help.

It started out fine. A nice background music, quaint and what you’d expect of a small town restaurant tavern. It didn’t last long with the bar playing loud music with explicit lyrics. You couldn’t hear each other talk. I could understand if it was past dinner, but this was prime dinner time

It took over an hour to get my order of 10 wings. With that said, there was only one person in the kitchen and one at the bar. The employees were very nice, just shorthanded. The wings were really good. I just drank beer while I waited.

Shawnee has a GEM!! In January, I had friends in from Georgia and Kentucky, for a deer hunt. I had been pumping them up with pics of BDT and the amazing bourbon selection as well as menu. My out of state buddies, as well as my great local friends from McCuneville, visited BDT on Friday night. Then Saturday night!! We received amazing service and amazing hospitality from employees, as well as the locals. Great food, great bourbon and great people. An extra shout out to out BT, Sarah Mitchell. Looking forward to our next visit.
