In 1995 founders Bruce Dean and Bob & Laurie Manley opened the first Black Bear Diner in Mt. Shasta, CA. Their mission was simple: create a fun and friendly atmosphere where the local community could enjoy huge portions of home-style cooking at a reasonable price. Mmm… maybe I caught them in a bad time? Maybe it was a race thing? Idk. The 5-6 around us seemed to get their meals on time while we waited over 50 minutes for ours. The food was warm though, until I bit my chicken bacon sandwich and it was raw. Honestly, not a good first impression. I did get that discounted off tho. That makes it all better right?

This review is long overdue. I received a call from another restaurant the morning of my mother‘s surprise 90th birthday party, they called to cancel. With only three hours notice I was in a panic to find another place for 20 people to go. I called blackbear diner and asked if they could handle a party that large on such short notice. They informed me that they usually need a week so they can prepare for that large of a party. I asked to speak to the manager her name was Trina, I explained my situation to her and she said come on in and we will figure it out. I told her we were in no hurry and that fast service was not an issue. I started to cry in relief that Trina did whatever she could for me and my mother. She made my mother‘s birthday some special and I could never repay her for her kindness. Our waitress is wonderful and patience. I can’t say enough about the restaurant and especially Trina. Thanks for all you did.

Well let’s start with our server was super nice and pretty attentive even tho they seemed busy. However I have eaten at several Black bear diners and I was very disappointed with my food this time around, although lets say I generally get breakfast but this time I decided to go for a dinner portion I ordered the homestead meatloaf with “creamy” grits and italina style green beans with bacon. The salad and cornbread muffin came first and were great, then I got my meal. The plate looked terrible like it was thrown together hap hazardly, the grits were extremely dry and the green beans were ofcourse canned but what i though should be bacon seemed to be ham. Now the meatloaf did have good flavor however it was burnt and on the menu it was described as having “homemade crispy onions” on top there were no onions and when asked about said onions was given onions rings. Now Black bear diner has always had large portions and great service, but this time I was very sad about the food being so poorly done at this particular location.

Stopped by for brunch while supercharging our Tesla. The place has a cool vibe, though the service was a bit slow. We ordered grilled cheese sandwiches, pancakes with eggs, an egg white veggie omelette, and a chicken wrap. The food tasted good, just what you’d expect from a classic diner. The grilled cheese was crispy, the pancakes were fluffy, and the omelette was loaded with fresh veggies. The chicken wrap was satisfying, with tender chicken and a nice balance of flavors. Overall, a pleasant spot for a casual meal while waiting for the car to charge.

After driving around on Christmas day morning looking for an open restaurant in Grants Pass for breakfast, we ended up at the Black Bear Restaurant. It was packed with people. We waited about 20 minutes which was not too bad. Our server was Rodney. He was the most courteous and professional and very accommodating given the obvious pressure he was under to service a ton of customers. We give Rodney 5 stars for superior service on Christmas day. The food was great, and prepared very well. Kudos to all the employees for giving their all to the customers on Christmas day! Rodney kept our coffee cups filled and provided us with excellent service. I was very impressed!
