My husband & I drove from Orlando to Mt. Dora to celebrate our anniversary
at a well know restaurant. After having trouble with not being served, we
decided to find another place to eat. We decided we were both in the mood
for BBQ and remembered passing a billboard that advertised Black Bear
Smokehouse. We found it & thoroughly loved it.

Might not have been the usual place we would have chosen for our
anniversary, but we’re sure glad we did! The pork & brisket were awesome-
tender, moist & so flavorful. Their BBQ Sauce Bar gave us choices to pick
our favorite taste & there were plenty of choices.

So glad we found such a friendly & wonderful place to eat. The only downside
is, we don’t have one in Orlando!

As their advertising says …they’re not just cooking food but making
memories. Our thanks for a memorial afternoon that we thoroughly enjoyed!!

I love this place! the Brisket is never dried out and they have so many different kinds of BBQ sauce that there will definitely be one that you’ll love. The food is good, it’s quick, and it has a nice dining area!

**They only cook so much food for the day (good! Fresh BBQ is the best) – so if you have a craving, get there early before they sell out!**

Con: the bathrooms are never clean.

First let me say that the service was excellent! Very friendly staff. Family owned. Heartwarming story behind it. The food…stellar. Their dry rub is very tasty. The flavor of the smoke in the meat was perfect. Not undersmoked, and definitely not bitter from being oversmoked. I am from Kansas City, so I am a complete BBQ SNOB! So coming from me…this compliment means a lot ;o) I love the variety (15 to be exact) of sauces they have, numbered with descriptions of their tastes and where they originate (Kansas City, Louisiana, Memphis, etc). That’s a really cool idea. I would definitely recommend this restaurant, and wish the family nothing but the best for carrying on Bob’s dream!

I was excited to go to the Black Bear Smokehouse. I read all the articles about
the owner and his special recipe handed down. We had just passed on our home re-fi
and I thought this was a perfect time to do a test run to celebrate.

We got there around 7:30 PM. I wanted a plate of meat. Ordering is done at the
counter where they take your order, you pay for it and give you a number to put on
your seat-yourself table. I tried to order the mix n’ match pick three for $16.95.
I wanted the pulled pork, brisket and ribs. But, alas, they had already sold out
of the ribs. The server stated that they always run out by this time. I thought to
myself they needed to do better planning. 7:30 PM on a Thursday night is not roll
up the sidewalks time.

My SO ordered just the brisket. She had some trouble with a sore TMJ and she
needed a tender meat. Choosing the brisket was not a good idea. The meat was tough
and rather fatty. The taste was good and the smokiness was good, but I had trouble
cutting it with the plastic knife. I tried just pulling it apart and that was
worse. It could have used a few more hours in the oven. On a scale of 10, I’d give
it a 5.

The pulled pork, on the other hand was delicious. It was tender and flavorful.
Just the right amount of lean to fat ration and the fat was not gristly like the
brisket. I’d give it a 9 out of 10. The sides I ordered were french fries and
collard greens. They were OK. A litle pepper sauce (on the table) worked great
with the greens. My SO had fries and the macaroni . She like the mac and cheese
and the fries too.

A note about the sauces. They had 15 different sauces. Number 15, the Kentucky sauces seem to be at all the tables. It was sweet and just a little heat. I liked it the best. They have all the other sauces at a center island where you put it into little cups. The problem is that when you get back to the table, you can’t remember which sauce was which. They need to have a marker pen at the island so you can mark the number on the container.

Overall, we were disappointed. It was an OK experience, but it did not meet our
expectations. We’ll give it another chance and try for the ribs, but I think the
Black Bear Smokehouse needs some tweaking with the cooking process.

The food at Black Bear Smokehouse is amazing! The story behind their opening is incredible! In their first week, they have sold out every night because word is getting out! They are in their first week of operation and so they will figure out ordering for future. Best of all is that they have already been a presence in the community even before they were opening by helping out at events! Anyone that hasn’t been there should definitely go! My favorites are the Brisket sandwich (The Big Sexy is awesome as well), the best side is their Spoon Bread, the best sauce is number 9 (how cool is it that they have a sauce bar…I’m pumped about that), I’m real happy they have Cherry Pepsi, the ice is crushed and it’s the fancy kind, the place looks incredible, the staff is friendly. It reminds me of a Chipotle in the way that it is set up…even if there is long lines, it moves quick, there is a menu that doesn’t have 1000 things on it, it’s simple, but great, registers are iPads and user-friendly . Everything was well thought out and the reason they are selling out is because the demand is so great! Keep up the great work!

Not a good experience!
My wife, myself and a friend visited the new location in Ocala we were greeted by a gentleman that welcomed us to Black Bear Smokehouse restaurant. Right off the bat he started flirting with our friend and asked permission to flirt with my wife. He then proceeded his poor attempt of trying to guess what type of perfume she was wearing. Not a good start!
We were told to wait in one of two lines and our order would be taken at the counter. Both lines were in the area where you would go up and choose your BBQ sauce. After the food was delivered, you couldn’t get to the BBQ sauces due to the large amount of customers standing in line to place their orders. We ordered BBQ sandwiches, 2 sides and drinks. The BBQ was dry, over cooked and too smokey.

This has turned into a regular stop for us. I’m a die hard fan of the pulled pork sandwich. Black Bear delivers a terrific one every time. With something like 20 BBQ sauces at the sauce bar you can make it the regional Carolina style, do Tennessee style or even jerk style. This place to me, makes the definitive pulled pork sandwich. The folks making them even let me make special requests such as I like my sandwich really lean while others like lots of bark and fat. Two thumbs up!

What didn’t we like??? Everything was super, brisket was exceptional. Moist and tons of flavor. Collard greens were perfect and you have to try the spoonbread! Wide variety of BBQ sauces, definitely something for everyone. Going back tomorrow for lunch and banana pudding!

Worst BBQ experience I have ever had in Florida. Put my order in at the establishment and arrived to find out that they had forgot about my order apparently. Had to sit and wait for my food only to be disappointed. Didn’t occur to me when I ordered the brisket that it was going to be a sandwich and that the brisket didn’t have any bbq sauce even though I’m ordering food from a BBQ place. The buns on the sandwich look like someone had strapped them to their feet and played a game of grease hockey with them. The only thing halfway decent was the cold macaroni I got to eat when I got home. Sorry for the harsh review, just simple observations.
