I’ve eaten at Black Bear Diners before and usually have a great experience, so I was disappointed with the Fairfield location on this visit. I ordered a Benedict dish and substituted the sausage for chicken sausage, plus hash browns and fruit. Unfortunately, the chicken sausage tasted burnt and was tough to get through, and the hollandaise sauce tasted stale, almost like it had been sitting for a while. The hash browns were cold and so over-crisped on top that the entire layer lifted in one piece instead of breaking apart—hard to enjoy. The fruit ended up being the only part of my plate I could finish.

My friend’s omelet was better, but the biscuit was extremely hard and basically inedible. I also ordered an orange juice and it tasted like a bottled brand (Tropicana-style), definitely not fresh.

On the positive side, we came at the right time and were seated immediately, which is rare for a busy Sunday morning. Service moved quickly, and the staff was friendly, but the food quality just wasn’t there.

Based on my experiences at other Black Bear Diners, I truly believe this issue is specific to this location. Unfortunately, I don’t think I’d return to this one.

4/16/2025: Our waitress was rushing us and trying to kick us out faster? She was a bit aggressive too. I’m not sure why she was acting like that.

The chicken tender cobb salad is to DIE for!
I recommend coming here for the salad!
Service was friendly and accommodating. We’ll definitely be coming back!

Ordered to go. I ordered the cobb salad, but it was a little disappointing. Take out is lower quality and had missing ingredients (like blue cheese and bacon).
I don’t recommend ordering a take out. It was just sad.

I dined in, ordered the same salad. The salad was delicious without a doubt and a lot better than take out, but the amount of it was half the size as my visit on 5/7. The servings are very inconsistent. I’m very confused on what’s going on.

I’ll try again in the future, but a caution to customers — delicious food, but there’s a bit of inconsistencies going on. Will update my review when I go back in.

Dined in. Cobb salad was on point as the first time. My husband and I shared, so this is what it looks like split. My final review is that their salad is good! There was a piece of beard hair in mine… so I recommend their chefs to wear something. I’m not going to be a Karen about it, but it still pretty gross and good at the same time.
Overall, I’d still come back.

I’m very young and I like being honest. A woman with a ton of make up that I thought was beautiful and nice, turned out to be rude. My family ordered a burger (plain clearly) and she came back and it had pickles and tomatoes. It was a mistake, but when we told her that we said plain, she said we didn’t order it like that. So of course we said sorry and the woman next to her said they would remake it. The woman looked pissed and my sister passed her the plates gently and she had the audacity to grab the plate out of her hand and walked away slightly aggressive. If you can’t work without getting angry, don’t work. The old lady was nice but the other woman was not.

I was served by a new server named Jordan today. She was very pleasant and attentive. I had the chicken avocado clip b which was perfect. I love the onion rings too. Just didn’t have room for dessert. Now that I’m home I wish I had taken her suggestion to take a dessert to go. The bear decor is so warm and inviting. I will be back for sure

Our serve Elaina was amazing and very friendly we had an excellent experience with her. We were so pleased with the service and food was delicious. Elaine went out of her to make it a pleasant experience after sharing our negative experience at a different location. If you visit this location definitely ask for Elaina. The manager on staff was really sweet and the team is definitely a great reflection of her.

Black Bear Diner isn’t our first choice of dining establishment, but it was the closest sit-down restaurant that we recognized in the area. Immediately upon entering, the first thing you’ll notice is the attention to detail on the bear and forest theming. That’s undoubtedly Black Bear Diner’s best feature. They’ve got prop trees and bear drawings all over the walls. Even the plates have little claw prints on them. Second to this is probably the service, we had a lot of fun talking to our waitress and she served us well. The menu had almost an overwhelming amount of options, which could be a positive or a negative depending on how you look at it. However, with so many different kinds of dishes to make, they’re bound to be missing something, and they were- the bacon mac-n-cheese I originally wanted to order was out, plus a couple of other things. That was disappointing, but I made do with the choice breakfast.

It took 20 minutes or a little less for all of our plates to get to the table. My plate consisted of maybe 2 eggs, 2 small sausages, and one big waffle. All of that costed me $17. And here is why I can’t grant BBD a 4. It is just so expensive for what it’s worth. When you take away the service and the atmosphere, their dishes taste no better than any other diner, and the dishes are supposed to be the main thing to look forward too. It doesn’t seem proportionate to price almost everything at over $10 when the quality and the quantity doesn’t match.

Overall, want a cozy and friendly sit-down space to dine with a group on rare occasions? You’ll probably like Black Bear. Want to get full with an actual quality eating experience at a reasonable price? You’re better off going elsewhere. 3/5.

Food was not better than IHOP or Denny’s but the portions were large. First time at a black bear diner, definitely overhyped. Service was a little slow. The staff is definitely nice.

One of the best Black Bear Diners that I’ve been to. Really great food here, service was great as well. The restaurant is smaller than other Black Bear Diners but still great.

False advertising, they say that they serve generous portions Having seen other Black bear diners before my volcano looked smaller than most stacks available in the USA. while you wait for your food they have a paper to read about how much pride they take In what they do and that they order large platters to fill them. Do not eat here and definitely fire the cook for serving that as a volcano.
