In 1995 founders Bruce Dean and Bob & Laurie Manley opened the first Black Bear Diner in Mt. Shasta, CA. Their mission was simple: create a fun and friendly atmosphere where the local community could enjoy huge portions of home-style cooking at a reasonable price. Today, we continue their mission at every Black Bear Diner across the country, as we passionately provide guests an outstanding experience. Our menu offers comfort food classics, and our entire menu is offered all day long. Whether you are craving pancakes at 8 pm or pot roast at 8 am – we’ve got something for everyone. Ordered a turkey club sandwich as a to-go order. Disappointed to find it had very little of ANYTHING on it. I come through Madera 3-4 times a year and always pick up dinner here. It’s usually better than this. Salad was good though.

This Black Bear Diner, compared to the one I’ve tried in the Bay Area, is not as ornate. But it still has their signature black bear sculptures and decorations, and the chair backs that have mountain scenery embroidered on them. The food is just OK, and we enjoyed the bear theme atmosphere more than the food.

On our way to a quilt show in Sacramento, and in need of getting out of the rain for a bit, we chose to visit this location again. We were surprised to see that the place was really quiet, and not busy as usual. Perhaps, the weather may have been the reason. Anyways, we were pleasantly greeted and seated by our server Kara. Let me tell you. Kara was very attentive to our needs, and was always on top of her game, as far as service was concerned. Our coffee was always topped off, and she asked if there was anything else that she could get for us. My wife had a side of toast with a side of bacon; my sister had a side of fruit with toast and coffee; and I had a side of their marbled rye toast, some coffee and some of their delicious oatmeal. The cook was also on top of his/her game, as our meals came out very quickly. Nothing better than a good meal, amongst family, while inside a cozy restaurant. We enjoyed our meals and then were on our way to Sacramento. If you’re in the area, give this place a try, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the service which is provided here. By the way, great job Kara.

When we went to the Black Bear Diner it was our first time there. It wasn’t planned our car broke down and we had to stop and stay at a hotel. Jerry was the manager he was awesome it was very busy but he took time to help us. Corey was our server she was awesome also, we were very impressed. She got our order and helped us with anything we needed.They made our day better. We were very happy with the service and the food and will be back. Thank you.

The madera location is very hit or miss. I live super close so there’s times where I order through door dash and pick it up. Some days the food looks super good. Pancakes are thick and fluffy. And then there’s times like this. I paid close to $15 for this plate and it looks like someone left overs. Door dash will give me a partial refund, but the restaurant themselves won’t replace or remake? Not sure if it just depends on the cook and the time you go. But definitely not worth the money.

After I realized what kind of service they were gonna provide, I figured I should have left. Both waiters had rude attitudes. They never bothered checking on their customers. Just doing the bare minimum while making rude faces. Very unprofessional. I was actually happier getting out of there.
